dude they were probably hammering some form of "party" music, but dance music chronology goes back well before 1997...

(ibiza has been a party island since the Spanish Armada days, probably before then even)

1996
Aside: 1996 was the year that put trance on the map, bringing it out of the underground and into the mainstream. The songs below could be heard everywhere from Pacha, to Privilege to Space. And who could ever forget songs like Insomnia and Children - songs which have probably had a bigger impact on the current day trance movement than any others. I still remember going completely wild upon hearing Insomnia in Privilege, and crying after hearing Children for the first time.

Faithless 'Insomnia'
Still one of the greatest trance songs ever made

Robert Miles 'Children'
Ditto

BBE 'Seven Days and 1 Week'
fantastic melody and very fat bass

Tori Amos 'Professional Widow'
Armand Van Helden mix which tore up discos everywhere. Great bass line!

Hysteric Ego 'Want Love'
Very big house hit playing to the popularity of speed garage at that time

1997 to follow shortly...

Posted by jon jon on Sep-12-2006 14:35:

Rachel, I was agreeing with you?

Posted by English Rachel on Sep-12-2006 14:39:

You said 'kill me', so i did

I know you were agreeing with me, silly! Don't start with your 'that hand isn't funny, I'm not drunk' attitude

I know all the words to these...

1995
Aside: For us, 1995 was the year that coined the phrase Ibiza Anthems. I remember coming home after the summer of 1995 and the DJ mix album had simply taken off. The best Anthems here, the best anthems there...Brandon Block, Seb Fontaine, Judge Jules - the same names as we see on every album cover these days ;-)

More importantly it gave you something to listen to and dream about as those cold winter nights quickly dispelled any thought of summer, cocktails and dancing on an Ibiza beach. And I think Anthems is exactly the right word for these tunes below. Beautiful melodies, haunting trance - these are timeless classics you can hear again and again. Probably the biggest difference to the music heard now is the lack of bass. (Although do enjoy the fattest of basses on De'Lacy's Hideaway, from deep prog remixing specialists Deep Dish - 6 years ago!)

Everything but the Girl 'Missing'
This Todd Terry remix is a beautiful tune which graced every club in Ibiza!

Jamiroquai 'Space Cowboy'
Wonderful clubbed up remix, perfect for those blissful sunday mid-afternoons on the terrace

Josh Wink 'Higher State of Consciousness'
Absolutely wicked - this song brought on fullscale madness everywhere they played it

De'Lacy 'Hideaway'
Beautifully sexy house remix from an as then unknown American remixing duo - Deep Dish (eh?)

OT Quartet 'Hold that Sucker down'
Don't know about you lot, but this has sunrise at Privilege written all over it - what a tune.

Mori Kante 'Yeke Yeke'
Wonderfully haunting psychedelic trance tune played all over (often dusted off and brought out by discerning DJs today too).

Children was the first trance track I ever heard, and it made me fall in love with edm.
Insomnia is definitely up there too. I haven't heard either of these tracks in the longest time.

even in the ancient Greek & Roman times it was known as a chillin' place for the aristocrats and philosphers. i wonder what tunes they had then.

HOLY SH*T I would love to have been there. I can remember hearing these tunes at a "rave" and everyone just got standing there silent right before they would go nuts.

I am not a fan of the trance tunes these days, but man what I would do to go to a party that played these old gems.

Indeed! He closes @ Amnesia for a reason!

You can stay where I stayed this summer:

Hotel Costa Sur, Ctra. de port des torrent, Bahia de San Antonio
[email protected]

we got a good deal, 20 euro a night and the hotel was great, two pools, basically a nice resort kind of a place. since you are not really gonna be in a hotel all that often, all you really need is a bed with cleaning service that is close to the town (to buy groceries ect.) and this place is at San Antonio bay (about 5 mins by boat).

I think Andrea has already answered most of the questions you have but feel free to ask me anything and I would help out to my best knowledge!

