And why do some of you format so often? What are the benefits?

Go to buy.com. You can get 250 GBs for $100 on sale anymore. I have a 250 GB Iomega that I got for $125-150 6-12 months ago. Barosoap has a 300 GB Fantom that was less, I think.

I've heard good things about the Seagates and we've had no problem with either of ours. I've heard negatives about Western Digitals and the Lacie Porsche ones. Buy has a 300 GB Seagate for $130

buy.com had a 500gb iomega for 169 a few weeks ago; it's now back up to 225, i think.

to those planning on buying external drives, remember that its reliability is finite and at some point it will crap out on you.

i use two internal and two external hard drives and have learned the hard way about not backing up worthwhile stuff -- both music and work...

I used to have a mess load of shit...from EDM to rock to rap to etc. Then i realised i was nolonger enjoying the music but instaed downloading anything and everything to have some bullshit collection.

When i saw i was downoading all this shit and not even getting a chance to listen to it, only look at it and be like wow i have so much. pointles.

So i had my own little D-Day and just started deleting shit i did not care for in all genres.

Now, today, i have a collection i "enjoy"...a collection that i can look at ANY mp3 (liveset or single) and throw it on shuffle and not be bored...a collection where everything i click on i will love.

So basically quality over quanity is my point. If i download a set and i only like 50% of the tunes - it gets deleted. quality over quanity!

i hear ya. when i get a set like that, i split up the track i like and delete the set. saves a lot of space.

You could just buy the full track if that's the reason you're downloading sets.

250gb WD external - 119@newegg - link above

I've got a 60Gb drive full (5700 files - mixed singles and sets) and a 100Gb external that is about 70% full. Some on the external are repeats of those on my drive - backups of the good stuff... I went through that collect anything phase when I2Hub was operating... now I pretty much only DL live sets and occasionally buy a single I realy like.
I need to do something with all of it tho - don't know what I'd do if both drives crashed
