Originally posted by AwakenedAddict FFS, read the article before you post. The issue has nothing to do with getting drunk on the job. As stated in the article, they banned all alcohol at this NLFD FD because they openly sold booze to the public. This has nothing to do with drinking on the job, as the article states "The other fire departments, they do have alcohol .... The alcohol is there for personal use for the firemen and, as far as I'm concerned, we should be allowed to do the same, said Stuckless." So.. in summary (kinda sad to have to summarize 1 minute worth of reading) the fire department sold booze to the public despite repeated orders to stop such activity. They did not comply. Now there is no booze allowed at all. This is not a debate about whether or not there should be booze allowed in fire departments, rather it's just a story of a fire department that tried to act like a bar, and got caught and reprimanded.

Originally posted by AwakenedAddict Are you insinuating that because people are allowed to possess alcohol at their workplace, they are constantly drunk?
Here's how I see it:
Consumption of liquor in the workplace is often prohibited. The fact that this is an essential public service only makes this more important. The Fire Hall being doubled as a bar should have NEVER occured to begin with, Whoever thought that up should be ashamed.
Big city, small town, it does not and should not matter. It's still a question of responsibility. By endorsing consumption of those substances in a workplace, to me that's grossly inappropriate and very unsafe. Anything that impedes or affects their ability to do their job effectively should be prohibited. This isn't a bunch of accountants getting shitfaced, these are FIREMEN.
Go ahead, let them walk off the job. I sure as hell would not want people with such immaturity and poor judgement protecting my property or family if a fire broke out.

I want to book a flight to NF and light fire to one of the fire fighter's houses.... we'll see how quickly they end their protest.

Originally posted by Cosmic Fur Yes I am. Not constantly, but "personal use" means drinking.
quote:
Originally posted by Cosmic Fur I don't know what other uses for drinkable alcohol there are.

Originally posted by Cosmic Fur Why are firefighters so concerned with being able to drink on the job?

Originally posted by AwakenedAddict You get off work, you have a drink. Fire fighters do not go to work drunk. Until you can PROVE otherwise, don't make unwarranted assumptions about other people.

Meanwhile in the news....

Originally posted by Cosmic Fur I'm gonna go back to my drinking under the age of 19 example. So when a 17 year old walks into a liquor store, should he be able to buy alcohol since they can't PROVE he's gonna go and drink it? He could be buying it for his uncle, after all. Smartass.

However, Mayor Robert Elliott says past problems at the hall prompted the town council to take a firm position. "The fire department has been told [on] many, many occasions, you can't sell beer. On many occasions they've never listened," Elliott said. "This is the only solution we saw. Take it out, [and] then you can't sell what's not there."

A gas station in Halifax was trying to increase it's sales. So the owner put up a sign saying "Free Sex With Fill-Up." Soon a Newfie pulls in, fills his tank, and then asks for his free sex. The gas attendent tells him pick to a number from 1 to 10 if he guesses correctly, he will get his free sex. The Newfie says, "8, b'y" The gas attendent says, "You were close, sir, but the number was 7. Sorry, no sex this time." A week later, the same Newfie, along with his buddy, pulls in for a fill up. Again he asks for his free sex and again the gas attendent gives him the same story and asks him to guess the correct number. The Newfie says, "4, b'y" The gas attendent says, "Sorry,it was 3. You were close, but no free sex this time." As they were driving away, the Newfie says to his buddy, "I think that game is rigged and he doesn't really give away free sex." The buddy replies,"No, b'y, it ain't rigged. My wife won twice last week."
