i'm sure swamper will be in here soon to give you the technical annalysis. in the meantime, they basically occur when you press that damned submit button more than once.

once you hit submit, information about your post is sent to the TA servers. after your post is sent, your browser waits for the TA servers to send back a response saying "ok we got your post, now go to this page." when the servers are busy it might take them a while to send that response, historical data shows with TA servers this can take up to several minutes. so people are left with two choices: sit and watch the animated icon at the top right or get frustrated and hit submit again, and again, and again. each time they hit submit the same post information is sent to the TA servers, which already got the information from the first two times (were just too busy to tell you) and this results in a double, triple, or more post

yeah, but the server will also tell you that u can't post with less than 20 seconds in between the posts

Pretty much.

Basically, if the database is too busy to process your new post/reply then you sit around waiting - it doesn't even know that your post is coming in so it can't really tell you to not click again (lol). The only way around this is to set up a javascript to change the button to deny you the possibility of double/triple posting. I think the new version of the forums does something like this anyways...

The other bad thing that can happen is you end up with a 'server not responding/page cannot be displayed' error - which would happen if your request can't be processed by the web server because it's too busy. Always copy your post to the clipboard anywhere you post online because you never know when that can happen and everything you typed is gone forever. (not so bad in firefox, common in IE)
