So the moment i bring up some issues pertaining to women, feminism, and how present day thinking is leading women down the wrong path, suddenly im a bad guy? I know what women's day is about. Its about awareness and trying to solve problems.

It's true that special interest groups play the role of the victim and in canada its all about money (whether its raw money or in the form of control).

You are so very wrong by trying to suggest that im some sort of chauvenist just because i dont roll over and play dead the moment someone decides to force feed me their played out PC tripe. True equality is just that, EQUALITY. And from where i am sitting, present day "feminists" want dominance, not equality.

I could bring up a large list of examples but im sure you can already figure them out for yourself.

Im highly offended that just by questioning feminism and women's day that it could be suggested that i am a chauvenist. In fact id argue that most so called "feminists" are much more chauvenistic than the men they complain about.

Women's day should be changed to "humanity day" because issues that affect women also have a counter effect on men and vice versa. And men are part of the solution, not the problem. So instead of throwing out insults at the first person that challenges the status quo, maybe you should listen to a fresh perspective.

Ill add something else to this as well, The One thing I have never done is personally attcaked someone on this board just because i disagree with them. (other than ryan parks hahaha). So if anyone should be offended, it's me. But frankly i dont really care.

i don't believe this is an extreme point of view. it's REALISTIC!

sorry Sarah, to disagree here with you, i understand your anger and share some of your frustrations and sentiments. but you do have to admit that there really are women out there who are 'extremist' in their feminist ways and this is where I disagree.

of course we still have to deal with certain engrained social norms and points of views when it comes to women's rights, however it does not mean we are barred from taking things a step further. it might still be a bit difficult to get to those executive jobs, however the door is open and it is possible and will be more possible as time goes on.

it is also a matter of perspective. we don't need to pat ourselves on the back, but what we do need to do is to focus on what has been achieved and what can be achieved and what we REALLY want. i don't consider myself a victim. i could say i am a victim of the system that fails/ -ed me. but more so on the international level. not here on canadian ground.

i chose to book out of this 'bandwagon & conveyor belt society' and choose to live life according to my own standards, visions, wants and needs, hopes and dreams. that's all. i have nothing to prove to anyone, except to myself. i've had enough of the so called 'dimpolatic' game, especially on the UN/ international level. it is saturated with corruption and they truly are tools and fools trying to keep up with this selfish and warped 'monkey business' called bureaucracy and politics which make noooooooooo sense at all and with the biggest monkey of them all sitting at the wheel and choking on pretzels! THAT is the joke!! this is only a means to an end to divert the attention from what is actually going on. This is the news for the mob and the people who don't know any better and believe everything they see through the manipulated information they get fed on a daily basis. so in this perspective, all the doors i need to be open ARE open to me. thank god for Canada, the rest of the world can go fuk off b/c i am not going to be victim of THAT any longer trying to bend over backward for a career that is for the 'cause of the greater good'. the world will keep spinning the way it wants and you as a little person will get caught up in that hamster wheel. take action for yourself! think outside that 'wheel'.

but, yes, i agree, when it comes to women internationally - it is heart-breaking, saddening, devastating, frustrating and almost discouraging ... but only b/c of these outside forces of the so-called 'political game'. it's 'nice' that the UN is this supposed noble knight in shining armour ... but how far can he go? only as far as his ventures are financed by the people pulling the strings in the background.

From its Headquarters to its furthest field work, UN marks Women's Day

8 March 2006 From its towering Headquarters in New York to the seared fields of Nigeria, from Secretary-General Kofi Annan to case workers fighting rape in Nepal to special goodwill ambassador Nicole Kidman, the United Nations today marked International Women's Day with calls to boost the role of women in decision-making.

The international community is finally beginning to understand a fundamental principle: women are every bit as affected as any man by the challenges facing humanity in the 21st century in economic and social development, as well as in peace and security, Mr. Annan said in a message.

The world is also starting to grasp that there is no policy more effective in promoting development, health and education than the empowerment of women and girls. And I would venture that no policy is more important in preventing conflict, or in achieving reconciliation after a conflict has ended, he added.

He noted that there are now 11 women Heads of State or Government and three countries Chile, Spain and Sweden now have gender parity in Government.

But we have far, far more to do, he warned. The rate of progress overall is slow.

I completely agree that there are a few bad apples that take womens right to the extreme. They do not completely invalidate what international womens day stands for though, which is what Jay was suggesting.

well...reading his posts, it seems like you're picking specific parts out of his posts that you don't like, and only focusing on those instead of looking at the bigger picture.

