Yeah - to be one of the top djs you have to have both, track selection and top notch mixing.

But the mixing all depends on what elements you want to include in your set. You could have a tracklisting of driving trance, but at the end of the day, if you mix the tracks right at the end, you jus get a poor continuation and lose the crowd.

I think the mixing is all part of how you want to brink the current track selection across.

Good examples of good tracklisting but shocking mixing - look no further than oakenfold.

Track selection is by far the most important, because every DJ should have basic mastery of mixing skills. It's creative track selection that seperates the best DJs from the mediocre ones.

Track selection includes more than just playing great tracks though. It's all about flow and compatibility, energy and harmonics. Working the crowd. That's what takes skill.

I see it this way: a bad mix is like 1 minute, a bad track is 6-8 minutes!
True I like it when they mix very good but most people don't even notice these trainwrecks and such...

I have to agree with just about everything thats been said so far.
I for one believe that mixing makes the better dj. I cannot stand to hear djs trainwreck. Especially live. when i hear a dj trainwreck I just wanna take the record off of the turntable and smash it over the djs head.
Anybody can have good taste in music. A good tracklist is nothing if i can't stand listening to the dj murdering the tune.

But this is just my opinion and though it is a bit harsh but I strongly believe that any dj who trainwrecks or has lousy track selection with good mixing should just call it quits before someone breaks a record over yer head!

i think both are important... i would have say that the track selection would be bit more important because if you don't like the tracks then it doesn't matter how they are put together.

Track selection would be top of this list imo.

You can get off with mixing badly as long as you have the track selection (fatboy slim would be a prime example of this), however you I'd be pretty sure if your transitions were as smooth as digweed, but you played a 4 hour set of oompa loompa music you'd loose the crowd pretty fast.

For a DJ there's no question both HAVE to be good if not, I say pack up go home and learn how to mix good music...
