i think we've had this argument before though.

"WAAAAHHH!! look at me in a diaper and more eye liner than a trannie in south beach. WAAAH! my mommy and daddy abused me and i grew up in a disfunctional family so i'm a proud freak and i'm so much cooler and smarter and better than everyone now and i love to push the limits of society and conforming idiots"

i'd like to shove a baseball bat up his ass, although it would probably slide right in.

wait a minute, that just sounded like something marilyn manson would want to do.

Yeah, he's a rockstar.

And every time I mention his name like ANYWHERE On TA, you always show up.

It's all an act. It's too bad you don't get it. He really has some important things to say.

Also, the technical mastery he possesses is quite remarkable. Did you know that the drums from Antichrist Svperstar are all synthetic? And the work he did on the score for the first Resident Evil movie was great as well.

So yeah he's a whiny freak who lets everyone know how messed up he is, but he does it for a reason so just take a step back and analyze what that reason might be. He's really quite talented when it comes to music production and the great big facade he takes on is also quite entertaining.

All true artists are fucked up in some way...

Posted by Slylee on Jun-27-2006 18:28:

i find it annoying when people put on a huge "mask" if you will, and giggle at everyone trying to figure out their "deep" and "artistic" personalities, when really, they aren't very different at all when you break them down. i think he takes himself a little too seriously and i dont really have time to analyze him. he's a fucking moron.

i like people who are "what you see is what you get". there's too much to do in this world and too many people to meet so i dont like to waste time trying to get to know someone who goes the extra mile in making it extremely difficult. sorry, but i have better things to do.

and yes, you're right. i always argue about him. lol i read his book, and i was the one laughing at him the whole time. it was amusing.

You should, they're even better than Hooverphonic (at least, that's what I think), it's not for nothing that the link to their site has been in my sig for months..

They've got an album coming up.. Someday.

As for Hooverphonic.. My favourite album is 'The Magnificent Tree', lots of goodies on that one. Haven't given the latest album too many listens yet, but I really should. Proud owner of all the others.

Also check out their take on Depeche Mode's 'Shake the disease'. Excellent!

Re: Awesome artists - not trance

As always when one of these threads pops up, I quote my "timeless albums" post that has appeared in almost every "Non-EDM Music You Like" thread, Enjoi

Talib Kweli & DJ Hi Tek - Reflection Eternal

I can't listen to just one track on this disc, I have to listen start to finish to the whole thing every time I listen to it, arguably, IMO, the greatest hip hop album of all time.

Phish - Billy Breathes & Rift

Two "concept" albums that again, I have to listen to all the way through every time I hear them. Bill Breathes is definitely great bedtime music, and the dreams theme to Rift is great. I'm a HUGE Phish fan (Have a Phish tattoo, did two tours, pretty much obsessive for a while), and out of everything I've ever heard them do, live or studio, I'd say I could make a strong argument as to why Billy Breathes is the greatest thing they've ever done.

Grateful Dead - Shakedown Street

Come on... I was once quite hipped out... This album kills...

A Tribe Called Quest - The Love Movement & Beats Rhymes & Life

If you like chill hip hop with a bit of jazzy vibe and you haven't listened to ATCQ yet, you're missing out. Beats Rhymes & Life is a bit more sample heavy along the lines of DJ Premiere style productions, The Love Movement is just pure sex on wax.

Beck - Sea Change

I love this album, it's comforted me in my times of most crackiness. I have one very vivid memory in particular of listening to this in bed around 10 in the morning after a certain Hernan/Sharam/Oakey show this summer...

Gang Starr - Full Clip: A Decade of Gang Starr

DJ Premiere might be the all time greatest producer in the history of hip hop, Guru's flow is sick. Again, a must if you're into hip hop at all.

John Scofield w/ MMW - A Go Go

Straight chill jazz, another album that after a really long night of pure EDM crackiness has really helped me and friends come home and just chill out, listen to some mellow ass jazz, smoke bowls, and come down.

MMW - Combustication, The Dropper, and End of the World Party

Combustication and The Dropper are pure Jazz trio goodness, with Combustication having some pretty interesting contemporary collaborations on it. Everyone who is on TA should listen to "End of the World Party" just for the fact that it's soooooooo electronically influenced. MMW are truly phenomenal, and will definitely make Jazz accessible to those of you who aren't familiar.

Pearl Jam - Vs. and Vitalogy

Another band I'm a huge fan of, Vs. is a legendary album that a lot of people seem to have missed with great tracks like Dissident and Daughter. Vitalogy is just a weird and interesting album for them, but I love it. They also put on a better live show than pretty much any band I've ever seen. Interesting side note: The time I freaked ou on 2c-T-7 was at a PJ show Also, another band that I have a tattoo of.

And last, but certainly not least...

The Talking Heads - Remain in Light

Probably one of the single greatest albums of all time, it's definitely in my top 5, if not my favorite album of all time. it just flows incredibly well, and the weird funk of the Talking Heads is just something I can never get enough of. Born Under Punches is pure, unadulterated, dirty funk.

