I love vinyl. And imo a track is an "offical" release once its on vinyl.

but as I slowly slow down my vinyl collecting to save up for CDJs, I've been looking through mp3 sites, and there are A LOT of great underground mp3 labels with some massive tunes that hardly anyone plays. sure, they're not mastered very well, but its good to have those tracks in ur back pocket as a nice little secret weapon during a set.

Tell me. What ever happened to 8-track and cassette tapes? And, since you bring up floppies, you don't see those gargantuan 8-inch or 5.25-inch floppies anymore

Eventually, CDs will probably go away as well - it will be a while though. As more and more people get online, more companies will sale songs via an electronic format. As this happens, the companies still selling CDs will have to convert to electronic media since it's cheaper and they have to remain competitive in the market place. Quite a few people own some sort of flash memory - this is the future media. They will just keep getting cheaper and cheaper to produce where eventually, they will be cheaper than CDs - I am assuming market demand will push this into reality.

Ultimately, it will be a fun and interesting ride.

yeah I do think so however it will be either the lovers or the bigger companies spending their money on pressing them. Not much small companies can bare the costs of vinyl unfortunately. However, back in the days they could. So I think it is a matter of having a decent bussines plan as well as having a proper amount of money before starting your own label. Many people make it too easy for themselves, especially now with cheap (near cost-free) mp3 releases.

i followed this thread since i started it, and i must say, some of you make valid points. However, it has somewhat turned out to be more of a will vinyls&cds last 4ver? thread. off course they wont.

what i actually was thinki8ng while i posted was "a vinyl release is more cred than mp3 release".. if i was gonna go argue like what is best and shit, i'd ask this in the DJ Booth. However, what are your points as a producer?

a vinyl release means more for your credibility no end.

it means the track is worth spending a lot of money on to have it pressed. BUT - i think this prestige will soon die out. it is only a matter of time until the big labels notice that they can get away with a digital only release. if there is no vinyl then people will buy digital. simple. its just until the main labels decide to pull out of vinyl releases, then everyone will follow.

thing is, if i was offered a vinyl release with a smaller company like 'f&w' or a digital only release with armada or black hole i would choose the digital release. the label name means more to me that the media my track is released on.
