-- would you rather be blind or deaf???
Pages (3): « 1 [2] 3 »
my mom has de macular degeneration, and she's legally blind now. when she was diagnosed with it like 5 years ago, my mom didnt even know what to do, basically being told she was going blind and it was to far in to be helped. progressivly its got worse and worse. she can see the figures of people that are far away, but cant tell who they are unless they are right by her. eventually she will never be able to see again at all, and that will be that. shes not allowed to work, licence was taken away which was the hardest thing for her. shes been learning braille with the CNIB and starting to learn how to use the cane.
it sucks being helpless and not able to do anything to change it, but you cant.
when I find that girl, and I get married, my mom will never know the face of my wife, not be able to see us getting married, and never see the faces of my kids.
I'd rather be deaf.
Very tough choice. Even though music is a huge part of my everyday life, i voted DEAF. I could not imagine living life in total darkness. Makes me wonder how much we take our senses for granted.

Tough choice. And unpleasant to think about, to say the least. I would kill myself if I lost my sight.

Hmmm...this is a difficult choice indeed...
But if I had to choose between being blind or being deaf...
I would rather be deaf...by the following reasons:
I have been fortunate to listen and to enjoy the many and different types of sounds and music this world has to offer. Music is a large part of my life. It saddens me that if one day I lost my hearing, I would not only be able to listen to these sounds and music I love and enjoy, but to also miss out on the newer ones. However, I would try to cherish and recall my prior musical experiences from the mind (does that make any sense?).
I have seen many beautiful sights, places and faces (esp. my family and friends) in my life. But if one day I lost my sight, I would not be satisifed in knowing that I will never get the opportunity to see these things again. Nor will I be satisfied in knowing that I will not be able to witness the future experiences that I think are important.
That's my take on the question. And for each person, their choice will be different based on the things that are important to them. To those who said they would rather be dead...I guess I can see why they would rather be. The way in which one experiences life in general is obviously different among each individual. So for some, to go through life without sight or hearing, would not be living at all.
But just some food for thought...
Being blind or deaf (or losing one of the other senses) can be both a blessing and curse. The blessings of being blind or deaf could be the ones many of you mentioned (i.e. being non-judgmental of others based on looks, improving the other senses one still has). There are some individuals who are blind and deaf, and are capable of experiencing life to the best of their abilities (I admire these people).
Anyways...enough with the babble...btw thanks for asking this question, Kelly...an good eye-opener for some of us...at least for me...haha
Sorry Kel, I don't think there's any way I could choose. I'd deal with it when it happens. After having all of my senses I can not imagine living without any other them. I think I would go crazy. Watching It's All Gone Pete Tong really freaked me out - thus the reason why I always wear ear plugs when going to the bars now. In addition, my eyes are already pretty terrible. I'm not blind...but they're pretty bad and it really sucks!

As far as hearing music goes, i think people with hearing disabilities are able to sense the bass. My uni has a huge deaf school and I had to live a few months next to deaf people. Couple of times they left messages on my door with frikin tooth paste saying "Turn of your damn music" |
I would rather be deaf.
Deaf for me...
I'd rather be able to look at all the beautiful women, then listen to music.
Sorry!
Plus, I can make a beat in my head, so it wouldn't be to bad. I can make my own music! (assuming I wasn't born deaf).
I'm a visually-inclined person, so I'd be sooo fucked without my eyesight. I can live without the music, but I think I'd kill myself if I wasn't able to see.
Try spending an hour with your eyes closed (not sleeping of course), and an hour with your ears plugged in, and see which hour is tougher).

Deaf. It isn't that bad.*
*- as bad as being blind.
the both would suck i'm a lil deaf and a lil blind and it don't make life easy so to be with out either or both would just be terrible
p.s this is a really depressing poll kelly
Deaf, and heres why... If I was not able to drive anymore my my life would break down around me... I have a tendancy to just get in my car and drive when im troubled... and dont stop til whatevers bothering me has stopped... Secondly, Id rather be deaf than blind because of beauty... This world is so beautiful... and although i am completely colourblind, so i dont see things quite the way you all do... I dont think i would want to live without being able to see: the steam rising off of the river at my cottage on a fall evening just at dusk... the complete beauty and absolute serenity of a sunken ocean liner in the clear water of the caribbean... watching people laugh (this is one of my favourite things to do... it's almost impossible not to feel good) and of course... the beauty of the female form...
I wanna say "deaf" bc I honestly cant fathom living my life w/o being able to see.
But then I think that I'd never again be able to hear real, external music. Never hear "fresh" "new" trance/techno/house sounds.
All that I would have is the concept and impressive/idea of prior sounds I was familar with.
That is almost as hard to imagine.
i voted that i would rather be deaf. because when you are deaf and you like tunes, you can still feel the tunes.

As much as I love music, life would be too hard if I was blind.
Sight > music

Hence, sight > hearing
