Hey guys, i have been djing in bars for about 6 months... i have 3 gigs a week that each pay 100 a night (wed, fri, and sat). i mean that comes out to be more than 15,000 a year (not bad for a side job/hobby). one club occasionaly has me in and they pay 400 a night. I would make a little more on wednesdays if i had my own speakers/amps, but i use another dj's (the big dog in town). he makes 250 a night during week days and 800 a night on weekends. i work for a cheep ass on fridays and saturdays and he has a sound system in his bar that i just plug my tt's into. anyway, i was planning on getting my own speakers/amps eventually and going around to the bars to see if i could get two more nights a week so i'll have 5 nights every week. i was wondering how much to ask for (flat fee, % of the door, etc..).

how much do you guys make when you dj (4 hour set)and please let me know the city you're from (the cost of living here is very low so im sure id make more in a big city). i'm from altoona, pa

thanks
bisco

Not really anyones business if I get paid or not. I'll pass your details on to the tax man though!

There's a lot of factors involved like Location, Style, DJ Following, venue, etc.

For me, a typical set would run anywhere from $100 (small venue) to $350 (large venue). If you provide your own equipment, you should be able to charge more. Easily $100 more. But then again, keep in mind the city you're at.

Posted by robtronik on Oct-10-2006 19:07:

yep, right in there with woody. I don't believe I've ever made more than $350 in one night.

But I'll play for nothing if the cause/party is right. I just want to get the music out there and push DJing. I love it. It is a disease I think.

+1

a number of factors come into play when looking at pay

location (local, continental, international)
venue and size of gig
promoter
tour (can they book you for multiple nights in neighboring citites)
travel costs

each gig should be handled on a case by case basis

some promoters just can't afford to pay you, they'll usually hook you up with free drinks, in which case you're probably playing to a half full basement club anyway

start with a base fee (but be flexable) and add on charges from there (like if you have to travel, bring your own gear, etc.)

and contracts, especially if you have to travel

don't get burned because you were too dumb to cover your own ass

whoah, asia is the place to be i think

in jakarta a middle-of-the-road local DJ gets at least USD300 for a 2-3 hour set. more renowned locals more like USD500-700, the really decent locals USD1,000 and upward. foreign residents (none of whom are well-known anywhere but here) especially westerners take home an extremely good packet every month.

clubs here are run by bi---g backers and have plenty of money to splash out on. the current local crop of DJs are mostly comparable to locals in western countries..

i don't gig yet, hoping to start in a month or 2

Hiphop and House? Wow you are completely off.
He usually plays tech and some more electro stuff these days.

^^ i don't know if we're talking about the same person, tho he does look similar.

i *think* the guy's name is justin, he's been a resident at a jakarta club for a few months now.

Posted by ZeJayMan on Oct-12-2006 12:27:

I get paid anything from 100 dollars to 175 dollars, plus travel costs for myself and my equipment.

Plus some uncle herby, and some free drinks. Cha Chingg...

If you're djing for the money and not for the love of music than you've got it all wrong. Djing, like making music, is building up something to call your own. If you're talented, no matter who you are or where you're from, you'll probably be discovered. I dunno, it's really hard to know, but if you've got something serious to show people than it will eventually pay off.

No Effort is ever left unpaid....

yeah that makes sense... i didnt like hip hop at first, but i developed my own kinda style and i enjoy working the crowd and stuff. i'd still rather spin house tho...

BAH! I wish that was true...

Most of the DJs i've heard here in clubs are shit.

They only get in because they have connections. Nobody really seems to care about how much skill they actually have.

Posted by shuni on Oct-24-2006 07:13:

i play at partys with my own sound equipment and i charge 25$ per hour for a small setup and 35$ for the bigger one

Posted by idoru on Oct-24-2006 07:39:

$0.00

And it felt damn good.

Posted by Clovis on Oct-24-2006 09:18:

The way I look at it is, if I'm working, then I should be getting paid.

Posted by T-Soma on Oct-24-2006 09:42:

Its confusing how you always hear:
Don't do it for the money or else you won't make any.

That is why I am not doing it for the money.
...so I can make money!

Honestly though, if I had the chance to play infront of a crowd who loved my music and shared the energy I was trying to feel then I would do it for free.
If I have to play hip-hop and cheese that I dont personally enjoy then I want yo money biatch.
