Hey, Cloud, didn't know you were so young!
I'm the same age as Cloud, and I listen to pretty much everything that's good.
My little journey summed up:

(Every title/artist represents the sound I was currently listening to during that period)

Darude - Sandstorm
Everyone who's got a TV or a radio have probably heard this song, and it is pretty catchy. I started liking things like this very slowly, so I thought I'd talk to someone to get a wider perspective on things.

Paul Van Dyk Feat. Hemstock & Jennings - Nothing But You
So I talked to my big brother, and I wanted something similiar to Sandstorm. He suggested something, can't remember what, but I probably liked it, and it was probably one of those commercial tracks. Anyway, I woke up one morning, and we had the computer standing under our my bed for a while (the bed is elevated with some poles or whatever, about 2 meters tall), so I heard Nothing But You. It was just... so God damn nice! I fell asleep again after a while, and dreamt a really nice dream.

Svenson & Gielen - Sunlight Theory
Yup, I was starting to check out the bigger names now. I started using the internet more and more, and I found stuff like this when I searched for "Trance" and "Dance" in various p2p programs.
I got my hands on a set by DJ Snowman (lol) and I really digged it! It had Arome (Scot Project Remix), Oasis 2003, The Music Inside, Mirage Of Hope (Lange Remix) and stuff like that, and hell... was it catchy or what?

Ever since then I've got more and more underground, and I've explored different genres: The harder sounds, and the more relaxing elements.
I listen to Holden, Zabiela, Sasha & Digweed, J00F, NASA (Okay, one set, but hell it's GREAT! Thanks Rebel! ), Blue Planet Corporation, FSOL, EM's, DJ MP's pE mixes, some ASOT and other trance shows. Everything!

Oh my, now you know all that - But damn, I'm pretty bored.

I'm 18, got into trance with a MoS album -addicted to trance- in 2002.

When I was much younger, I bought a lil bit of "electronic" stuff, without really understanding what it was all about- eg. olive- you're not alone, Sash (lol) and others but never really liked it much until 2002.

Then branched out into other MoS albums- Trance Nations, etc, then moved onto Ferry, Tiesto and Armin, etc.

I bought in search of sunrise 3 in June 2004- it blew me away- that's when it really started

I've always liked the fact that my friends arn't into all the electronic stuff- more rock/ pop and metal. Liking EDM made me feel "special" as no-one else ever seems to appreciate the emotion and subtelty (sp?) that you get from EDM. All they ever hear is the beat.

anyway...

My fav artist atm is ferry, just because of his originality and catchyness of (almost) all his tunes over the years.

I'm 29.

My EDM tastes started in the mid 90's with Euro. A Radio DJ in Chicago played 25 minute megamixes, which I enjoyed for 4-5 years. As that genre started to sound more 'kiddish' to me as I got into my 20's, this DJ also started releasing Trance megamix Cd's. I got into that in the 2000-2001 time, it has since grown on me.

The reason I'm still into EDM (maybe music at all) is largely because of this site and forum. I downloaded Armin Van Buuren's liveset from Club Eau 3-18-00 and got hooked. The forums are wonderful at keeping me in the loop as far as the big overseas parties and songs to check out. I don't post very often, but read nearly every day.

Recently there have been periods where the current Trance was boring me, and i thought maybe I had outgrown this too, like Euro. But events like ASOT 250 or the Tiesto concerts is all it takes to renew the passion for this music which especially in the US is very obscure. Or I just play the 'Ibiza's children' video to renew the motivation. The beauty of trance in the US is the only way to get tired of it is if I overplay it, since no local radio plays it here.

I am 19 years old. I think that trance is the best music genere- just the sounds of let's say G&M Project - Sunday Afternoon (Nu-Nrg RMX), or Carl B- all day of Primer- skywalker, Balin and Kane- open your eyes, armin van buuren- birth of an angel... My hair "stand up" when i listen to trance. No music can give you the enjoyment for your ears except trance.

It is interesting that i started dy listening to dance (artists like gabry ponte, gigi, scooter, groove coverage, floorfilla, haiducii...) and now... only electronic music

im 17 years young.
i started listening to trance only about 1 year ago. I just fell in love with trance. Mauro Picotto - Komodo(darude mix) really got me wanting to listen to more trance. I basically only like trance, mostly uplifting stuff. I have also found that the tunes from about 98 to 99 are a main core of my favorite tracks.

