It isn't just about mixing, Jay. It's about P-E-R-F-O-R-M-I-N-G! I can stay at home and listen to Armin mix, what makes me spend 50 bucks to see him?

HIS PERFORMANCE!!!!

A good DJ is a DJ who can

a) Mix well.
b) Produce quality tracks.
c) Work a crowd.

If you can't work a crowd, GO HOME! I don't give a shit if you're God's gift to the mixing board, if you can't give a crowd a performance then why am I paying to see you live?

While DJs are entertainers, the way they entertain I think is 99% to do with content, IE: Technical ability+track selection+innovation.

If a DJ is visibly having a good time cause he's rocking the joint, its a plus... But there is no way Armin is THAT into all of his sets, seeing as how they're all the exact same.

Also Armin doesnt deserve to win, he is popular but not the best.

The best DJ of 2006 is (if I HAD to make a decision, as retartedly unfounded as it is) for me is probably Sasha as usual.

Now if someone says "OMG SASHA HASNT EVEN RELEASED AN ALBUM IN 2006 YOU NOOBCASE"

Ill kindly explain that its a vote for the best DJ, not producer, and the fact that Sasha is consistantly rocking in every liveset I listen to of his, I choose him, aswell as the fact its only his 2nd year into DJing digital and he's mastering it and pumping the megamix THOROUGHLY

Layo & Buschwacka! are mega badass too, and many others.

Posted by Marcus007 on Sep-08-2006 15:52:

Sasha?

I love him and all but what the fuck has he done this year that Armin hasn't?

Why? Because he's embracing digital technology?

** WARNING: MARCUS LOVES SASHA AND WANTS TO HAVE HIS CHILDREN **

you guys remember the night of Gabriel & Dresden ???

Gabriel was by himself having a very very VERY good time...

but was probably one of the worst set ever

BUT he was working the crowd

i remember that night

Yea...I remember felix: his mixing sucked but his track selection was good and he def worked the crowd.

That seems to be what makes a dj more popular, and I think that is because the majority of the crowd might not be able to appreciate mixing skills the way most of us can.

The noobs in the crowd go nuts over tracks they recognize and fist pumping before they go nuts over how well the dj mixes one track into another
Only us ta's, look at one another with that dirty look on our face when a perfect, sik mix happens

time for a house dj to win, because mixing trance is easier than mixing kool aid.

mixing trance or house or techno or kool aid... its all the same.
once you know the technique, you can mix whatever you want.

and yes, Armin claps better than ferry and stands on decks with superior balance. sadly its true

Posted by Oneeleven on Sep-08-2006 17:23:

A few years ago when the hate started up for Tiesticle, Armin was okay, he wasn't too popular. Popularity breeds contempt with EDM fans me thinks!

Posted by Marcus007 on Sep-08-2006 18:09:

I'm not saying a good DJ *only* works the crowd... I'm saying a good DJ works the crowd AND mixes good music...

What the fuck is this shit about Armin not mixing well? Are you kidding me?

Posted by Alex on Sep-08-2006 18:52:

What has Sasha done that Armin hasnt, well...

For one Sasha isnt a whore to his own label, and believe it or not, he plays 80% little known tracks and live re-edits almost all of them into a set that is mixed so perfectly that it sounds like a track that's 3 hours long.

Posted by Marcus007 on Sep-08-2006 18:58:

Explaining how being a whore to your own label is a BAD thing? It's your own fucking label!

----------------------

Sasha plays unknown tracks and redits while he spins?

That's why he deserves number one?

...

I love Sasha guys, I honestly do. I just don't see how using digital technology should be a carte blance for number one on the list...

Posted by Alex on Sep-08-2006 19:11:

It shouldnt.

But the fact that he completely scrapped all that made him the incredible DJ he was, changed his entire set-up AND IS STILL AN INCREDIBLE DJ WITH EVEN MORE GROWING POTENTIAL NOW.

And he doesnt just play re-edits, he is the one re-editing all of them live... Aswell as finding a way to mix so perfectly that to an outside listener it could just sound like a 3 hour long track. No other DJ has the mixing know-how to do this, not even Zabiela, albeit Zabiela is using more standard equipment.

Posted by Marcus007 on Sep-08-2006 21:52:

Do you know why he mixes so beautifully and seamlessly?

BECAUSE A COMPUTER BEATMATCHES FOR HIM!!!

Of course I'll make a three hour set seem like a whole song if I can use a computer to beatmatch the songs down to a MICRO-TEMPO...

I love Sasha... he's in my top 5... but I don't think he deserves it anymore than Armin...

RAWFUL

Sorry bro, you're way off on this one.

Beatmatching is important but that isnt what defines a mix and isnt what makes it sound like a perfect track. Its his ability to drop a track, choose a track, and edit a track to his liking and do it all on the fly.

If you're a real Sasha fan you'd have already watched his interview about Ableton and the guy interviewing him asks him if beatmatching takes the challenge out of djing and see what Sasha (AKA: THE MAN) has to say about it.

Come to Julius' tonight and we'll stick you infront of Ableton and see if you can sound as good as Sasha with your micro-tempo beatmatching

Posted by RoOmIE on Sep-08-2006 22:06:

link or stfu

Posted by Alex on Sep-08-2006 22:08:

I'm not much of a politician, but...

It's all about dance music.

The methodolgy behind a mix should always remain void; It doesnt' matter if he uses vinyl, cdjs, ableton, a shitty tape player; Or if he's got blond hair and blue eyes; Or if he belongs to this or that label.

What actually matters, is the actually dance music he plays and how we react to it. Ultimately, its what you make out of it, and when. What kind of message does a dj give out to his audience? How can you position him amongst others?

ps; Re-editing tracks that you'll play out is a fucken "a" trait, its a compatibility issue with tracks amongst others. Ableton does wonders when it comes to wave editing, so imagine the possibilities. You can't make it big using ableton just simply because it does the beatmatching for you, lol, if that was the case we'll have a million sasha-wannabes giggin. But never forget, the true pioneer behind ableton will always be Richie.

Moe is my new vote for #1, always brings sense to these arguments

What exactly are we arguing Alex?

We both love Sasha. We both love dance music. PLUR!

Let's hug and make up.
