| Originally posted by Jayx1 Actually i happen to believe in true equality. Women's day is not a time for self congratulatory pats on the back. Its a time to focus on women's issues. And women's issues happen to also affect men! So the moment i bring up some issues pertaining to women, feminism, and how present day thinking is leading women down the wrong path, suddenly im a bad guy? I know what women's day is about. Its about awareness and trying to solve problems. It's true that special interest groups play the role of the victim and in canada its all about money (whether its raw money or in the form of control). You are so very wrong by trying to suggest that im some sort of chauvenist just because i dont roll over and play dead the moment someone decides to force feed me their played out PC tripe. True equality is just that, EQUALITY. And from where i am sitting, present day "feminists" want dominance, not equality. I could bring up a large list of examples but im sure you can already figure them out for yourself. Im highly offended that just by questioning feminism and women's day that it could be suggested that i am a chauvenist. In fact id argue that most so called "feminists" are much more chauvenistic than the men they complain about. Women's day should be changed to "humanity day" because issues that affect women also have a counter effect on men and vice versa. And men are part of the solution, not the problem. So instead of throwing out insults at the first person that challenges the status quo, maybe you should listen to a fresh perspective. Ill add something else to this as well, The One thing I have never done is personally attcaked someone on this board just because i disagree with them. (other than ryan parks hahaha). So if anyone should be offended, it's me. But frankly i dont really care. |
I completely agree that there are a few bad apples that take womens right to the extreme. They do not completely invalidate what international womens day stands for though, which is what Jay was suggesting.
we should have International Men's Day

womens day is like valentines day. should respect/appreciate everyday instead of just the one day. however since there isnt an appraisal in appreciation/respect on that one day, then why have the day deticated at all?
^^^ no, it's not...it's not some commerical faux holiday.
I really don't see why people get so worked up over this...
FFS, it's to raise awareness...it's not "let's play the victim card" day.
It's a FACT that women have been marginalized in certain ways (and continue to be, depending upon the issue in question and/or where they live). This day raises awareness to that FACT and celebrates the progress that has historically been made through to now.
so WTF exactly is the problem?
There will ALWAYS be a smaller group within the whole who are opportunistic or radical in their way of thinking...whether it's a religious group, a minority, whatever. Just because there are a few freaks out there (re: Andrea Dworkin, Catherine McKinnon, etc) it doesn't mean that International Women's Day is some front in order to profit from playing the victim.
I really find it humourous when some people say they support equality...yet have no practical way to implement it. "Let's just immediately, at this moment, magically treat everyone as equal". Yeah, the world doesn't work that way...and so, special interest groups are necessary to advance and draw attention to a cause...particularly when the majority or status quo doesn't give a shit about that cause.
Jay...Your assertion that "present day feminists want dominance, not equality" is a sweeping generalization. So the loud radicals speak for all feminists, do they? The Islamic leaders who seek the "destruction of Isreal" speak for all Muslims? The Christian Right leaders calling for the assassination of foreign heads of state represent all conservative Christians?
come on...you can do better than that!
I *highly* recommend (and I think Jay would enjoy it) the book "The Princess at the Window" by Donna LaFramboise (Canadian journalist) as an example of internal criticism within the feminist movement. Perhaps a wee bit dated (1997), but a great read. She provides a shitload of evidence and numbers to support her points that there's more to the perceived "inequality" than meets the eye.

I am never suprised by Jayx1's comments. Only suprised that people continue to get so angry at them.
People will continue to believe what they want.
But just a tidbit of information on women's rights....
-Did you know that in Pakistan a woman can only claim rape if 4 witnesses can step forward?
-Did you know that in the DRC- democratic republic of congo, a woman is not allowed to do anything without the consent of her husband?
-Did you know that in most war torn parts of africa, a woman whether child or adult that has been raped is seen "unfavoured" and therefore rejected from their society?
I can go on and on...
This day is a celebration for many women to exercise their voice, because so many are not living in western standards, and may never live to make their own decisions.
