i think its importent to invest in a good set of headphones
i have the Sony MDR V700, which i love... although most ppl dont find them that good, i find them gr8 and i think they can really do the job

the Technics RP-1210DJ are also a gr8 set of headphones!!
so are the Sony MDR v6 (as i've heard), my 2 cents are, go get urself a decent pair of headphones!

Since you are in the UK, the Sennheiser HD280 Pro's would be a better choice for you...
