I haven't seen the film so i can't vouch for it. I've just seen his work on the Ali G shows. All Cohen's character's rely to some extent on him convincing the interviewee that he is an idiot within the first few seconds or before the interview.

It's not just the fact that there is political content there, it's the method he uses. The brilliant thing about this satire is that he doesn't need to take the piss out of them, or state his opinion. He puts the people in a position where they take the piss out of themselves. A redneck making an idiot of himself is much funnier to me than a guy standing up and telling me why he thinks rednecks suck.

If youre gonna watch the movie, and just watch Borat, than yea, you missed the point. Its not about what Borat is doing, its about how people react to him.

Astro, i understand the beauty of the method, and i could appreciate it. I just don't appreciate his characters.

I guess this is were hes trying to come off as an idiot..i don't find it funny at all though. Dosen't he say similar phrases to everyone else?

Im sure the scenario he gets people into may be funny, but him just being there would keep me from enjoying it..i guess it's just me.

Its amazing that as soon as something goes mainstream or explodes, it doesn't take too long for someone to protest against it, and claim it to not be 'the next big thing'.
Thing is, no one ever claimed this to be any such thing. It does appeal to a wide demographic, and it is light-hearted humour. Besides that, what exactly don't you get about it? It's over-rated? By whom? What exactly ISN'T over-rated? It's not over-rated, it is merely popular.

This is the exact point I made mention to, youre too focused on Borat... the funny part of the whole thing is that he got the shit kicked out of him. Its not about how he interacts with society, its about how society interacts with him.

yeah but this thread is about Borat himself being lame, as well as his jokes. Like i said, im sure the scenarios might be funny, but the guy is just annoying. Anyone have a clip that they consider funny and wouldn't mind posting it?

Not really, he just finished up with all of England. Before the Ali G show he did Borat for another comedy show and he went all over England and Europe. I guess with Ali G's success over seas, he was alot more recognizable.

Ahh, I didn't know that. The only Borat I ever saw was on Ali G.

The thing at the church in the movie is 100 times funnier.

Oddly, after all my excitement for the film, I don't think I'm even going to bother seeing this movie until it's out on DVD. Borat was absolutely terrible on almost every talk show he appeared on to promote the film, and the immense overexposure has really, really doused my desire to see the film at all.

The sketches he did on the Ali G show were terrific - Why he chose to appear on all these talk shows where the humor of Borat simply (and obviously) doesn't work is beyond me...

Beyond that, I just don't think the character works in the least when you have someone like Conan or Jon Stewart who is so clearly "in" on the joke. It's the interviews and sketches he's done where people have no clue who he is or what he's going to do that are gold; That Conan interview in particular was painful to watch.

oh and i saw the movie before really knowing about the Ali G show. i don't watch that much TV...maybe one or 2 shows, so I hadn't heard of him. i thought the movie was the first time he came out with that.


so i was at a friend's on saturday and we were watching it...hilarious!! he was acting like this gay austrian reporter and he was interviewing football players. lmao

i was dying laughing.
