barcelona and madrid are both well-stocked with absinthe/absenta -- we found mid-grade [e.g., deva70] alongside the high-content, "real" absenta [e.g., mata hari] in nearly every liquor store.

try the mid-grade if you want to get drunk, but it's a waste of money for tripping -- chances are you'll die from alcohol poisoning before you ever see the green fairy. the mid-grades i've tried are 70% alcohol and have an anise [licorice] flavour. most are sold in 750mL bottles.

having sampled both mid- and high-content, i can vouch for a distinct difference. high-content absentas still have a high alcohol percentage, but the thujone levels were great enough that we hallucinated from three generous shots of mata hari. as a very general guide, most "real" absinthe is sold in smaller bottles of 500mL and costs a bit more...

an excellent resource: www.feeverte.net

not with reall wormwood though.
Absinthe as a drink is making a big come back now, New Orleans even has a distillery now... however it's not the same as the stuff they used to make in the 17 and 1800's.
The hullucinagen wormwood is what makes it illegal... no wormwood and you can sell it in many more countries, ie spain. But with wormwood and there are few countries that allow for such a drink.

what are the negative effects of real absinthe?
long term-wise.

not sure about long-term. many artists' & writers' mental states, illnesses, and acts [such as Van Gogh cutting off his ear] have been blamed on excessive consumption of absinthe.

The Day on Fire by James Ramsey Ullman is fantastic and based on the life of Arthur Rimbaud, who ingested a LOT of it in his time, as did Van Gogh, Manet, Picasso, and Hemingway.

erowid's database is a good start...

best resource I've found. I love absinthe, it's not something I'd drink a bottle in a night of, but man oh man, it'll jumpstart a predrink or finish you off real well.

And BTW French Absinthe is the way to go, most Czech absinthe is shit and tastes like mouthwash.

Why don't you try it and whatever happens, happens?

me too. The legal limits the EU allows for Thujone (aka wormwood) are only 10mg to every KG of liqour. weak by old day standards. so while it may contain wormwood, it is generally regarded as not being able to mess you up the way it used to prior to its ban. This revial of it since the 1990's is a way to cash in on the name for the most part.

Iwas able to get my hands on 34mg/KG stuff. I was not able to order the 100mg bottle.

My uncle serves the real stuff when I visit 'the old country'. The real Czech stuff isn't sold outside the country, and there are no restriction on wormwood content. Have I seen the green fairy? Maybe I have, maybe not, I can't tell for sure... because once you're drunk on this stuff, you can't tell your armpit from your forehead. Even with the more concentrated stuff I had, you can't feel the effects of the hallucinogen, unless you drink it for several nights in a row, as like Nusty said, it is stored and kicks in when accumulated.

Hill's has a very low thujone content.... the stuff you get at the LCBO is nearly 0.

My last adventure on Absinthe didn't turn out too good!

I had a bad day at work and went out with a friend. Drank a half bottle of wine, and then headed up to a bar to have some Absinthe. I had four shots in less than 45 minutes then headed home. I was having a great time then it hit me about 45 mins after my last shot and I don't remember anything else about the night. My friend told me I was so sick and slept in the washroom all night. I was extremely sick the next day and couldn't hold anything down.

It's too bad, I did enjoy having 1-2 shots every now and then, but after the night I had above, I don't think I can ever go near it again.

NICE!

but I must say... I find you brave to drink it as a shot. I'm surprised you didn't puke or singed your throat. As a Czech I pour 2oz over a sugar cube or two through a holed spoon, flabee'd until the sugar caramelizes, then dropping in the glassputting it on fire, then adding water until the fire goes out.

There's a French restaurant just to the right of Montana's (in the clubbing district) that serves it this way. They call it Van Gogh's Ear on the menu.

i've always been curious about getting my hands on the real stuff. as yet, i have not! the first time i had it in oban, scotland, i thought i had burned a hole in my throat. then a few years later we brought some back from england, but it was really a waste as it doesn't taste good with anything (although i seem to recall us mixing it with something - maybe redbull LOL - that wasn't too revolting), and i'm not gonna do shots of something that tastes so horrific if it doesn't have any wormwood in it. and if what y'all are saying about having to drink it several nights in a row for it to do anything is true, then that seems like too much work for me.

Do it like the Czechs do, and you won't regret it.
