Sorry for bringing this to your attention. Perhaps my view was perceived as more extreme than I actually felt about this. Apparently you would have had to be there, and be in my shoes, to see what I saw. Nevertheless, the fact is that they entered into a competition which was designed to award university students with an award for a company that they started within the past year. I found it surprising to learn that they had been around since 2003, and the person whom won the competition on behalf of the company was not a founding member, but management.

The story about this competition was written up in the Vancouver Sun business section today (Feb 1). Run by the Federal Development Bank.

Our federal tax money hard at work?

I also got the impression from the writeup that the competition was for newly created businesses, and Play It Tonight has been running for a few years.

The prize money is financed by sponsors. The BDC helps by supplying sponsorship to some extent (not all), judges, and a possible loan option (not guaranteed). The BDC's mandate is to further Canadian small business. I've heard from a lot of high powered business people that they are pretty much useless (to some extent).

Do you have any proof or are you just trying to be a dick?

Certainly the Play It Tonight person(s) acted unethically when they set up multiple message board IDs to try to pump up their sales. Or do you think that's cool?

Since they acted unethically at that time and never apologized about that on any message boards, it is reasonable to conclude they might try to use questionable methods again.

For that reason, and others, I will never buy any tracks from them. OK, never say never. But they really need to smarten up.

So doing something deemed unethical by you, then appologizing makes it all good again? I think by getting banned that would serve as a reminder not to do such acts again.

No proof, but I was there myself. I do know that there were tickets for 100 delegates, plus about 10 organizers/volunteers, 4 judges, 10-15 Entrepreneurs (non-students). This totals 124-129. Even if you do an allowance for perhaps 10 family/friends per team (which was certainly not the case, probably more like 2-3), you hit a max of 229.

I did not say that an apology makes it all good again. But clearly it is worse if someone tries to fool people like this and then they do not admit to it or apologize. An apology kind of means they admit they have done wrong and won't do it again. But if they just walk away and don't say anything then you have to wonder what other stunts they might pull.

About the competition, I wonder if the judges knew that Play It Tonight was operating for a long time, 3 or 4 years under previous management, as pretty much the same old business. It's like awarding an innovation prize to someone because they bought a furniture store and upgraded the sign and put a few more items in the store, but it's really just the same store as before..

I'm not sure what the sequence of events were but it seems like they were banned without a chance (if they were going to apologize) to do such an act. Weather or not they could sign up a new account, apologize and have Swamper be ok with it, would be another question altogether.

Considering how big of a competition this is and that the website clearly lists the fact that site was created in 2003, you would think the committee selecting the winners would maybe look at their website and eventually come across the sites background? If not, then this would seem to me like an inadequetly executed competition, wouldn't you agree?

How an individual could win this competition without their submitted business not being new makes me think that maybe they waived this since Sean just joined the business.

None, but you do seem bent out of shape that we're having a discussion.....
I ask you, is it that hard to ignore a thread these days? Don't like the topic or discussion, leave it alone and go away
