Looks like it's a done deal.

smilies are great and can def add to a message, but sometimes should be used with caution esp this bad ass ---->

Yes they do.

in my case, as someone mentioned already, my sarcasm doesn't translate well into the written word, especially if you don't know me. soooo...smilies help me out when i'm actually not trying to be sarcastic/mean/snobby.

Posted by ChemEnhanced on Apr-24-2006 19:56:

I use smiles too much sometimes but it does help get your point across. Sometimes a joke isn't taken as a joke because there is nothing that indicates you are joking. On a site like this where many of us have met each other it makes it even more important to show the person you are joking because it could cause even more drama then we already have here.

I tend to be very sarcastic, and it doesnt translate properly over text.

A smilie can totally help the reader know what I really mean.

i agree.

but you dont want to over do them as well. then you just look like a wad.

People in Canada need to smile in everyday life more often.

Everytime i come home from just about anywhere overseas its always the first thing i notice about being home. It's so glaringly obvious how miserable people are after having travelled to places where smiling, not bitching is how you get what you want.

I believe the smile is by far the greatest.
I also enjoy the winking one on MSN, but don't see it on here.

Posted by nusty on Apr-24-2006 23:45:

you're all assh0les.

you're all fantastic.

Posted by The Wiz on Apr-25-2006 00:03:

I like a few smilies here and there. I often find that I cant decide which one best suits what im trying to get across, and thus I have smiley anxiety!

PS. Margs girl, you dont need em! You're a straight shooter and adding them for extra pizzaz just wouldnt seem right.

Posted by Surreal JRS on Apr-25-2006 01:00:

Emoticons are certainly useful to better convey you message, but sometimes they are waaay over used.

Posted by Vogon on Apr-25-2006 01:27:

are important as I am more visual, and they point to parts of a post that might stand out

Posted by Frenchie on Apr-25-2006 01:31:

They can be overused by some people. But with other such as myself, they are under used ( yes there is such a thing). But I tend to type my message and forget about the little guys to the side.

Do they make a difference to you?

My view is, if you don't know what a person means, don't assume anything. You cannot read into things on the net, smilies or no smilies. A lot of the times, comments are directed only at certain people, who know what the meaning is.

I've been fooled by a "" emoticon into thinking that the person was going along w/ a joke... when in fact they used the "" because they were getting annoyed and were trying to hint that the topic should be dropped before they got upset/mad.

Somehow I read that damn "" wrong... I still dont see how it was supposed to connote what that person thought it connoted (to them).

actually, sometimes, the smilies piss me off even more because they are sarcastic themselves.
