HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
So upon further reflection, this was definitely the best party I have been to in 2006 and probably even longer. It is so rare now to get a major techno headliner out to somewhere other than Guv or this is london - occasionally they happen at footwork but (in my mind) no one on the same level as Adam has ever played there.
There isn't a better space in the city to have a techno jam. I haven't been to 99 in quite some time but it was as I remembered it to be - bare bones, big sound, random people, etc. It was nicely decorated with candles and drapes (not too close together, thankfully).
I got there a bit late but was happy to see Jamie Kidd still playing when I arrived around 1. I had quite a few people remark how great Jamie's set was and it was an excellent lead in to Adam's set. A bit more on the funky, but still driving, techno side. This guy is definitely on the up and up and I hope (and expect) we'll see a lot more of this guy opening for DJs like Adam Beyer!
Adam came on around 2 and was playing harder than expected. I was really surprised. It was nice to hear some older tracks along with a lot of new material. I would really like to know where he's getting this music! I hope this is where techno is headed again...still driving, but deep and percussive. I would say he didn't go softer until about 5:30. He still maintained, for the most part, a groove to his set, never wandering off into really hard stuff for too long. Technically, there isn't too much to say about Adam, his mixing is always bang on and the transitions are smooth. Sure there was an off beat here and there but I don't know of a techno DJ who plays more seamlessly than Adam does.
The crowd was typical 99 crowd - ravers, drunks, creeps, weirdos - but I couldn't believe how many people from the techno scene Adam Beyer brought out that I wouldn't expect to see. It was definitely a rare show for toronto and I think a lot of people knew it.
The only downsides to the night were, as usual, the horrible bathrooms, the paint shit that comes off of the floor and on to your shoes and clothes, and them running out of water at 4:30. It got very hot in there - especially for those in costumes!
Nice to see all of the TAs out as always
Here are a few short clips of the night:

wow...awesome vids
It looked like Beyer was on top of his game that night...
for missing out on some techno

nice videos! i talked to one of the guys that basically filmed the whole thing and he said he would be posting his footage on google video so i look forward to seeing those hopefully in the near future!
Wow, this was an INSANELY good night.
Adam Beyer threw down four hours of pure madness. From the get-go, he started tearing shit up with his classic fast paced, funked up percussive techno. This is the kind of techno I fucking LOVE because, quite simply, it makes me go absolutely mental. The peak hour insanity around the 4:00 to 5:00 am mark had me twisting and turning my body and flailing my arms and legs in such weird helicopter-like ways that I feared I might become unglued and parts of me would just fly off around room. At one point, simply dancing was not enough I wanted to physically throw myself AT the music. It was that good. He was just pulling out track after track of dirty, filthy techno evil. Just when you thought it couldnt get any more demented, he upped the ante with yet another piece of electronic psychosis. Most of the stuff he was playing sounded new I only recognized a handful of tracks all night. If this is a sign that harder techno is coming back with a new gloss, then I sure do like the direction this is going.
I gotta say, after going to a number of parties in the last few months that have left me kinda "meh" about the whole EDM scene, my faith has been restored, and this kind of brilliant techno by a master of the craft is the SHIT.
Nothing is better for totally losing your shit on a dancefloor than techno. NOTHING.
9/10

hello friends
first we would like to thank everyone for coming out on friday. We did not expect that many people to come and and go nutz for beyer. The main room of sudbury was completely packed and the sound was just amazing. So many people where smiling and just going nutz dancing. It was a very special night and a great lauch for our Platform series.
We are sorry about running out of water at 4am but atleast you could still buy alcohol
Adam had a great time and is super excited about doing a drumcode event here in the future. He also loved the venue and wanted me to thank everyone for the great support he gets here in toronto and stated that this was one of his favorite north american gigs. On another note many people were unaware that this week was the last week of sudbury99's main room. The main room has been rented and will become and indoor golfing range in the next month as the lease starts Nov 1. In conclusion we are super happy that everyone had a great time and we had the priveledge of having one of techno's brightest stars close down 99 for good. see you all the future platform events that will be pushing the big techno names....
TECHNO FOREVER!!!!!
Congrats on a successful party!
That's be awesome to do a Drumcode event.. I think Minneapolis wants to do one as well

where are the Trentemoller reviews?
i thought he was playing at this venue last night??
Hopefully we will find another venue but probably not as underground as 99. Anyways we have also recorded the whole nights music and we will be posting the sets up shortly. Also a very good quality video will be released on youtube that has the hightlights of the night captured. Cheers

