The whole "louder is better" thing works in the clubs (where it should).

If you want a good example of good sonic variation, listen to some Nine Inch Nails.

Club music was perfect in the mid 90's... Oh thats right you were there.....

It depends on the style of music. If you're mastering a classical piece, obviously you're not gonna suck the dynamics out of it since that's a style of music that relies on dynamics for tension. However with today's commercial (or mainstream) music, dynamics aren't really an essential part of the song(s). If you're listening to a hip-hop or dance tune... do you really need to hear the vocal fluctuate in volume? Not really. Maybe in blues or country. As long as the song isn't distoringly too loud (which I haven't heard yet), I'm all good.

Obviously you are a very commercial man saying dynamics aren't an essential part of mainstream music.

Let's be cookie cutters eh?

Simple question,

When was the last time someone heard a track and thought 'that's too loud - there's just no dynamics in that'?

If you were to hear a track and think it's too loud (no fucking chance) then just don't buy it.

Its really not that bad. I don't get what the complaining is all about. The last album I heard that was brickwalled to fuck was Oasis - Definitely Maybe and that record sounded awesome. When you think about it, brickwalling that record was appropriate because thats what Oasis were all about at that time - turning all the gain EQ pots to 10 and smashing out chords at ungodly volumes.

Synchronicity: Justin Timberlake - sexy back (or whatever it's called )

derivative: Well as always with music (and sound in general) it's a matter of taste. I personally can't stand when music is ruined because of people that really doesn't know (or care for that matter) jack shit about anything else except money.
For me it's also about being able to listen to music in sessions longer than 5 minutes without getting an "ear bleed" so to speak.

Haha, anything by timberlake is too loud.

can I blame timberlake for all the bad music, all the brickwalled tracks today and everything else that is evil?

I took the liberty of "previewing" the leaked unmastered Gnarls Barkley album before it was released. Loved it, then bought the album when it was in the shops. Compared to the leak, the CD was shit, obviously overdone and had audible clipping as well as no dynamics...exactly what's been discussed in this whole thread.
You can't just not buy a CD like that because you don't know what it will sound like (I know you can use preview stations, but they have low quality headphones and you have to compete with Paris Hilton over the shop's PA system).
