Hmmm...

My advice along with the others is to also look into finding a broker that can give you the "best deal" (though it'll be way more expenisive than regular car insurance) for your special risk. The quotes that are given to are not only based on your driving record, but your age group, your driving class (i.e. G license), the area in which you live in, and your vehicle. Will you be the principal driver of this vehicle?

Besides the other insurance companies mentioned...did you look at Aviva Canada Inc.? (www.avivacanada.com) It's the parent company of other insurance companies under that name, particularly Pilot Ins. Co. (www.pilot.ca), which is an insurance company that deals only with brokers.

Also I never understood why people buy new cars for school.

It's going to get the shit kicked out of it in the parking lot, I guarantee it. A lease + dings and dents and scratches = more money to fix so they don't rape your asshole in 48 months when you return it.

Don't think I saw this advice anywhere....

SLOW DOWN!

MTO demerit points stay on your record 2 years after offence date

Insurance has access to your offences 3 years after conviction date

My insurance company wanted to write off my dad's Tracker after I did $7200 worth of damage to it. We finally convinced them to eat shit and fix it.

Thank god I turn 25 next year...

Just a quick aside.... Pilot has amongst the most strict underwriting requirements in Ontario. If you are even close to an elevated risk you have no chance of being insured with them. Alpina (part of Zurich.... part of Allianz.... part of ING) is about the only one that is more strict (to my knowledge).

Truesay...

When me and my sis were trying to find a car, we were happy to settle for a used one for school (we were looking for second hand imported cars). Hmmm, but the 'rents were pressuring us to buy a new domestic car (I know...a bad decision already b/c as most of us know, they're pretty crap...) with the rationale that one has used it, blah, blah. My mom who does auto underwriting told us that insurance for most domestic vehicle are cheaper vs. imported ones, so at the end we got suckered into buying a new Sunfire (a tin-can I tell you!).

Anyway...you do run the risk of getting dents...so unless you really need the car in the first place (i.e. it's more convenient to drive to school than busing it), then don't buy one...and if you need it for school...don't go all out... b/c at some point...you'll start seeing the dents...

True...Pilot started getting really strict recently...they're going by the "Aviva" way now...haha

Hmmm...but it really depends on the broker and the underwriter... muahaha...

It was just a suggestion though...

A little off topic, but does getting a ticket for no front license plate effect your insurance? (PC insurance)

Thanks.

I was wondering that myself. I don't believe it does as it is not a violation indicative of your being an increased risk. That said I do not know for sure.

Hmm...should i call them to find out? Or is that a stupid thing to do? You never know with these insurance companies.

Thanks.

Hmmm...it could if this isn't your first traffic violation, and again depends on PC's rules...you should probably call them...

Or you'll find out when you get your renewal

Don't call! The only way your insurer will know about it is if they run an "Auto Plus" search or request a copy of your driver abstract from the MTO. Despite what insurer's want you to believe they do not do this every time the policy renews as a $30 dollar search on every policy would cost too much money every year. Now, if you go calling them and asking then they may very well do a search to see why it is you would ask such a question.

Since PC is a direct writer I would recommend that if you must know you call an independent broker and ask.

BTW, someone mentioned Aviva earlier.... PC Insurance is also underwriten by Aviva Canada.

i dont know moral, by insurance company logic, no front liscence plate could be considered high risk......

my mom is the worst driver i have ever seen, she cant navigate, cant move with the flow of trafic, performs panic manouvers all the time and narrowly escapes accidents on a weekly basis and she is considered a perfect record.......

Well I think you can make general inquiries, though...

I don't think it will be necessary for underwriters to be pulling up an autoplus unless they are in the process of renewing the policy or underwriting new business...

As for the brokers...they could give you an answer...but again, different insurance companies have different rules...

Okay, try calling...if they ask for your policy number then hang up...hmmm...try calling other direct insurance companies (Aviva has other insurance companies like Scottish & York, OIS, etc.), if not then the brokers...

Remember, I am trained in insurance company logic!

If your mom hasn't had an at fault accident or conviction then she has not proven herself to be a risk. Insurance companies can only act on things they can prove.... part of our fudiciary responsibility and the principle of utmost good faith.

Ontario Insurance Service is a broker.... also owned by Aviva.

Aviva owns the following insurers.... General Accident, Canadian General, Traders General, GAN, Scottish and York, Elite, Pilot, Ontario Teachers Insurance Plan (I think that's it). They underwrite PC Insurance. Aviva is owned in whole by Norwich Union.

Most of the big insurers are owned by other big insurers. ING owns Halifax, Dominion of Canada, Allianz, Zurich (commercial lines), Belair Direct, Nordic, Royal & Sun Alliance and underwrites Meloch Monnex which underwrites TD Insurance.

Economical owns Economical Mutual, Waterloo Insurance, Perth Insurance, Federation, and Missisquoi.

Fairfax Financial owns Northbridge which owns Lombard Canada, Trafalger, Commenwelth, Federated, and Markel.

I'm sure I've forgotten some and Chemy will probably add to this later.

No.

A couple years back I got 2 tickets one night. One was for lacking any sort of emission controls on my car and one was for not having the proper insurance slip. The nice cop (who could have towed my sorry ass but thankfully didn't) assured me that since these were not moving violations, my insurance would not be affected.

And it wasnt.

That depends on how many policies you can promise the insurer per year. If you can make an identifiable group of 500 or more people that would all sign up I could get someone to negotiate a group rate for you.
