yeah but what happens when,
my explosive (hey hey, yoo hoo) melody with thick texty drums accompanying, which i start already on bar 33, has the DJ deciding to spend first 2 minutes of my track riding (is that the word) on top of another track, because the DJ felt like it!!!!!!!
and no one hears it!!!

anyway im sticking with Ishkurs comments and I wont trouble the DJ.

AND I AM for real, just making sure of things.

I'm bored, so I'll bite. I'm 100% with what everyone here is saying. I don't care how bangin your tune is, the DJ will mix it into his/her set the way he/she wants. I mix mainly melodic, uplifting trance at home for shitz n gigglz. The majority of the time I like to slowly blend the tracks. That means your intro isn't going to be heard on its own or in its entirety. It will be slowly faded up into the current track I'm playing out, for example. Granted, I do have a few tracks that I bring in more quickly and once the kick drum for the melody hits I'll fade out the other record completely and quickly. Now, I have only 3 or 4 tracks that sound good when done this way. The majority of my tracks only sound like they are mixed well when I ride out the mix for a good amount of time.

Just make your track the way
you want it.

when i said explosive i didnt mean bangin, or good, just really loud and not part of a build-up. some people reckon its shite actually.

great answer ZOZO by the way. that has really helped me not worry.

its also interesting how some mixes actually start with drums and a swirling pad right from the beginning (throughout 24 bars), like 2 of Madonnas 'SORRY'
REMIXES, one by Paul Okenfold.

I would like to have one of my remixes like that and i was worried that certain text books said i should avoid harmony and all that in the mix-in intro and basically have just percussive stuff mainly.

Ah, gotcha on the bangin/explosive part. In that case, if I were mixing your tune, I would more than likely have the other track mostly faded out by the time I knew an explosive part was about to drop on the new track. I generally prefer tracks that have a mainly percussive intro simply because I like to blend. However, like I said above, there are a few tracks I own that mix in quickly and sound good whilst doing so. For example, I like to mix 4 Strings - Let it Rain (E. Craig Remix) into Goldenscan - Only With You. Let it Rain has a brief intro, so I fade it up fast, and when the kick drum hits right before the melody, I drop the fader on Only With You all the way. It sounds great, and when friends are watching they think you've done something neat.

thats intersting ZOZO.

what are your opinions on mixes that start with drums and pads and effects straight away, from the word go.

are those hard to mix in, because of harmonic implications

i would love to start a remix with just kick drum and an ABSYNTH 3 type PAD swirling away for the first 32 bars mix-in intro, before the loud theme at bar 33, and am scared of doing it.

Now you're getting beyond my knowledge. I just play around with my tunes. Some tunes sound amazing when you blend them. Others are a trainweck from the moment you bring up the fader. I don't know enough about keys and harmonics, etc., to offer any real, intelligent insight. So I won't even fake it or begin to try.

Some tracks that I own have some mild effects in the intros other than just percussion. Fred Baker vs. Nyram - Recognition comes to mind as well as Phynn - Solitude. However, if mixed into the outro of the right track, these effects are not too over powering. They still mix well enough with the outgoing tune. So, with that logic in mind, I would say your track doesn't just have to have a percussion-only intro. Add the effects you like. Given enough time, I'd know what track to mix it into and out of.

I usually do fine on track selection of the records I own. I just put one on, hit play, and go from there. I know my records very well, so I just think, "Hell yeah, this track will blend well with this one" and start digging through my stack. Usually I'm right. Sometimes I train wreck, learn from it, and go on.