Posted by LKD on Mar-09-2006 20:20:

womens day is like valentines day. should respect/appreciate everyday instead of just the one day. however since there isnt an appraisal in appreciation/respect on that one day, then why have the day deticated at all?

Posted by MarkT on Mar-09-2006 21:06:

^^^ no, it's not...it's not some commerical faux holiday.

I really don't see why people get so worked up over this...

FFS, it's to raise awareness...it's not "let's play the victim card" day.

It's a FACT that women have been marginalized in certain ways (and continue to be, depending upon the issue in question and/or where they live). This day raises awareness to that FACT and celebrates the progress that has historically been made through to now.

so WTF exactly is the problem?

There will ALWAYS be a smaller group within the whole who are opportunistic or radical in their way of thinking...whether it's a religious group, a minority, whatever. Just because there are a few freaks out there (re: Andrea Dworkin, Catherine McKinnon, etc) it doesn't mean that International Women's Day is some front in order to profit from playing the victim.

I really find it humourous when some people say they support equality...yet have no practical way to implement it. "Let's just immediately, at this moment, magically treat everyone as equal". Yeah, the world doesn't work that way...and so, special interest groups are necessary to advance and draw attention to a cause...particularly when the majority or status quo doesn't give a shit about that cause.

Jay...Your assertion that "present day feminists want dominance, not equality" is a sweeping generalization. So the loud radicals speak for all feminists, do they? The Islamic leaders who seek the "destruction of Isreal" speak for all Muslims? The Christian Right leaders calling for the assassination of foreign heads of state represent all conservative Christians?

come on...you can do better than that!

I *highly* recommend (and I think Jay would enjoy it) the book "The Princess at the Window" by Donna LaFramboise (Canadian journalist) as an example of internal criticism within the feminist movement. Perhaps a wee bit dated (1997), but a great read. She provides a shitload of evidence and numbers to support her points that there's more to the perceived "inequality" than meets the eye.

i didn't read the previous thread but i guess i should have.

women's day is definitely NOT about making money from being a victim.
all i got is a nice wish and an MSN flower.

no one even celebrates this day anymore, really. and i think that shows our society has improved and women's day is not as necessary anymore.

jay's points seem so useless in the scheme of things and he is just trying to stir shit up because there isn't anything else to complain about now that his precious conservatives are in power in canada.

I am never suprised by Jayx1's comments. Only suprised that people continue to get so angry at them.

People will continue to believe what they want.

But just a tidbit of information on women's rights....

-Did you know that in Pakistan a woman can only claim rape if 4 witnesses can step forward?

-Did you know that in the DRC- democratic republic of congo, a woman is not allowed to do anything without the consent of her husband?

-Did you know that in most war torn parts of africa, a woman whether child or adult that has been raped is seen "unfavoured" and therefore rejected from their society?

I can go on and on...

This day is a celebration for many women to exercise their voice, because so many are not living in western standards, and may never live to make their own decisions.

dont really wanna get involved in this bullshit but i had to when i saw yor post. womens day is a day when we (the men) show how much respect do we have for you all. even tho we should do it (some of us DO IT) every day, this is the day when we make you feel super special, cause you deserve it. its been a tradition in my country since i can remember and its always gonna be like that.

all that being said lemme ask you something. how many of you did actually call your mom or your sister to tell them that you love them????

i dont wanna say that i agree 100% with jay but he has some valid points there. here in canada feminists and man hating lesbians have totally wrong idea whats this all about and they're screwing this up for all you nice girls. it is a day to feel extra special but its not that special that you can say "fuck it, we dont need this day no more", cause you do and we (the man) need it too. maybe you wont believe it but some of us guys are actually normal and nice people and we love to make the women in our life feel like queens, especially on this day.

i know what are you saying but did you read the newspaper yesterday???? "im a lesbian and im proud of it", "im a feminist and im proud of it", "we want the same wages as man ". out of a 100 titles there was maybe one or two actually talking about things that you are talking about. so please exercise your voice (by all means) but do it so it actually counts.

all that being said, happy march the 8th ladies, dont be so bitter cause you have it really good here in canada

that is soooo opposite to what i said.

i was trying to say, that first of all, i didn't even know it was women's day until i saw a post here on TA. which means that it's not such a big deal anymore for anyone. i wasn't saying that i was mad that i didn't know about it. i was saying that it's sort of good because it's something that has become not so necessary for me. i