I've never been to such a good night where the sets were actually recorded!!!!
Some words and stuff...
If I hold out any longer, I may forget about my thoughts and experiences, so I must write a proper review now.
I had been hyping this event ever since I first heard the rumours about Adam Beyer playing in Toronto. I felt a little bit over-confident which led to some disappointment, but overall, it was a pretty good night.
Mmm red wine! Me and Jenners made our way to 99 Sudbury after a mini shitshow at her hotel room. After hiding in a closet and trying to scare her on more than one occasion, we figured it was time to get more sloshed. To my surprise, the taxi driver had no problems finding the place; no questions were asked. I found that quite strange... It was located in a good secluded area which was expected. We got in at about 12:30ish with no hassles; we weren't IDed and they didn't make an effort with the body searching...not that I'm complaining
. Staff was extremely friendly and courteous. As we walked into the big room, I had flashbacks from my experience at Wallace Studios. The space at 99 Sudbury was very similar...typical abandoned warehouse! It had a very underground feel, and I knew I was going to love partying there. The decorations were cool, especially the candlebras which made it look like some vampire's lair
. The crowd was older, sketchy but knew how to handle their 'enhancements', and really down to earth. In fact, I recognized alot of people from an earlier Wallace Studios party. Best vibe EVER! Tons of good dancers, which was refreshing and a bit intimidating, and smiles everywhere. Like I mentioned before, they had one green lazer that shot at a disco ball, reflecting the light into many little green squares. I had some fun trying to 'hold' them in my hand haha. Sound was a bit low and not clear enough to fully enjoy the tuneage, but it sufficed; the perfect spot was smack in the middle. I failed to mention that it was my first time...and for every firsts, there are also flaws. The cement flooring was wet, DIRTY, and very slippery. I actually took a wipeout at one point which was pretty embarassing, and as I got up I was covered in the filth...I was literally a dirty clown! lmao..which would have been even more emphasized if I had chosen to wear my costume. Thank god I didn't!
Heat was also an issue for me. I rarely get tired on regular occassions, but my body does not handle heat well, and I get tired very easily when I'm drenched with sweat. The place was a sauna because of how packed it was, but it got cooler after 4 am when it started to clear out...so it wasn't that bad. If it wasn't for these factors, I would have enjoyed the party so much more. I still managed to rock it out, hard, and harder, and even HARD. lol.
The music and set(s) are what really made my night. I caught about less than an hour of Jamie Kidd, but it took me really long to adjust to the vibe of the party and to sober up for me to notice what was going on and being played. Sadly, I have nothing to say about his set but my friends kept exclaiming how awesome it was.
Close to 2 am, Adam Beyer played a surprising set as many have mentioned before. He's my 3rd favourite deejay in the whole world, being a huge fan of his productions and remixers. On top of it all, it was my first time getting the privilege to check him out, and I was expecting a very minimalistic set with a few hard bangers here and there...but the actual outcome was reversed. I must say, I was a little bit disappointed because it wasn't what I expected, but for the most part, the set was unbelieveable! His mixing was a bit sloppy a few times, but not that noticeable. He delivered an earth shaking symphony of rock slides and explosions through the means of music. Lots of goodies! Hard banging techno with craters of softer filler tunes all around. I heard a few of his productions, including a bunch of older stuff and some new stuff. I thought this kind of techno was dying? Beyer totally proved that theory wrong! The whole room was on fire, feet kicking at the air, never hitting the ground. Everyone was going nuts, dancing like they were beating someone up...that someone was the floor! There was a sad little clown...I forget his name, and he had his little ice cream cone, but it was missing his favourite topping.. minimal *sniff* My buddy George (Fuertez) had just left, and he and I were both talking about how it would make our night....and he figured that Beyer would drop that after he left.. 10 minutes after George left, that little clown had a huge smile on his face! It was around 5 am, and Beyer switched it up a bit. Oh yes! YES! Fuck yes? YES!
I don't even have to say what it was...wait, I do! Minimal! He continued to play that until he ended at around 6 am. I was just getting started, and I couldn't stop grooving to the deeper beats. I was pleased, but it would have been awesome if he played for 2 more hours. I thought he was; Adam Beyer was smiling so much, which was probably because he had an awesome night. He knew he played a great set!
I was able to ID a few tunes but there weren't really any that stood out. Everything was just good.
Audion - Mouth To Mouth ...played by Jamie Kidd
Joris Voorn - Mpx309
Oliver Klein - Al Quadus
Alexi Delano - Echolocation
Adam Beyer - Stereotypes
Ch00ns! ^^
Adam Beyer's Set > The Party
I had a good time, and I loved 99 Sudbury. I was looking forward to the next night there with Trentemoller..and it was a much more clean and enjoyable night...but I'll leave that for my other review. Loved partying with my Clowns, who were almost in full force (the males at least). Also loved rocking it out with the fellow TAs who were there. You guys are hardcore! Never saw this much insanity on the dance floor from you guys <3. It's a shame this place is closing down, after I just decided I'd make it my 'basement' (since I already have a '2nd home', and a 'condo' lol.) I look forward to more parties from Platform though. Kudos to phawn and crew!
