I just purchased the Samsung LN-S3251D 32 in LCD with my employee discount at Best Buy for 1,071.00. The current sale price is 1,349.99 so I think it's a good deal. The picture quality is amazing. I actually went in to buy the 999.99 "manager's special" Bravia competitor, but seeing them in action side to side, the Samsung won me over for a little more money. Plus it's got 2 HDMI ports which is rare for tv's of this size. I wasn't willing to spend over 500 more for the 1080p 40 in. (Didn't need the size anyway). I'm completely satisfied and I highly recommend this model for the best of the 32 in LCD's out there.

It's cheaper at Circuit City.
Samsung 50" DLP HDTV (HL-S5087W)

SAM HLS5087W Price was: $2299.99
You save: -$500.00
You pay: $1799.99

tis good to see many flat screens now with the digital tuner built in, a set top box is just clunky, one extra bit of gear to turn on, house, cable etc. Even better now LG have put in hard drive recorders into their boxes, another bit of gear, cables etc you don't have to worry about.
better that way than hundreds of dollars more on intelligent remote controls

+1

I've got my HD antenna set up as a temporary fix but I'm getting the full HD box setup next week. HD in the tv is a great plus I agree.

Edit: True about those remotes but they ARE pretty baller when you see them in action. My friend has the top of the line Harmony and while I'd never spend that much on a remote, I can see the benefits to it.

Posted by tubby on Nov-30-2006 00:06:

i'd certainly look into those remotes. I think i have about 8 remote controls in my living room now. getting one that knows to watch a dvd it must turn on tv, set to the right channel, turn on dvd, set sound system up etc all in one command would be so convenient.

It even pops open the playstation cd tray...it's a thing of beauty!

Yep. Even with my discount it's still over 100 bucks for a remote.

Posted by jdat on Nov-30-2006 22:52:

Anyone have pictures of their setups?

One thing I find terrible is how the average install is done so poorly it makes one wonder why some people bother spending so much.

People with Hi-Def screens with their dvd players plugged in with rca connectors lol... what a waste!

Posted by miamitranceman on Dec-01-2006 03:08:

I agree. I just bought an LG upconverting DVD player and HDMI cable today. It is like night and day compared to yesterday when I was trying out movies off my ps2 (not even prog scan) and rca cables.

Posted by DjConfessions on Dec-01-2006 05:05:

people at work are always asking me: Are you allowed to lie an LCD/Plasma TV (still inside box) on its side for the ride home?
The salespersons are always telling me its ok for an LCD TV to lie on its side, but not a plasma, but I take everything they say as bullshit.

Posted by tubby on Dec-01-2006 05:40:

the delivery guys on my plasma said never lay it flat. When I reported buzzing from the power unit/fan the repairer laid it flat to change both and says that's how all units are worked on.
so I'm no help, I've only talked to two people about it and they gave conflicting advice. I must say it doens't seem to have suffered for being laid down flat

So I tried out FFXII on my new tv and it looks like crap. I'm reading online that component cables are a must for ps2 on an HD/high quality screen setup. Anyone here using this connection? I'll post tomorrow after I get them.

This is what you're making reference to right?

I would say it's probably worth the investement. Better color space than standard composite cables and also than s-video.

You'll also be able to play up to 480P with the ps2 if you get that cable.

This appears to be the highest quality option available for the ps2.

I don't own a ps2 but there's no reason why this shouldn't give you a much better picture.

i have my ps2 connected via S-Video and it looks alright, but yea, component all the way

+1. Hooked up the component cables...it's a completely different picture. I'd say for anyone with a high def set and ps2, it's a must.

Posted by tubby on Dec-02-2006 08:57:

not sure about ps quality, but our cable tv box was shipped with composite connections and the picture sucked. A few phone calls ad they delivered the box with component outputs, much better. Still nowhere near HD that we get on free tv, but much better than it was.

Composite is the lowest quality you could possibly get.
Component is much better but it is also nowhere near resolutions attainable by HD so I don't think it's reasonable of you to expect similar quality

To make the best use of your HD set with non-HD sources would be to use a component to HDMI scaler/converter.
This hasn't really existed up until now ( and the product hasn't even been released yet! )
Gefen Home Theater Scaler: 449US$
link

Yes it isn't cheap but that should make optimal usage of your HD set.
The issue with using an item which doesn't provide native resolutions to your HD set will force the set to operate at non native resolutions resulting in poor pixel distribution etc

With this box you're able to convert Component to HDMI at resolutions of up to 1080P which is sure to be native resolution capable for all current HD sets.

It's also a very cheap scaler that you'll be able to use with any hdmi source.

Well that seems useless.
You can go buy a decent DVD player with HDMI/Digital Audio output for cheaper than that convertor...

It's obvious that you don't seem to understand the importance of having a scaler for hdmi needs

It's not a cheap product but for what it is it's very cheap. Most scalers and switchers tend to be much pricier.

Buying an HDMI capable player doesn't mean it can output Full HD ( 1080P ).
There are only a handful of models of dvd players that are capable of doing. This will be something of the past pretty soon apparently as the manufacturers of players and HD sets are focusing for the new generation of products to include scalers.

As of right now the cheapest dvd player capable of 1080P upscaling costs around 150~160 US$ and the results with these are far from being the best yet as to reach such a price point there needs to be concessions made with the components used.

welcome to life out in the colonies. component is the best out cable tv offers right now, end of next year they'll start broadcasting in HD, right now their SD isn't that great either.
at least most sport is on free to air tv, so that is in decent quality.

True, but there there isn't any programming content out there worth worrying about 1080p either other than to stroke one's ego I suppose.
