there was a period in his career, from the late 70s to the late 80s where i really didn't like any of that music. [hence the series of 4s and 5s].

but my favorites from him are his early work [TB/Platinum] and his most recent work [from TB2 onward].

In 2003, he made "Tubular Bells 2003" which is an updated version of the original Tubular Bells back in 1973. with newer sound quality, better soudning instruments. basically getting rid of all the problems and poor quality in the original. not that the original was bad [it was amazing, really], but after hearing this newer version, it's hard to listen to the old one.

I remember reading about this, and he said that he only had a week to record the whole album, that's why some of the guitars sound out of tune in some parts and why the playing isn't as good. 2003 is much better, but I prefer Bells II.

TBIII is my favorite. i haven't heard a better ending to an album....EVAR!

that was really what kind of started me on EDM too, ironically enough.

Tubular Bells was an amazing achievement. Because he had about 8 tape tracks, he had to over-dub a lot of the instruments: record over the other tracks so it all fit into place. He couldn't make a mistake because he was recording over the music he'd already played.

I agree, it's a masterpiece, but you can hear how limited he was at the time. I love his productions, he's one of my fav. producers.

In Sides 6/10?!?!!?I believe that In Sides is the absolute orbital masterpiece, what can i say about that album...it's symphomic ambient/electronica at it's best, nothing else from orbital really beats it...and middle of nowhere and blue album...9/10?!?!?Oh come on mate, especially "middle of nowhere" is rrreeallly bad (i would give it a fair 3!)blue album is okish(5/10).Snivilisation is the third best orbital moment (after orbital-2-"the brown album")in my opinion, with lots of experimentation and stuff.It has some very beautiful moments like the opening ambience of "forever", the epic "Are we here", the piano-led "kein trink wasser" the symphonic ambience of "attached" and others (which i can't remember right now.)Actually these three orbital albums "brown album", "snivilisation" and "in-sides" demonstrate the artistic peak of orbital's musical career i think,Ofcourse it's just my opinion (and that of the press!lol)but anyway...musical taste is subjective.
Anyway... I would really like to do that for Vangelis'albums, but, because they are 30+ albums and it will take some time(!) i will rate the albums of another band called "the Cure" (someone has mentioned "Disintigration" i think)
The Cure-
"Boys Don't Cry" 5/10- cure's first steps-nothing special here
"Seventeen Seconds" 6/10- Contains the dark "at night" ,the melancholic "in your house" and the sesperetaly ecstatic "a forest"(which is remixed by some trance outfit, blank and jones i think)
"Faith" 8/10-a Favorite album from the dark and bleak days of the cure.All tunes are talking about suicide or somethin(!). Anyway, this is an elegant and ingenious creation, from the dark pop of the "holy hour" to the driving darkwave of the "primary" and from the reverbed desperate quitar lines and echoing vocals of "The hanging man" to the slow and painfull piano-led "faith".Personal favorites are the two (dark)long ambient pieces in the middle of the album, the sweet "all cats are grey" and the ethereal lush synth ambience of the "funeral party".Excellent.
"Pornography" 8/10-The Cure(robert Smith) probably one step before suicide!The darkest and most gothic moment of the cure at a point which gets disturbing even for the listener(!).Not easy listening but very rewarding for the brave(and the massochists).A Claustrophobic and delerious atmosphere through out the album, produced with endless reverbed quitar lines and cold lush synths."1000 years","Short-term effect", "the figure-head","Cold","the hanging garden" all tunes are darkly epic.
"Japanese Whispers"5/10. So ,robert probably got his zoloft and prozac and now is a happy man!No dark things just happy-go-lucky electronic pop experimentation.Nothing really great for me here but it has it's good poppy moments(lovecats)
"the top" 3/10. Ok,to much anti-depressants are bad for you robert!This is very very stupid happy pop, the exact opposite of what "pornography" was.Now, i'm not a dark guy, i like happy music if it's arty but this is...terribly stupid.I can't even listen to this.
"The head on the door"6/10.Robert is stoping his medication oh how nice!It's still pop but in an arty, darky kind of way.Faith surelly isn't, but it's quite good.It has it's moments "push", "close to me", "in between says" , "a night like this".
"Kiss me kiss me kiss me"6/10.Ok half songs in this are good the other half are shite."Just like heaven" is a personal cheese favorite!
"Disintegration" 9,5/10. Woowww.Something happened here...it's surely the best cure moment!A Very epic synth-led album.It contains some nice 80s new-wave/dark-wave hits like "lovesong" the very famous orchestral "lullaby" and the longer and dynamically dreamy "pictures of you".But the real beauty is found in the less known tunes.the opening "plainsong" is a synth masterpiece, the "closedown" follows it's steps, "the last dance" has one of the best lead-lines i've ever heard.Songs 8-10 though are all slow/moderate atmospheric and ethereal tunes, what can i say about them.."prayers for rain" it's very moody, "the same deep water as you" is a 9 minute ambient masterpiece, "disintegration" is equally atmospheric and agressive, the last two piano-led tunes("homesick","untitled") dissolve in drama.Perfect.
"Wish", 6/10. This is a good alternative-rock album, but nothin really special in my opinion. "friday i'm in love" is a classic cheesy tune that i like, but the epic "from the edge of the deep green sea" is the best one.Could be in "disintegration" with less synths. Some nice moments but nothing reallly great.
"Wild Mood Swings", 6,5/10. Contains the very good "bare" featured in the movie the "crow" (if o remember).A nice dark rock album with some nice moments.
"Galore"4/10. Stupid pop is back.
"Bloodflowers", 7/10. This is according to robert smith the last cure album and the and the third gothic album of the cure's dark trilogy(which according to Robert are "pornography", "disintegraton" and this one).Very nice quitar lines, lot's of nostalgia this time round."Watching me fall" is an 11 minute epic and a very good one." Bloodflowers" is a classy tune. The real drama though lies in the tune entitled as "The loudest sound" a sweet mournfull ballad.the last beautifull moments by a great band.Sorry for the space iam always a sucker for reviews!

