Damn, I thought people were smart enough to know they shouldn't request songs. How wrong was I

Like stated before: just don't!

Posted by Mike_Foyle on Mar-15-2006 17:26:

i suggest not requesting tracks from any dj. they know how to do their job, they dont need someone else to tell them what to play. i hate it when people request tracks when im djing.

indeed. IMO requesting songs is in a club/event one of the dumbest ideas ever. and i can't believe all this fanoby/girl thing going on here on TA. WTF people, this isn't supposed to be some retarted pop music. you're doing everything wrong FFS!

i agree... it's pretty disrespectful, i mean you're basically telling a DJ how to do his job. i mean it's one thing if you're suggesting a track that the DJ will most likely play regardless of whether you suggest it or not, but if you're just requesting random songs that you want to hear, then that's kind of foolish.

Flash some boob, wink, and pass a note.
If you can reach the DJ booth.

I made a post on TA not too long ago in a JZ thread kind of jokingly asking him to play his remix of Ficta - Eli in his upcoming set, which he hasn't played in forever, and mofo encored with it. It was sweet

I got a little carried away the second time I saw Armin, and I was in VIP and I requested Time To Say Goobye by Envio. He didn't play it, but after that I felt stupid, because I knew you really shouldn't request tunes from pro DJs, it wasn't like a school dance hehe. I was just out of my mind that night...it wasn't the first time I had been to an event, I was just IN LOVE with that tune and the whole vibe of the night...

i think 99/100 times --- it is absolutely foolish to request a track from any serious DJ that takes their job seriously. definitely disrespectful and unnecessary.

i think very rarely, it might be okay to ask for a track. but my thinking in this is along the lines of paul van dyk in nyc... in a place like new york where he has played 6 hour sets for so many years, certain "pvd in nyc classics" have emerged. i think in a context like this, it would be just fine to remind paul about those classics and just how much we appreciate them.... is see something like that as more personal and a cumulative thank you that indicates your personal enjoyment of so many great events as opposed to a foolish dj request outside of the dj's playlist. i guess what i mean is if you pick the right track, like a song that has a special meaning to the dj in the context in which you are seeing the dj, than maybe it's possible. or maybe i just mean it for pvd because i've seen him so many times.

i'd never ask sasha for xpander like mentioned above... and he's my other favorite dj. no way!!!! i'd never ask him for anything for that matter! asking for xpander, when sasha's playlists and sounds for years have been very different and evolved is just ignorant and really probably insulting that you are there to see a dj when you have no appreciation for what his sounds and productions of the present, and all you can name is what track landed on all the greatest hits type of mix compilations........ one of the (Very Good) but most commercial works from someone who makes a huge effort to play mostly underground music!

I requested For an Angel once, but the bastard didn't play it. But when I look back, I probably should've waited for a Paul van Dyk show and not a Zabiela show.

imo as long as your request fits what he/she is playing atm, then simply asking the dj or slipping him/her a note isn't a bad thing. Doesn't work if you're seein' somebody as big as Tijs or Ferry though.

funny story... my friend thought it would be a good idea to ask paul oakenfold to play a certain song when he came to a club near us. lol... if anyone knows oaky's personality, they will understand the humor in that...

I recommend emailing them before hand. They usually have their sets figured out.

Umm, for the most part, no. Most DJs will go and dig through their record box and will play a track that will fit the moment for that particular evening. Only Oakey is guilty of this.

You do not bother the DJ when he's mixing. Perioid.

Unless the DJ is your friend, then listen to Nik.

well what i'm sayin' is that it's freakin' hard in some clubs to get close to them because they're either in a crow's nest booth or in front of a sea of people.

hahaha my friend text message his request to Denny Tsettos at the Tempts Closing party. He did in fact played the request wich was Lizard by Picotto.
