if that makes any sense.... |
of course it makes sense.. it isn't a sound that you can just throw out there after you have been playing the electro progressive house beats... we need to be brought into it gradually imo
unless of course you absolutely love it and then there isn't an issue

Very true. It's happening. I think to make it more appealing to the masses I guess.

I personally think that minimal is "old fart" music
just like my dad that started listening to jazz/classical music.. i remember when i was a kid, we would be in the car and he would blast dance or trance or w/e it was in the car about 10-15years ago and now whenever i go in his car he's listening to classical music on low volume.
This is the same feeling i get with minimal and as you notice sasha and lawler and others have been in the scene for a while and it feels like their styles have changed, they are tired of the "banging sound" and just want to relax and play relaxing music (minimal). I dont know if im making sense but thats what it feels like.

of course you can dance to minimal. its very hypnotic.....find a grove and make it ride the entire set

The sound is starting to evolve....now it seems to be minimal with a dash of funk....or minimal with a wee bit of a melody.
With that new sound of minimal emerging it will become alot more appealing to those who don't care for the minimal everyone knows.
Minimal...but not minimal I think you said it best Ryan

it has been for a while.
not in north america because north america is always two steps behind but in places like london + berlin that is defo the big sound now and you cant get away from it. some shit sounds cool, while other stuff is incredibly boring. but thats the same as with any other genre of music.

discussion not proclamation please. |
This was a debate that was had a year or two ago...I don't know what minimal John Digweed is playing but if he's just started playing it then he's a little behind the times!
Germany and Detroit have been pushing forward the minimal sound for years.
As with any other genre, there's some really good stuff out there but there's a whole lot of crap. Everyone wants to produce what's hot right now.
When I hear Angello and Ingrosso being called minimal I cringe. Minimal, as it was intended to be, and how it originated before all of the hype, can be heard from artists like Hawtin, Gaiser, Magda, Troy Pierce, Anja Schneider, Dan Bell, Donnacha Costello, Guido Schneider, etc...
It is not everyone's cup of tea but to brand minimal as something that can't work on a dancefloor means you're not hearing good minimal! A few weeks ago I heard Richie, Ricardo Villalobos, Magda, Troy Pierce and Marc Houle play for almost 8 hours total in Montreal. I went to go check out the sound on the dancefloor and did not leave for pretty much the entire time! even as my legs were about to give out I found more energy! Never ever have I heard minimal played quite like that, it was just incredible (and this coming from a girl who started off loving the hard techno and nothing else!)
Minimal is not just boom tss boom tss...it is deep and round and sometimes dirty, sometimes melodic, but just makes you want to jack your body on the dancefloor.
I'm gonna go listen to some minimal right now me thinks.

mininal is wikkid to listen to at home while chilling or doing stuff around the house ..... but it just don't work for me at the club it's too ... umm i dunno just blah too .... minimal, just don't get my feet movin i feel like siting down and chatting with ppl whenever it's on ..... i dunno it just don't pump me up to get up and dance like house does ( oh btw i'm not a wagon hopper i have been a house snob for years)

I agree that the minimal sound started to take over the same way electro did a year or two ago. It also has the same 'love it' or 'hate it' attitude shared amongst EDM listeners. Though i find lots of this peticular genre quite bland, if you dig enough there are some serious gems out there. I dont think I would really enjoy a full on minimal set for a night out, but when it is placed in a set at the right time and complimented by a variety of sounds - it can be deadly (in a good way of course).

Generally, I find the people who turn their nose at minimal are the ones who regularly party with "assistance."

I like minimal a lot, and have liked it for a couple of years now, but come on Sarah. This is a really snobby comment.

I don't particularly see "minimal" crossing over as well as electro for a few reasons. The main one for me is that I find it narrowing in terms of DJ compatibility.

It's funny - I was going to say the exact opposite.

Agreed, but i guess i was more comparing it in the sense that it seemed to come out of no where - and that EVERY big has incorporated the minimal sound into their sets.
It definately wont cross over as well as electro, due to it's darker and more underground feel - way less mainstream potential is likely the key reason.

but that is something I've noticed! Don't put words in my mouth.

i dunno...i think with any genre popularity ebbs and flows. it just so happens that minimal is the "next big thing" right now (remember prog?), even though it's been around for a while.
i like quite a bit of it, actually. but i don't like music that's really hard and fast, so i find i can get into it very easily. then again, i also don't like a lot of it. as with any genre you've got stuff that's good and stuff that's bad.

See in my head, a quintessential element of minimal is being slow. lol I don't know shit.

I fucking hate minimal. What Digweed is starting to spin, Sasha as well, what Trentemoller has moved to, what Burridge is spinning, and the shit that DJ Vibe spun in two of his May Dancefloor sets that I listened to three times, repeating "no, no, please, NO" before I SHIFT+Delete-ed them.
This genre is going to put the Bloor St. DVP overpass in big business again. I'm going on a cage climb next time I'm subjected to it.
k, I hope that was at least somewhat humorous. I'm not a genre-hater. To each their own. I just won't listen. I just hate when DJs I've liked start spinning shit I don't like. I was REALLY getting into Lee Burridge last fall, then....POOF. *bleep bleep bleep boop boop bleep*
And when has Lawler ever played a minimal track??
p.s. I haven't done drugs in almost 2 years.

Actually, I'm going to have to agree with her. Most of the people I know that really enjoy mnml are always sober. It probably has nothing to do with liking the music, but I just found it interesting. I don't think the same applies to the deejays though lol.
