No way; I doubt they're going with something thats not fully custom. You were spot-on with everything else though; it's just dissappointing cause I always wanted to hear what all the fuss was about Shorty's soundsystems.

david morales & sonic

I agree with 5hiftn6ears, if David Morales is still involved, then if it's not "the beast", it has to be something as good or better... David Morales improved STEREO when he took over the club a few years ago and had shorty install a new system there, Sound is the most important thing for him...and he has always said...there is no limit to how much he will spend to have the best sound...

now the question is...can anyone confirm if David Morales is still involved with SONIC?

I was and still am more excited about this club than anyone, but recent news of the lounge closing, and no more SSB come as dissapointments to me.

I can only see two scenarios regarding the sound:

1. Shorty left because Sonic and Stereo have better sound systems up their sleaves. (good)

2. Shorty left because there was a disagreement with management (for whatever reason) and now Sonic/Stereo will have to improvise. (bad)

To answer your question Bryan, yes David is just as involved as he was from the get go. Until an official announcement is made, I am VERY limited as to what i can say as a promoter/host for Sonic.

What I can tell TA, and anyone else who has read the 'rumour control' posted by Shorty, is you have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to worry about when it comes to the sound for Sonic OR Stereo. Do you really think that a guy like Morales, who has been surrounded by the amazing soundsystem at Stereo, would settle for ANYTHING less than a mind blowing sound experience @ Sonic ? I think not.

A full press release and details will be available shortly regarding Sonic's official launch on Saturday April 29th. For the time being in response to some of your questions regarding Shorty's resignation, we assure you that we will be opening on Saturday April 29th as scheduled.

The owners and management of Sonic remain 110% committed to providing this city with the world's best sound. Although Shorty is at the top of his game, there are others with just as much, if not more talent when it comes to sound engineering. The decision to change some of the components included in Shorty's custom built rig were made solely to ensure that we deliver a better sounding club to Torontians than anywhere else on the planet.

We look forward to seeing you all on April 29th and are excited to hear your feedback on our club!

The Sonic Team

rumour control shorty resigns from stereo & sonic
The clubs owners have decided to go in a different sound philosophy direction one that i can not align with. Given the owners decisions, i had no choice but to resign.

I will continue to promote my sound philosophy & i have other international projects under way.

In regards to the sound system in stereo, i removed all my loaned custom designed and custom modified equipment & replaced it with new standard equipment so the club can still function.

Any other statements that are brought forward about this matter are truely false. Shorty

David Morales on mtlnights:

Let me put all this to rest everyone........

Because shorty quit it is not the end of the world for stereo. I don't have to be a sound engineer to know good sound. A good producer doesn't necessarily have to be an accomplished musician. That being said i will always be committed to having the best sound in my clubs. What many people don't know is that stereo sounds good but not upto my expectations. It can sound even better and shorty could not give me that. There are problems with the sound that people don't know. I've asked shorty to address these issues but he was incapable of dealing with the problem. The room has bass cancellation and the time alignment is off. Try standing in the middle of the room... You hear major bass, now step away from the middle and you will hear how drastically the sound changes. The bass is not supposed to change. Everyone was worried about what was going to happen to stereo when angel left. Once i took over i know what i wanted and was commited to it with an open wallet. That's how we got to where we are. No one knew who shorty was and i took a chance because i believed that he was good for the job and a good job he did. But there are other capable if not more capable and knowledgable sound engineers than shorty.

Now let me tell you how nasty and vindictive mr.shorty is everyone the side that you don't know.

This all happened because shorty is very insecure and feels that he knows everything thing that there is to know about sound and no one can tell him anything. I went to play at a club in greece and i heard something that was unreal. In this club they had a setup that i've been wanting in a hifi sense. I've been wanting digital to analogue converters for the cdj's which make the cdj sound like a turntable. I've asked shorty to look into this and well what can i say we still don't have it but i am in the process of getting it. Anyway i suggested to shorty that he come to greece to hear this soundsystem and to take some pointers from someone that's great at what he does. We never stop learning. You can't always be stuck in the past. You have to know what is out there because let me tell you and i'm an analogue freak that i heard something that had some digital components that was mind boggling. It made me feel that stereo still has ways to go before i can be proud and say my sound is the best. Who's to say that analogue and digital can't work together? When i spoke to shorty about this club he was very negative and unethusiastic. All i ever wanted was for shorty to be better than what he is. Information is vital to our existence. I told him that i did not appreciate is negativeness. All shorty does is ridicule other peoples work and that's not nice. We at stereo decided that what we were paying him for to come up once a month didn't make sense economically. He took it as an insult. This past weekend the club sounded like shit in my opinion but i didn't say anything. I told shorty at one point that we needed to have a serious conversation, he says" about what" i said " how about your future as a soundman "

He never once told me that he was quitting and pulling out equipment that in reality belonged to the club. Why would i borrow equipment when i have the money to buy it???? Why would i put myself in that position. I didn't pay for that gear because i forgot about it and he never brought it up. It was purely an oversight. Shorty waits til we all leave the club knowing what his intentions were and with no warning whatsoever takes out the gear and replaces it with god knows what because i would never have agreed to whatever he's put in because all i want is the best and he did not replace the gear with gear of equal quality, that sounds like sabotage to me. He's a very evil and bitter man to do something like this, it is very unprofessional! Remember he did this without saying anything. In reality the gear is mine, how convenient to say that it's not just because it's not paid for. He should have told me that he was going to resign and that there was some gear that is unpaid for. No club "borrows" gear especially mine. At sonic we were buying gear from him as well, now he's saying the gear is not for sale. How childish is that? Be a man or should i say a professional and fulfill your committement and then move on. Again he's trying to sabotage me. I do not want someone with that kind of negative energy involved in what i'm doing. He spends more time on the message boards than he does donig research. I showed him a piece of equipment that i purchased and he's giving an opinion without even checking the gear out, talk about ignorance?!

All in all i now have to cancel my vacation to deal with this issue that will only inconvenience me for a moment. I have to come up to mpntreal to see the garbage that he put into my soundsystem without my approval. Standard equipment he says? My shit is not about standard. Not when i'm willing to pay for the best. In the middle of speaker deliveries he's playing games and lying what kind of a person is that??? How disappointing.

I can only say that i am committed to having the best sound at both stereo and sonic 1000% no one man has the power to stop me from accomplishing that. Because of what shorty has done it will take me a minute to replace the gear that was so evily taken out. So please be patient as we go to the next level in sound. Shorty could have handled this in a more mature and professional matter. It's nothing that we couldn't talk about especially with the relationship that weve had over the years. Remember who and what club put him on the map.

I will say that i've appreciated everything that shorty has done for me, he does work hard i'll give him that. It's time to move on. He's just not for me anymore especially after what he's done. I hope i never see him again because god knows what i'll do.

Thank you all for all your support.

Boa-Redux had a similar problem, but with the high's. There was definately a bit of a delay between the high's and the low's; as if there was an echo in the club. it wasn't really noticeable though and not something that bothered me when i was there.

ok, so shorty quits. Not the end of the world, because there are other capable sound engineers.

My concern is this:
If shorty is pulling his sound gear, then how does sonic expect to open apr 29? Considering the man has been working on the installation of that system for how long, and now all kinds of pieces have been pulled from it?

That isn't the question anybody is asking.

The question people are asking is --- will the system on April 29 be "the" system or some rented rig like NYE?
