Im sure it could be traced further, but to me, this was the straw that broke the camels back, so I blame tiesto.

GDJB was the first show to air As the Rush Comes... As well as most of MCPROG/Lemea & Moor stuff

not too many people were really complaining much about the gabriel and dresden 2003 stuff though, because at first it was a refreshing sound.

So why blame it on G & D's 2003 stuff, and not the stuff that coppied that style?

Its like saying wow your track is good & original but there are 10,000 tracks that sound like it so now it sucks.

Sarah Mclachlan - Silence (DJ Tiesto's In Search Of Sunshine Mix)

i don't think it was until this tune for the following reasons:

1. this tune was massively successful. i mean it basically made tiesto's career. sure he had other big hits that year like his remix of flesh, but let's not kid ourselves...it was this tune that got people that weren't fans (even people that weren't familiar with EDM) interested in him and trance.

2. the timing when this track came along was about the same time a little program called reason started to become popular for kids to play with at home. what it did was set this huge supersaw mentality into their minds and of course they try to mimic it.

3. not only were amateurs trying to recapture the success of tiesto's remix of silence, but so was just about everyone else in the industry. i don't think it was until after that song that you started to see this trend of huge epic vocal trancers...with overdone break downs and huge supersaw synths. (true tunes like rank 1 - airwave also did a similar thing, but i think this tune really pushed trance over the edge).

4. as mentioned above, with the success of tiesto's remix...we got a lot of people newly interested in trance that didn't know much outside of the newly forming trends. because of that lots of people feel a certain nostalgia for that sound and helped to continue commercial success of those types of tunes.

This song is overrated. If you have done so already you should check out:
Sarah McLachlan - Sweet Surrender (tiesto remix)
Now that's a tune!

In music it seems, that it doesn't really matter who was the first to do something, but rather, who was the biggest to do something(or who did something the "best" depending on your POV). There is a critical mass, for example, nobody hails musique concrete musicians for pioneering electronic music, that honor goes to kraftwerk and people from that era, because they were the biggest, but certainly not the first. We seem to think that people started utilizing computers around the 80's with the advent of personal computers, despite there being a whole catalog of computer music like "Daisy Daisy" or "The Illiac Suite" that never gets any appreciation despite being the first, because it was not the biggest. Following that same logic, I would say the critical mass for exposure to "As the Rush Comes" was through the gabriel and Dresden's 2003 essential mix despite first airing on GDJB, and that the first critical mass exposure to early "McProg" was through Tiesto in Concert, which is why I blame tiesto.

This is the track that immediately came to mind for me.

No one is in any denial that trance is in sickly state right now, with lines between trance, prog, house becoming increasingly blurred by many producers. However, this was not always the case. There was a time, once upon ago, that all was good in the hood & trance truly shook our world. My question to you, my good people, is: what song in your opinion, signalled the beginning of the end for trance. Many purists may argue that is started just before the 'Crasher era of '99, but of course, it is subject to opinion. I'd have to say "Castles In The Sky", I think it was a precursor to DJ Sammy, Angel City & their ilk. What do you, my esteemed tranceaddicts think?

Personally I don't give a shit what the press says nor what the rest of you think. I'll listen to whatever fucking genre I wish and that's that. In other words, no one really gives a shit.

Every year some dildo says trance is going to crap...in my opinion it gets better every year. If you listen to tracks from 99 compared to 05 or 06...the quality and technique of producing the music is ten times better. There will always be cheese! If the problem is to much cheese...then every genre of EDM is rotting!!

Posted by torontotrance on Mar-28-2006 20:39:

Honestly, the only person that still has my 100% respect in music is fucking mad mike banks. He honestly does'nt give a shit about press or advertising, he just puts out music he believes in and lets it take care of itself.

Nobody is denying that the production is better. But that's just the shallow gloss to the actual musical merit. Like special effects in movies or graphics in games- they get better every year, but the end result is no more fun.

I agree. MOS just completely flooded the market with top "Ibiza anthems" and "Club anthems for the 21st of March" shit with 40 tracks of pure fluff weve heard 1000 times before. But to pin it down to a single track that really signaled that good trance was gone, Id have to agree with ATRC.

yup, perfection is boring...and making music productioin easy spoils the whole art... its kinda like, with the appearance of photocameras a new artform came alive and painting kinda went downhill...

Posted by torontotrance on Mar-29-2006 02:41:

honestly I don't give a shit who started it or why or how...I just stay away from shittttttt.

I'm going along with Silence. I knew people that didn't know a lick about trance that suddenly "loved techno" after that not knowing the difference.

It was lame too cause I'd ask people what Djs they liked and everyone said Tiestor and then couldn't come up with any other names. Funny how some things stay the same, eh?
