Go with ProgPsy... it is the only thing I can think of that is somewhat similer to the older sounds. Or maybe Marco V, J00f or Christopher Lawrence...

then fucking do something about it but whining like a big baby. how many other people are going to sit around crying about how trance is dead and thats it, just talk...

too many people talk these days, no one actually does anything about it

Eh, '99 trance is still going on, probably at just as steady a pace as ever. Only difference between then and now is the production's been beefed up as trance producers have gotten their hands on better studio equipment. But the template is still the same. Same structure, same keys, same effectiveness*. Trouble is so much of it sounds the fucking same from track to track.

*I say effectivness with regards to if you are (for the most part) new to the music. Of course, as you move on, your expectations for new music to continuously surprise becomes greater in order to capture that same thrill you had when you first heard something new. Many popular trance producers, though, don't seem to be interested in doing this, quite content to keep going with what worked in '99 since there's still plenty of new kids on the block to sway to their sound.

not true. current trance is very different. Trance nowadays is a lot more boring and repetitive & uninspired sounding. It used to be a lot more variety and more fun/interesting. It had a lot more of a sould back then and I much prefer to listen to/play trance from pre-2003 than most of what comes out since then.

This kind of topic is dead.

Posted by Spacey Orange on Jul-03-2006 20:03:

to be clear, real trance really never existed, it was all an illusion perpetuated by pimps.

Well......,I think you should start listing to Armin van Buuren's A.S.O.T. episodes.

The latest episode, 255 had again some amazing new tunes.
Some I really liked:

Black Pearl - Bounty Island (DJ Shah's san Antonio Harbour mix)(Armada)
Nu NRG - Kosmosy (Monster Tunes)
Cape Town - Proglifter (Banshee)

If those aren't trance, then I don't know what is trance any more. Or, maybe better, you don't....

right now trance is thriving... like a blue whale on dry land.

Haaa Haaa

This is the "every-two-month-topic" of TA...LOL.Well...it's not dead but due to "financial reasons" it unfortunately didn't evolve. It's this "super-saw" synth...pad break...kick-back with a stronger super-saw synth...throw and 2-3 note pianos and sometimes some really bad vocals (with terrible lyrics as well!)and there you have it."Crowd reaction guaranteed".

Not one of these threads again...for christ's sake, give it up! These threads are becoming more and more repetitive...predictable. Some say trance doesn't sound enough like it did pre 99, some say it sounds too much like 99, some say it sounds different from 99. These arguments are subjective, it's not like the style is completely died out, it's because YOU don't like or are not finding out what is out there. But genres evolve, and you can't expect everything to sound the same. Rock has evolved over time, so is trance and other genres. It would be boring if it stayed the same for many years. Electronic Dance music especially evolves much faster than other music styles, with new genres and sub-genres developing. And it's a fairly new genre, only has been an established genre for about 25 years, before then there was electronic music but not all of these genres and sub genres of it. It wasn't until during and after disco area that it really came around, with house and techno being developed when disco went underground in the early 80s. There was electronics in disco but not as prevalent as in house and techno of course.

Posted by RapidFire on Jul-04-2006 03:44:

dont be stupid. the genre has evolved to the point where it has a mainstream appeal and most of the good stuff has to be seeked out, thats all. there are still bangin tunes and bangin djs in vein of the 90s.

Nah. Take any current 'choon', put it in a '99 setting when it was still fresh, and it'd be deemed a classic. It only sounds uninspired today because producers have been doing the same thing for the last 6-8 years, merely using the latest mastering techniques to keep it 'current' sounding. When it comes to music, familiarity breeds boredom.

as long as this thread keeps coming. shit will never die. and i thank you for it. long live trance.

You know, I bought the ASOT 2006 CD and I was stunned. The tracks I have been producing sound great, but compared to what is on ASOT 06, my stuff is pure shit. Will I evolve? I think so.

lol.. of course it's to be expected that a topic like this will bring about some ridiculous views/discussion.
So it's all the same except for these revolutionary new mastering techniques people use? That's quite the theory you've got on mastering! If what you are saying is true, then shouldn't something from pre-2003 sound all the more boring then rather than a new tune which has just come out?

Why is it that I have heaps of stuff from 1999-2003 that sounded better to me then as well as still to this day than 99% of 2005/2006 trance? More interesting, more of a soul, more fun, and a lot more memorable. Shouldn't I be so bored of those tracks?

Because these tracks bring you all the good memories back, because these tracks were the first ones that gave you the goosebumps, because these tracks got you into it. Its the same thing as with the old people listening to the songs from their youth. Its not because the music is better, people just want to bring the good old days back, they want all the things happen again.

That's really not it. I know the difference between appreciating something for it's nostalgic relevance, or appreciating something strictly for what it is. That wasn't the music that got me into it, or even the music that got me started with DJing. If that was the case I'd be pulling out my old Reactivate 9 & 10 records from 94/95 etc. I'm talking about specifically trance from 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002.. which also happens to be trance from when it was at it's peak. It's not some unexplainable cultarul phenomenon how trance took a massive plunge after that in terms of it's respectability and appreciation globally. House has been around all through that time and it hasn't suffered that fate. The productions just went downhill. The music stopped being interesting or captivating to a lot of people myself included. It doesn't mean I just grew out of Trance and that I'm not able to appreciate a great trance track.. because once in a while I do hear something great that really stands out. The harder it is for people to find great tracks though or the less great tracks there are to go around, the more shitty stuff you are going to hear people playing and progressively that will turn people off of the music or going to the events.

I'm absolutely sick of dolts on here complaining about how trance nowadays is sooooo shitty and in 1999 it was soooooo neat. Geezus, your wrong. Good trance is being made today just as it was in '99 just as it was in '00, '01, '02 etc. You just have to find it. Face it, trance quality hasn't changed, YOU HAVE. Get over it.

Right. Things are just the same as in 99-02 and trance is just as popular and there are just as many great tracks being produced.
I must be imagining things. We had Scott Bond here over the weekend.. big weekend too being canada day long weekend. Yet the dancefloor consisted of around 30 people. When he came here in 2000 it was absolutely packed and was the ONLY place to be on that night.
There is a reason that this topic comes up so often.. it's because unfortunately it's quite true. Nowadays any time I hear an amazing trance track I feel like the person should be given a gold medal for achieving something so rare.
