If you write your papers like I did, you'll strongly present both sides of the argument. Definitely stick with gender roles.

The male figure is seen as the provider. The woman he provides for is young enough to be his daughter. She usurps him and almost bankrupts the once-rich bastard, but he should've freaking known in the first place not to fucking marry her!

Wait, glaring contradiction...oh, you know what I mean. Why does the shit happen? It seems ridiculous that BOTH parties agree to such a materialistic life! Like, they almost accept it. Seems sick enough to write about; at least it's interesting.

If it's a sociology paper then there shouldn't be "sides of the argument". But then again if it's an intro class they probably won't care.
