is this really in the constitution?

"...will make no law establishing a particular religion..."

Yes, it's enshrined in the Constitution.

it amazes me how some people are soooo f*cking obtuse

First Amendment:

quote:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.

In other words, the US Congress - and, by extention, any lower level of government - does not have the authority to legally sanction the promotion of any specific religious doctrine. Given that the governmental distribution of public funds is an article of law, the governmental distribution of public funds to public schools that promote Christianity is essentially akin to the government directly funding the promotion of Christianity and - given that the government cannot legally give precedence to any religious doctrine ahead of any other - it must therefore be considered unconstitutional.

I'm not an expert on US constitutional law (suprisingly), but I think that's the gist of it.

well that's also how lawmakers and if the case goes that far, supreme court, will interpret it.

Well the Supreme Court - regardless of its ideological persuasion at the time - has traditionally been very strict on this interpretation (i.e. its stance on school prayer, the display of the ten commandments etc.), so I'd imagine you're right.