I also want to highly reccommend The Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense, just because it's a great live album, and it has a great version of my favorite TH track "Naive Melody (This must be the place.)

Well, that was fun for me... I really hope that at least some of you decide to check out some new tunes you might not have heard before, or a genre that you wouldn't have checked out... And if any of you want any more info, or some help with "experiencing" this music, shoot me a pm...

Cheers,

If you really believed that the world was a great, big place with lots to do and lots of people to meet, then why would you hang yourself up on only liking one variety of person?

Marily Manson may go out of his way to put all of his odd tendencies up front, but how do you know that what you see isn't what you get? Perhaps he is one of the most honest people out there. In my experience, the most normal-seeming people are the ones with the most to hide. People who revile the odd things in life and are afraid to tolerate things that do not support their prejudice are the ones who are truly fucked up. Manson's great act is that he pretends to be a hateful, prejudiced person, garnering as much attention as he can get while still having some depth to his character. People critical of this and the message behind his music will come to realize that he is prodding fun at religious and prejudiced America by pretending to hate or support whatever is most controversial. When we feel so much towards a certain subject, it can sometimes blind us - I guess the great goodness behind Manson's art is that he exposes this feeling, this elicited hatred and addresses it, dissects it in front of everyone so we can see what we do to ourselves. Like I said, it's all an act.

I guess if you think he's stupid or something, that's cool too.

But the more you hate him, the more you play his game. Laugh at him, call him a fag, whatever...listen to his music and maybe you'd realize who is laughing at whom.

Hope you don't think I am trying to change your mind about him or anything - it's pretty apparent that your opinion is cemented into your head. Cemented opinions are funny though. The more your opinion stays the same, the smaller your world gets. But it's a great big world with lots of different people in it, right?

i wouldn't necessarily say that people who keep it simple and real are a specific group of people, like for example, "rockers" or "tree hugging hippies". i think the type of people i'm talking about are actually part of a more broad classification. like really, there's only 2 people in this world. people who are content with themselves and drama-free and dont really go out of their way to be a certain labled image...there's no hidden agenda really. i think it's refreshing that's all. and then there's people who are the opposite. confused, angry, "deep", emotional, "artists", dramatic creatures who are really just narcissists. lol

quote:

Marily Manson may go out of his way to put all of his odd tendencies up front, but how do you know that what you see isn't what you get?

well if that's the case, then i DEFINITELY dont like him. i'm not really down with S&M freaks in metal diapers on stage feeding on young, angry, confused teenagers to fill his pockets.

quote:
Perhaps he is one of the most honest people out there.

maybe, but do we (or you) know this for a fact? i think not.

quote:
In my experience, the most normal-seeming people are the ones with the most to hide.

Yes that is true too. People with issues come in all shapes and sizes. I agree with you here.

quote:
People who revile the odd things in life and are afraid to tolerate things that do not support their prejudice are the ones who are truly fucked up.

Ok, so I'm fucked up because I loathe beastiality and incest? I'm just thinking of two "odd things in life" here. Yes these 2 things do not support my "prejudice" so i'm fucked up. MM is into some pretty raunchy and disgusting things that he performs on stage, and i honestly do not care for his music. this does not make me afraid to tolerate it. i just don't like it. you're looking too deep into this when really it's quite simple. lol

quote:

Manson's great act is that he pretends to be a hateful, prejudiced person, garnering as much attention as he can get while still having some depth to his character.

well then, if he "pretends" and doesn't show his true colors, who is really afraid here? and he shouldn't be surprised or amused at all by people's reactions which are quite predictable. he's not doing anything new or meaningful here if you ask me.

quote:

People critical of this and the message behind his music will come to realize that he is prodding fun at religious and prejudiced America by pretending to hate or support whatever is most controversial.

so does he really even know who the fuck he is or what he stands for? lol

quote:
When we feel so much towards a certain subject, it can sometimes blind us -

agreed. trust me, i'm not some bible preaching freak either.

quote:

i'm sorry but i still fail to see any reasoning behind bringing more hatred into this world than there already is. or even disecting it, stirring it up, instigating it, whatever he does.

quote:

I guess if you think he's stupid or something, that's cool too.

no but when i think of him, i think of a funny line from dennis leary's "no cure for cancer" when he talks about people in therapy griping about their childhood. "my mother didn't love me...my father didn't pay attention to me, waah, bla bla bla"

leary: "SHUT THE FUCK UP, NEXT"

quote:

But the more you hate him, the more you play his game. Laugh at him, call him a fag, whatever...listen to his music and maybe you'd realize who is laughing at whom.

*thinks*

nah, i'm still laughing at him. lol and really, this is the only time i get into arguments about the guy. i'm sitting here bored to death at work, and this is stimulating for me, but trust me, i dont go into these long winded arguments about marilyn manson all the time in person. the guy hardly crosses my mind, unless i turn on my favorite rock station, hear that his song is on "personal jesus" and then i think, "ehh, no thanks" and change the station

are you assuming that i'm this narrow-minded conservative?

you're wrong if you are.

and i dont think you're trying to change me or my opinion. i know you are. lol

it's all good though, i like arguing with u.