37, got into trance way back in 1985 by listening to the likes of The Ozric Tentacles who by the way are still making new albums
Even thou the genre of trance had not really been defined back then, as far as i'm concerned the Ozrics had that sound to them, it was thanks to them that i got my first taste of 'trance' which still continues, i've never fallen out of love with trance and still enjoy it as much today as i did back then.

I'm 19 but I've been listening to trance since I was 12. Kinda got fed-up with squeekly clean cheesy pop acts like A1, Bewitched and Five so thought I'd channel my musical tastes elsewhere.

First artists I heard were Paul van Dyk, System F, Jam and Spoon, York, Chicane, Storm, Da Hool, Basement Jaxx, the list goes on, but my ear was grabbed to PVD's stuff... unbeatable euphoric trance at its best!

So over time I discovered other artists and grew to like some in particular, the pop posters soon disappeared and the dance comps were coming in. (First dance CD - Sash "Encore Une Fois" First dance comp - Ministry of Sound "The Annual The Millenium Edition")

So basically went through euro-dance to general EDM and then a mix of trance, house and techno. Today it's mainly quality trance and electronica I'm into but I can't stand commercial dance like the "Clubland" or happy hardcore.

Paul van Dyk has been my fave DJ for over 7 years now and is now my role model, although I still have to meet him. My mates over the years have never liked dance, just rock, indie and punk so i'm still waiting on an oppurtunity of a proper club experience!

I'm barely 16 years old i like trance since i was 14 but since then i have been liking trance more and more... here in Acapulco the trance Scene SUCKS there r only a few dj's that play trance and i think that nobody of them really like it. personally i love trance in fact i have been deejaing since the past year. in the few parties that i have played (private parties nothing big really) i have noticed that the people really like trance but i think they haven't noticed his importance or they don't know about the trance scene in the world, because here in mexico PSYCHO rules and the people don't open their ears to other genres.
i hope the trance scene here grows and don't forget to visit my web page it isn't ready yet but it will be soon, i will upload some of my sessions, leave your thoughts about them and let me know your opinion, i don't care if it's bad haha thats why i want it. to improve

I'm 25. To me, trance has changed since i started listening. I've been addicted to trance since Late 2000. Before that I thought EDM was all gay house music. When I found there were other types of EDM, like trance which I much rather prefered, I began to explore in to its depths. I located tranceaddict in the beginning and found that by typing in tranceaddict.comwith Napster's search engine I was able to come up with tracks i considered "the best trance ever." and thats how I got my first impressions of what "real" trance is.

Needless to say, trance has progressed (no pun intended). I still listen to trance and I don't ever get tired of it... at all. I like the direction that trance is headed. the variety of different aspects that have influenced the new sound whch it has evloved from makes it much more involving than ever before.

But I still have those old tranceaddict compilations that i made about half a decade ago, and i think they are the best. I think they have more sentimental value than ever which is why i like listening to them so much. just the other day I found a copy of Rapid Eye's "Never Going Back" (Iberia Remix) and it made me feel so good to hear because its been so long.

I'm 21, and I started in the whole EDM thing around 2002, with the purchase of Moby's Play album. I attended summer school with a guy who dj'ed a bit with house and listened to some progressive trance, and he burned me a couple of cd's that really got my interest. John Digweed - MMII, Sasha - XPander EP, Danny Howells - Nocturnal Frequencies Vol. 3, etc.

I think I kept down the Sasha/Digweed path for the summer, until that fall someone gave me a copy of Summerbreeze by Tiesto. I didn't actually like it much at the time, but decided to try another trance album and bought Tranceport by Oakenfold. From there I just started listening to more and more, dabbling in Deep House (Naked Music/Om Records), Progressive Trance (Northern Exposure Series/Global Underground), and a few trance livesets from TA.

Today I still love some of the old GUs, as well as the newer ones from Warren and Howells. Mostly I listen to various forms of House today (Masiello, Warren, Porter, Howells, Sasha, Digweed), but every now and then I'll grab a liveset from Above & Beyond or Ronski Speed or someone. I don't hate trance now, but it's just a sometime-thing for me anymore. I do still love some of the old sets from 2001-2002, laced with now-classic Solarstone/Chicane/Thrillseeker productions.

