Theres also a slight flaw in Mikey's argument, I would write off all of Happy Hardcore as shit.

A lot of misconception about what minimal is and what its not.

From people who like and from people who hate it.

Keep in mind that minimal is not a genre itself, the concept of minimalism is what music tends to achieve in the "minimal" genre

Minimalism also exists in other forms of arts.

cant say minmal is really my cup of tea either. to tell you the truth I couldnt even name one track off the top of my head that i like in that genre.however my knowledge of that genre is somewhat limited...

does Booka Shade count as minimal.. I like Booka Shade. Its kinda blippy and spaced out sounding. More proggy than anything I rekon.

Posted by julien2 on Nov-15-2006 23:20:

if you want to basically narrow minimal as genre use these criterias

1- Drum oriented

2- Melodies created of drum patterns

3- Short samples

4- Snares are switched to samples of voice, music, clicks, beeps, etc.

5- 99% no synths

HOWEVER, keep in mind that minimalism is a concept. This is why we know see the emergence of genres such as minimal-trance (neo-trance or nu-trance) and microhouse/ketamine house

Ok, but minimal it's not only what holden played in his last compilation. Minimal is not only trentemoller and certainly it's not new as Holden stated in one of his interviews.(Minimal as progressive with plug-inS?!?WTF?Progressive???)

Hence how about some classic minimal techno...

Maurizio- "Track-1"

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF19-01-01-01.mp3

Maurizio- "track-2"

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF19-01-02-01.mp3

Basic Channel- "Loop"

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF129377-01-01-01.mp3

Basic Channel- "Q 1.2"

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF129377-01-01-09.mp3

Fluxion- "Lark" (best minimal producer ever!IMO ofcourse)

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF34502-01-01-01.mp3

Monolake- "remoteable"

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF85314-01-01-06.mp3

How about some classic "microhouse"/"click-house"/"glitch-techno". They now call this "minimal" as well. Everything is fucking minimal now, minimal this, minimal that...but then, this genre was always a minimal sub-genre i guess...

Akufen- "Moon over Plateux"

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF96383-02-01-01.mp3

Akufen- "whore-house"

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF86605-01-02-01.mp3

Matthew Dear- "Another"

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF180713-02-02-01.mp3

Matthew Dear- "Juice"

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF180713-02-01-08.mp3

Pantytec- "Candy coated conspiracy"

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF95324-01-01-02.mp3

Peter Grummich- "Arcona"

http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF180713-02-01-07.mp3

And i bet that you haven't heard of "minimal" guys like Steve Reich, Philip Glass, John Cage, Terry Riley, John Adams...The TRUE minimal!!!Heh.

Dude I love Phil Glass

Posted by Lebezniatnikov on Nov-15-2006 23:43:

I never really got into minimal too heavily myself, but I don't understand how people can be really into something for awhile and then get completely tired of the entire genre. You obviously didn't like it very much to begin with. Either that, or you never really explored it.

My two kroner.

^^We already discussed that matter. YES, the original post in this thread came from an individual which has got his head deep inside his rectum.

This has now been accepted as a fact.

Thank you for sharing

I love Philip Glass too!!!"Koyaanisqatsi" right?A piece of art. The same goes for many of his works. My favorite minimal composer must be Steve Reich though. He has this energy expressed through dynamic intense pulsating patterns that characterise his compositions ("Reichisms")... the kind of atmosphere he sets is second to none...but yea philip glass is excellent as well i reckon!

I like Reich's stuff too, what I enjoy most from Glass are his piano works and film scores.

i know i am...

I know the cosistent producers/labels out there so I know what to listen out for and know what to skip passed and i find plenty decent tunes to keep me going.

I'm more sick of people labelling everything thats produced under 130bpm as minimal, most of it's bordeline prog, I think a lot of people are to quick to bash 'minimal' as a genre (which it isn't by the way), before they even know what it really is.

Posted by julien2 on Nov-16-2006 00:23:

bpm has nothing to do with minimalism.

if you read half carefully you'll see that's exactly the point i'm making..

Minimal to me is easy to listen to. It's more of a background music!

If you listen to it as background music you're probably not hearing what makes minimal so good...

Posted by Dj_Skez on Nov-16-2006 06:51:

The other TA members are right, you can't just brush off a whole EDM genre/sub-genre just because you don't like a lot of the productions. Even though minimal isn't my "cup of tea" either.

Posted by bobba lou on Nov-16-2006 07:58:

wow,, all the minimalist in here are making me sick..

Posted by Dj_Es-Dva on Nov-16-2006 08:25:

personally i enjoy it very much as upfront music, altough at times it seems as if people look down on you because your joining the "fad." even after big names stop playing it il def keep listening and playing it, admitedly i prefer variation in my sets and dont play pure minimal sets everything in moderation is good.

can someone define Tech-House for me? because ive always found it difficult to classify as most sites call that minimal...

what would things like:
Mason - Exceeder
Thomas Schumacher - Rotor
Marc Romboy vs Stephan Bodzin - Atlas

come under?
