indeed

ill ask john and if it is ok with him it will be ok with me.

JOHN DAHLBCK
[STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN DAHLBCK RECORDS / PICKADOLL / GIANT WHEEL]

Born in Stockholm, Sweden, John moved to a small village outside Stockholm at an early age. From the start music was an important part of John`s life, both his parents being musicians. His older cousin, Jesper Dahlback, wasted no time to introduce him to house music. Music being omnipresent in his surrondings it only seemed natural for John to begin his own producing journey.

In only a few years John has released records on some of the most respected labels around the globe, such as Turbo, Joia, Giant Wheel, Silverplanet, Underwater, Systematic, Dessous, Morris Audio, Brique Rouge to name a few. John has also taken the venture to run his own record label, Pickadoll and Dahlbck Records which he runs with his cousin Jesper.

Johns music is a sonic amalgam of minimal techno, burbling electro and a very light touch of dream inducing house. His artistic approach is calculated and at the same time rich of textures, warm chords and electronic melodies that gel well, gliding freely without ever dipping in quality. Its no exaggeration to say that the number of releases bearing the Swede's name is almost unnerving, especially when the man in question is in his early 20s.

Few people have risen to dominate their chosen genre faster than John Dahlbck. Sure, his father was a well-regarded musician in Sweden and his cousin, Jesper, is one of the most respected names in the world of techno, but John has taken this jump start and used it to lap the field many times over. He has already exploded on the European scene, and is now giving Montreal an exclusive appearance. There are many noteworthy entries in his discography, but instead of naming them all, the best advice we can give you is to come and celebrate DISKHOs first year anniversary and listen to John Dahlbck alongside local talents Sad Mafioso who has recently released on Vitalic`s record label Citizen, Mateo Murphy, Bender and Jeff Grosse the 15th of September at the Fondrie Darling and be prepared to be blown away.

dahlback interview

Bruce: You rank amongst the most successful and prolific techno producers of the
past 18 months. In fact, it seems there is a new John Dahlbck record every
3 weeks. Do you produce full-time? How do you manage to keep on releasing
quality records at such a pace?

John: It's not really that I'm sitting 24/7. I know my way around in
the studio, I know how I want it to sound etc... And when it comes to some
tracks, I want to finish them while I still got the vibe from the track.

Bruce: HUG & Huggotron tracks get a lot of play in Montral. Both share similar
tech-house inclinations yet sound very different. How do you approach each
of your solo projects? Does each one have an intended "feel" to it?

John: Yes of course, the only name that hasn't got a special sound is
actually John Dahlbck. Under my real name, I have a more exploring touch,
like one day I can do a really acid-ish remix and the other day I can do
more of a minimal 12". My name isn't stucked to any particular style while
Hug & Huggotron is more specialized. Hug is my definition of minimal and
Huggotron is the darker and harder pseudonym.

Bruce: We keep reading in different publications that Jesper is alternatively your
father, brother, uncle or cousin. For the record, would you care to clear
up this mess for our readers?

John: He's my lovely cousin.

Bruce: It was to be anticipated that you would eventually team up with
Jesper. However,
the story of Hugg & Pepp is bound to have more twists & turns to it. So,
how did Hugg & Pepp happen? Was there any hesitation on either side as far
as working with each other was concerned?

John: The Hugg & Pepp story isn't actually that fun or interesting haha.
Me and Jesper decided to do some stuff together in the studio one day and
for a short time we did a lot of tracks. And thought it would be for the
best if we started our own imprint where we release everything. And the
collaboration is really good, we have a lot of similar thoughts but still
totally different.

Bruce: One of your record companies, Pickadoll, has a very - let's say intriguing
logo. Would you care to elaborate?

John: The logo for Pickadoll is so right. It says everything. It's dirty,
dark, intriguing and it's going straight to your memory.

Bruce: Although retaining strong ties with what we've become accustomed to hearing
from you, your full-length "Man from the Fall" is relatively accessible in
comparison to your full-on club tracks. Was this deliberate throughout the
production of the music included on the record, seeing as it was intended as
a full length album? If so, how do you approach songwriting differently
when it comes time to prepare a full-length?

John: "Man From The Fall" is all about the blend. It's a mixture of
listening and club. And it's so fun working on an album because when you're
working on just a 12" you're thinking all about making people dance. But
when you're making an album, you want people to be interested in listening
through the whole 70 minutes and you want to "reach" people on another way
than on the dancefloors.

Bruce: If I'm not mistaken, you've got a new album coming out soon. Can you tell
us a little more about it?

John: Yes, there's coming a new album soon which is called "At The
Gunshow". It's going to be released on Pickadoll and will be out this
winter. It's a quite darker album that "Man from the fall". It's got that
edgy Pickadoll-sound and the whole album is packed of emotions in a quite
un-obvious way. Just as Pickadoll is my little baby, this album is also.

Bruce: Where do you see dance music going in the next few years, and how do you
see your sound evolving?

John: Oh it's really hard to predict dance music. Anything could happen,
old styles could be popular again and so on. I don't think it's going to be
MORE minimal than it is today, I believe it will be the opposite. When it
comes to my sound, I have no idea as well haha. I will always do things that
feel right. And when it comes to music I will always do the tracks that I
like.

Bruce: What's next for John Dahlbck?

John: Next thing, I don't know. I have signed a lot of good stuff for
Pickadoll from other artists so you should look out for that. And I'm
working more with Kompakt, so watch out for Hug.

Awersome! He's my fav producer ATM. Just like it was mentioned in the interview, the guy produces sick music at a sickening pace.

I just ask one favour...can you have play for 3hrs instead of two??

This will be a good night for sure, all the DJ's kick ass especially Sad Mafioso. My dream though is for Jesper to come out from under the booth and knock his brother out and start playing crazy techno .

i concur,
i just dont want to slight some of the cities locals as a track is a track, its how you put them together.Either way i'm looking forward to seeing what style he plays because he really throws different sets together...its a good thing.