Oh and see ya there next summer

Hahha....screw that. Cale wouldn't even being going on this trip if it weren't for me. He's merely tagging along. This was my present to myself once I finished my undergrad.

Also...you all say that August is the most expensive month. I would LIKE to go at another time, but it doesn't look like we have much of a choice. We're going to Holland for 2 months first, and renting an apartment. Generally they start the first of the month...We would be going June 1st. I finish school at the END of April and there's no way I could be prepared to be there May 1st. So we're renting in Holland June and July and then to Ibiza. I want to do Holland first b/c I want to go to Sensation, Dance Valley....and also b/c I've always wanted to go to Holland first...if I go to Ibiza first, I won't even want to go to Holland. Sensation White is the party I've always wanted to go to first over seas.

Anyway...pretty much this "August is the most expensive" stuff is starting to freak me out. I'm afraid I won't be able to afford it.

Spitty I know you want us to stay longer...I would love to...but I'm just afraid money wise since we WILL be going in August.

Also, we'd be flying from Toronto (or Detroit) to Holland, Holland to Ibiza, and then Ibiza back home...can any one take a stab at how much they think that would cost? A lot of people are saying over a thousand both ways for each...so would it end up costing me almost $3000 total in flights?

EDIT:

People are saying to book flights and shit early...how early is early? Like we haven't even booked our flights to Holland yet! We were going to do that in January. I don't think we should book our flights to Ibiza before we book them to Holland b/c they're usually non-refundable aren't they?

Also what do you guys do for money? Carry cash on you all the time? Visa? Travellers checks? OMG I don't know!! I've never been off the continent.

Book early:

Toronto - AMS should be about 800-1100 (round trip). Once again price varies depending on when you buy them.
AMS-London: Not too sure, but should not be over $200
London-Ibiza: as cheap as 200 bucks, but people have got it for much cheaper.
These are all round trip prices (and are just rough estimates).

I would suggest you pick some dates and price them online.

I will see your dutch ass in holland Cale along with ur funny lookin gf hahahahahaha and in ibiza and if anyone happens to be in Mykonos Ali and i are also hittin that up after Ibiza

^^I feel you Lisa!! I am planning on going to Ibiza for 2 weeks next summer and it is totally making me anxious!!

PS: Lisa, PM Lunasea from NYTA (you can tell you I told you so)...She always has TONS of advice on IBIZA in the "NYTA-spazz-out ibiza-trip-planning-thread." She like, knows everything there is, she practically lives there every summer!

Ok, with low cost airlines, like Easyjet or Ryanair or BMI Baby, there are a number of allotted seats that are cheap if you book early - the price goes up nearer the time as businesses are willing to pay... Dead easy to find online.

KLM to Amsterdam, for sure! Cheap and good planes.

Money? Charge your credit card up wich cash (so you are in credit with them) and withdraw from cash machines, by far the best rate and you can take as much out as you need - remember, UK is not on the Euro.

again, you can do it much cheaper. some nights i'd do the same thing with as other people, but they'd spend 10 times what i was. just do it smart and it will be easily done. plus if u stretch it out, you won't party every night...and the sunset/beach don't cost u money (neither do the preparties, bora bora etc.) booze is cheap (when bought before) so is other shit

because you are going so early in the season, your Toronto to Adam flights could be decently cheap. If i were you, I'd fly from TO to London (get return flights)..then get London to Adam..adam to ibiza..ibiza to london. BOOK EARLY AS POSSIBLE (january will be fine) and book TO to London first, as it will be the main costing one. Try zoom for TO to london, easy jet for inner-europe, vueling is a great company for europe (not uk)..i flew from adam to ibiza for under 60 euros

never had a problem with bank cards in spain. not sure for other places. maybe set up on your account that if need be, u can transfer your money into cales account or vice versa, incase one of u loses your cards. give your mom access to your account so she can wire you money if shit goes really bad (both of u lose your cards). don't stress about that... and don't both with travellers checks. not a lot of places use them.
