i disagree, and most veteran dj will disagree as well. I personally favor having 1 track on a cd for these reasons:

1. If a cd is scratched, you lose 1 track. Not 10 of them

3. Club lighting is very dark, so its really hard to read those small print tracklistings. I personally write the track name with a Sharpie marker.

I do one per CD for the sheer fact that I get lost if I start jamming all these tunes onto a CD. I tried it once and find it much easier to flip through my CD book and look at the track names in large print rather than trying to find a tune on a paper I made and then finding the appropriate CD. To each his own though...

Two reasons why I disagree...

- This is why I burn two copies of multiple-track discs.
- If a disc is scratched, the only spot it wont play is the scratched spot. For example, if you have ten songs on one disc and the scratch is in the middle of the disc then it will probably only skip on track five. Such is the case with two of my discs, there's a scratch on them, but every track plays except the one in the scratched region.

Another reason why I dislike burning one per CD is that it's a waste of money. I have at least 200 tunes sitting in my binder on only 71 discs, and my binder is just under half-full. If I were to burn just one per CD, then I would need 200 CDs and another binder or two.

well in that case, you sound more like a mobile DJ and should really look into Serato or Final Scratch so you can carry your whole library of tunes everywhere you go.

Actually, I'm not.

i also do 1 track per cd. i think its a lot easier flipping through pages of sleeves looking at the track written on the cd instead of reading a sheet of paper. sometimes i'll have more than 1 track, but thats only if its the same song with 2 or 3 different remixes. also i don't have anything else written on the cd besides the track ie bpm, the tone, etc etc. the way i see it ive heard all the traacks i have burned and generally know what its about. also if i pop it in and i dont think it will flow ill toss on another track. makes my life a hell of a lot simpler

A booklet that holds 500 disks can hold say 6 tracks per disk so 6X500 = 3000
You can bring your whole collection in two of them.

Plus you will not spend 1500-3000$ on blanks.
You can cut down your costs and spend the money on more music.

I don't understand why someone would even need their whole collection. I bring my whole collection with me because I have SSL, but when I used CDs I would just pack what I wanted to play, and some extra just in case.

your average gig is anywhere from 1-3 hours long. Why would you need to bring 500+ tracks?

I spin house music so i'm using house music in this example but, maybe you expect to play for a crowd that likes more of the dark twisted type stuff so you pack your binder with that, but when you get there the crowd is more commercial/funky and don't like the twisted stuff you packed. Bringing all your music allows you to be more flexible.

True but you don't need to bring 3000 tracks with you everytime.

10 till 12 tracks on a cd and i only write the most used tracks on the cd

Oddly enough I'm going to use CDs tonight. I'm going to steal some of the methods on here for burning.

i burn one track to a CD unless i have remixes of that same track...

each track should deserve enough respect to be on its own CD

and it does feel more like vinyl....and CDRs are so cheap, so why not?

as far as arranging my CDs, i haven't fallen into a groove w/that yet....now i have them loosely organized by when i downloaded them...

got cdj 200s there recently and was just looking for some advice on how to burn my cds.

How do other people do it? I dont mean amount of tracks on the cd.


Do you do it by artist, genere, label? IF by artist what do you do with remixes?

for example, sasha and emerson - scorchio(sander klienenburg mix), would this go in with sasha tracks or sander ones?


Not too sure which way i should do it. So any advice on what other people found easist would be great.

So this must be why i see some big name dj's (armin, ferry , tiesto) and other with one or two of those big ass cd cases. i bet they only have one song per cd also with everything on it like title, remix bpm and key. like one said there is not any reason to carry 3000 songs around.

I burn as a vinyl, if I have remixes of that song I put them on the same, no song goes under 192kb/s and 44100Hz, then I write a label either on the CD's or in my cd-wallet.

interesting discussion...i have lots of cds with a buncha songs on them just for messing around...but i like the one song, one CD method that was mentioned here...anyone know places (online or otherwise) with good prices for cd-rs?

When I buy my tracks I usually get 2-3 from the same artist... which in turn I will burn those tracks from that artist to CD..

So, as an example from my last purchase..

^^ One CD.. AXL was added because it is the only track I have and its an A.

I always burn my songs one song per CD (unless I have both mixes or two rediculously similar tracks) and I always bring my entire collection (2 CD cases).

I get most of my tracks from Play It Tonight.

Just checked it out last night... very nice, much much MUCH more filtered down for quality than Beatport. I can click for hours on Beatport and find maybe 1 or 2 tracks. Amazing how much music gets signed by labels.

I also like Magneticgrooves, Resonant Vibes.

As for how I burn my music, I download new music and place it in a tracklist based on date (7-19-2006 Disc 1). If I get more tracks then fit on a disc, I'll create a second playlist "Disc 2".

I burn two copies of the playlists and label the CD's using an Epson printer to print the tracklist directly on the CD's.

It might actually make more sense in the long run to burn 1 track per cd (and maybe the remixes). Why? Because at some point you'll want to take tracks out of your "rotation", or keep favorites in the "rotation". Hard to do that when there are 5-6 tracks on the CD that you no longer want to play.

One track per CD (or a couple if I've got a few different versions of that track), makes it SO much quicker to find things if you've got the name of the tune in massive letters on the CD...

All sorted oldest -> newest, i.e. when I get a new tune I just add it on the end.

Simple