The first four tracks of In Side are excellent, but after that it's all just self-indulgent wankery. Out There Somewhere is really grotesquely long and does nothing to deserve 23 minutes of running time. The Saint is a bit of compensation as a bonus track, but it's nowhere near Orbital's peak moments.

I thought Snivilisation was decent throughout, but a bit dull. Too much endless analogue synths without the snap you want from Orbital. And Blue was magnificent- apart from the comedy tracks which are a waste of space there's not a dull moment on there. Brilliantly constructed tracks that cover loads of different territory. I haven't heard Middle of Nowhere enough to comment on it, but my lasting impression is: "Hell yes."

truly a masterpiece
i'd put "wish" higher up the scale though. listen to 'apart' (has a killer guitar solo) 'trust' and 'a letter to elise'. I didn't think much of the album the first time i listened to it, but the second time my opinion changed.

although I do prefer the 80s darker cure sound 'plainsong' has to be my favorite song by the cure... with 'the same deep water as you' and 'pictures of you' tied close second

bloodflowers was a nice touch, they should have stopped there IMO instead of releasing the self titled album in 2004

FA - 5/10 - definitely 'funky and crazy' very mr. bungle influenced
had the pleasure of hearing them play 'Take me to Your Leader' live on the last tour. wow.
S.C.I.E.N.C.E. - 10/10 - fucking unbelieveable soph effort
Make Yourself - 9/10 - love/hate relationship with this as it brought them a lot of commercial success, though the music wins out every time, great fuckin album.
Morning View - 7/10 - even more commercial success with this album, great tracks, just not as into this one as the others
ACLOTM - 9/10 - love where they took this album, a lot darker, more 'jam band' feel to it. what they were doing with sick, sad, little world live was incredible 10-12+ minutes, w/ a good 6 of that being mike jamming/creating solo on his axe.

i was lucky enough to be at their first ever gig at red rocks (released on dvd) and what a fucking night. first encore was 'pantomime' which is in my top 3 incubus tracks of all time (only played live, not on an album)

boys are currently working on a new album, should be interesting as they like to change things up album to album.

You all just made me realize Im a horrible fan. I dont own all the cds to my favorite bands.