My music tastes have diverged so much that I only dabble in Trance anymore -- I listen about equally to Trance, Rock, Classic Rock, Pop, Hip-Hop, Trip-Hop, House, Jazzy Electronic (Zero 7, etc.), and Progressive, so my musical knowledge in any one genre is probably kind of limited.

Im 21

I've almost completely gone off what gets called "trance" nowadays....

Bring back old-skool house-influenced tracks with more organic sounds/percussion etc I say (Lieb style etc...)

Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum and have been quite amused reading the huge number of posts slagging so and so DJ off and stating that such and such genre is absolute shit. Also read quite a few arguing about what type of trance is good and whats bad e.g. '98 '99 trance vs present day trance or techy trance vs armin style trance (please correct me now if I'm wrong but when you put ASOT I assume it stands for a state of trance).

Anyway, I think I'm gonna enjoy joining in some of the debates on here but was curious to know what sort of age the rest of you are and how long you've liked trance music. I'm guessing by a lot of the posts on here that many are in their teens but I could be completely wrong.

I would also like to know what your views on trance are at this time. Just a short paragraph is necessary. I will start us off so you know the sort of thing Im after.

I'm 23. I've liked trance since I was about 14 (1997ish). I still like trance but not as much as I did. Prefer the different styles that have developed - eg. tech-trance, electro-trance. I still think you can't beat pure uplifting trance but I find that I don't come across tunes of this sort that actually do it for me any more. Where as when I first got into it, they were ten a penny. Anyway I could go on and on but think I've set the picture...

there are alot of people here who think they know better then you ,yeah i hate those morons too ,specially the tiesto haters are stupid.

OMG

I totally wanted to do the twins

I'm 24. Been into trance on & off from the early-mid 1990s, mainly knowing music without knowing the id's, from livesets on tape & cd i'd buy which were recorded at local & national events. Went through many phases esp d&b, hardcore (the breakbeat style carl cox slipmatt etc used to play) before moving onto hhc when i was 13/14 & the more i moved on the more i appreciated the older sounds too, and still do. As trance got big, i lived through it all, some amazingly happy times. Nowadays my 'trance' is different to most peoples, having outgrown the tired & st ale osunds of some DJs i've once again gone on my own paths to find songs that work for me.

Posted by teknotexan on Jun-15-2006 23:46:

I'm now 26, and my first experience with electronic music was listening to Beethoven Sonata's to a cheesy drum beat with my mother in the car back in the mid eighties. Does anyone else remember those mixes?? Anyways, Vangelis and later Enigma sparked a keen interest in electronic music. Then Madonna, basically every album got me into dance music. Then La Bouche, Real McCoy, etc. in the early 1990's. But oddly enough, it was Nine Inch Nails and White Zombie that got me into modern dance beats. It was those background beats I loved to listen to, that mad me want more. It all changed with Crystal Method, when a b-boy switched a cd on us to "chage the vibe" at a local party. It was ona a 2 cd comp. that I bought soon afterward. On that cd was a BT song "Flaming June", and it blew me away! Well, a couple years later, I move to the Bay Area and go to a SF party. WOW! That was 1998, and the song was Binary Finary, PVD mix. Partied alot til 2001ish, then got jaded and learned the guitar. Sold my decks and my Roland synth, and my records collected dust. Well, I started to do p2p downloading later on, and it was this that helped spark my interest again. Then this website, then the clubs again. I love proggy anything, but trance will always be in my blood. Like most of this type of dance music, you need to experience it to truly appreciate it. Buying a cd doesn't do any song justice, for every one was meant to played loud and in a club!
TRANCE FOREVER!!

Trance is at its peak right now, I love it, Above and beyond, AVB, Tiesto, etc. are kicking it right. i love trance at outdoor shows, Ultra, cental park, festivals etc. Trance has replaced most rock on my I pod. I feel kind of old still being into EDM, but i love the music

I agree. When I was 19, I loved uplifting trance. Then my father passed away and I got into darker, more dirty proggy house. I hated the happy shit, but as I have matured in my taste, so has my choice in trance. I like very particular things about trance or proggy house, and for those peculiarities, the music will never get old. I was in love with trance/house/proggy long before I knew what it was. Some people aren't as musical as others, so of course the fad gets old for them. I don't give a fuck. I'll hit the club solo if my friends bail on me, just to here a dj.
