I might be getting them from US, so I might as well order a half-dozen if there are more of you interested...

(they are being sold in the city too for abour $20-25/pair + tax, but their distributors, one of which is Long & McQuade, are out of stock on them)

i tried earplugs for the first time at Freedom and hated them. They're the foam ones. Everything is muffled and weird. I need the music to be clear and loudish.

Except when I was at this is london for Laurent garnier, for the first time, I felt PAIN in my ear from the sound. Not ringing, not discomfort, PAIN...and since then I have had pain in my ear on and off, completely initiated by noise. last weekend just being in a restaurant caused discomfort.

I have already gone to a walk in, and it's not an infection, which makes me fear...permanent damage.

It's my monitoring ear, too.

i had that happen to me BOTH time i went to the gallery.

probably the same noise levels of standing next to a jet engine.

I have been diagnosed with severe tinnutis.

I have 24 /7 ringing in my left ear which makes silence unbearable.
The doctor said this is uncurable so this something I am stuck with so I must deal FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.

My loud noise rap sheet is: Being in a band for almost 7 years, going to see my brothers drag race, going to huge festivals and rock/metal concerts, and finally clubbing since my teens.

I have never used earplugs and now I am paying the consquence...I get pain all the time and sometimes its unbearable, so without being preachy....I urge everyone to get good comfortable plugs.

The reason why I have never spoke out is that I have been the biggest hypocrite about this subject...I agree totally what Jeff said about plugs are like condoms, and I'm still wrestling with the adjustment going to plugs. So if anyone sees me without earplugs...give me a smack in the head, I allow you too.

Wear your plugs ppl, you will want to eventually hear your kids first words.

and in addition to that, getting a specialist to look at it is causing huge conflicts with my boss and my 9-5 job...

Moral of the story: be careful

I hate those foam earplugs too, but now I think I'll be investing in a top notch pair of custom made ones.

I rarely leave my house without them when going to a club. At some clubs, I find it actually makes the music sound better - as all the distortion/echos/etc gets filtered out and leaves with a better sound.

At other clubs it can take a bit away -- ie: Sonic, putting in the earplugs did take away a bit of the music with it. However, partway through C&C I lost my earplugs, while it didnt bother me at the time - when I left the club my ears were noticably ringing for a day or two after and I dont like that.

I'm willing to sacrafice some music quaility so I'm not saying "what?" every other second when I'm 40.

bought a pair of anjunabeat ear plugs work a charm

the foam ones do suck.

spend the cash (at least $20) and get the ER-20s

your ears will thank you.

no ringing after US10 and tiesto = good.

When music gets so loud to cause pain - it doesnt sound good. I find it gets all distorted and crappy sounding, and putting in earplugs actually helps it sound better.

There has been a few times I've left clubs because I didnt have earplugs and the music was so loud it was hurting me - Funhaus is horrible for this.

I remeber going for a Just1Fixx party there a year or two ago. Even standing at the back of the club, furthest away from the speakers that I could be - it was so loud that it was causing me pain. So, I left.

Even at places like Stereo, Old Boa, and now Sonic - I find I pretty much need earplugs. I dont like the feeling of my ears being destroyed.

Sorry to hear that. The ER-20s are great for the price, but if you are going to be DJing, i think the customs would be better for you.
I found if you just pull out the ER20s a bit, you get more of the high end frequencies but you also increase the risk of damadge because it lets in more sound. I use that trick to vary the level at different points in the night.

Protect those things that cannot grow back!

Having little periods of higher volume isnt too bad. I still just use the foam ones -- but think I may pick up some of those ER20s - where can you get them in Toronto?

But I'll tend to pop the earplugs in and out a few times over the course of the night - some times you just need to hear the full sound on some parts of some tracks

I'm not AS concerned about DJing actually, because I rarely spin in super loud places for more than an hour or two, and I can also control the monitor volume. it's the extended time on the dancefloor - like the night of Laurent Garnier - that I need to look after first.

I could use the foam ones, but maybe I'll check out these ones you suggest if they're in between the foam ones and the custom ones.

Pretty much the same with me. After my first couple of experiences in clubs, and having ringing ears the bext day, I bought a pair of plugs that lower the sound volume and block out the higher frequencies that cause tinnitus. Music still sounds good, better even since there's no distortion effect (or whatever that makes the music sound bad). I hate having my ears ring, I feel sorry for anyone with permanent tinnitus.

I might pick up some of these ER20s that everyone is talking about, maybe they're better than mine.

Can someone recomend some plugs that can be use while mixing in clubs

can this thread be a sticky?


I need earplugs badly.
