actually, drinking is a huge part of japanese culture. it wasnt uncommon for some of my teachers to be at the club/pub having a drink with us (this was highschool and we were all obviously underaged). they have a drinking age of 20 but its unenforced. I once paid my little sister (13 at the time or around there) to go fetch me a bottle of jose cuervo from the nearby liquor store. no problems, and i got my tequila.

Anyways, clubbing in Japan isn't that great. Most of the clubs my classmates went to played rock/hip hop/top 50/that stuff and they were always SUPER packed. EDM clubs are surprisingly few and far between unless there has been much change in the past 3 years. There is Code Club Complex (or some combination of those 3 words) in kabukicho (part of shinjuku, center of tokyo) that plays EDM that you might wanna check out though I never went there because it was the ONLY club I knew of that carded at the time and it was 20+. I heard it's pretty cool but it closes at 12 or 2 or something.

About foreigners, I'm half japanese, didn't grow up there but lived there a few years during high school and was very much a foreigner just because i don't look full japanese. You really don't have to know the language (i did) to get around in tokyo. You can get away with alot being a foreigner. One (very white, very foreign) guy i knew once went to McDonalds, went behind the counter and started trying to make fries and the people working there were freaking out amongst each other but nobody wanted to go up and comfront him and it went on for a few minutes.

Anyways, Tokyo is alot of fun but I don't know how hard it would be to support yourself as a foreign DJ (cost of living in tokyo is VERY high), but if all else fails you can make at least 30 bucks an hour teaching english. And by teaching English I don't mean busting out a bunch of workbooks and shit, alot of people will pretty much pay you to be their friend and do stuff with them while talking english.

I'm going to live in Japan in August for a year at least, teaching English. Going to be in the countryside in the north-east, but it shouldn't be too hard to get to Tokyo and around Japan.

What is Ageha like? PvD is playing there at the beginning of June, but obviously I'll miss it. I just would like to know about the trance scene in general out there, and about some clubs. If anyone can recommend any clubs / festivals, that'd be appreciated. Thanks

my friend is a semi-well known prog house/trance dj in japan. so yes they do spin house/trance in the clubs there for whoever said they didnt lol

Dunno how realistic this movie scene is but if you have the "Babel" dvd there is a Tokyo club scene in there where the DJ (Shinichi Osawa) does a nifty looped intro and then Earth Wind & Fire - Dancing in September and then a transition to Fatboy Slim - the Joker (ATFC Mix). So a rock track and then funky house.

Good movie btw.

I have heard from a Japanese-Canadian friend who works there in another big city that you can get by with mostly English language and not much Japanese.

I'm half too, never lived in Japan though. My mom tells me that I could easily make it as a DJ with a little bit of Japanese.

lol That story is too good. Japanese people are generally extremely polite. They practically don't have any emotion at all.

When I was there, there was nothing but hip-hop and breakbeats in their record stores.

The guy I was staying with had no idea who Yoji was.

Never been there (maybe one day - the place looks amazing) but there may be a trance scene there. Most famous Japanese trancer I can think of is probably Hiroyuki Oda. I found this website of SevenSenses Recordings & really like the sound of The Originators (a few very short samples on the site). Unfortunately right now it seems there is a very limited selection of SevenSenses releases available to buy online

I think DJ Matsunaga has an online show which I keep meaning to catch. Can anyone please shed any light on The Originators, Matsunaga or SevenSenses?

Brevity. I've been there, and the Japanese drink plenty of beer and they love to club, too. Womb, Spacelab Yellow, Ageha are all popular EDM clubs around Tokyo.

Japan seems to be a very hip place to at least visit (must check out: Anime, hardcore gamers, and JPOP). I've heard that living there is very expensive, with apartments around Tokyo reaching 500,000yen per month (that's $5000 ).

Getting paid as a local DJ is hard anywhere you go, not just in Japan. As said before, it may be harder to get integrated into the scene there. You may have better luck securing a reputation if you are willing to travel for gigs (out of the country) during the weekend...

You MUST check out the arcades there. No exceptions.

While we're on the topic of Japan, anyone have some good recommendations on good EDM remixes of JPop artists? I'm also trying to find a full-length copy of Ayumi Hamasaki's "Real Me (Ram Rider Mix)".
