in the end, Sony is stupid....they know they have a limited supply....and pple are going at lengths to get the unit on day 1.

No matter what, the 400,000 units will sell out in 10 minutes when the stores open.

so if sony was smart, they would be the one jacking the price up for the 1st batch of units....this would limit the number of pple making quick cash and more money would go in Sony's pocket.

The bill of materials for a PS3 is higher than what they are selling it for....they should get that back at least...mind u they will with the coming games and such

All of the above is pure capitalist talk...and IMO makes sense....

That'd suck for those gamers wanting the thing so bad.....and luckily im not one of them!!

(I sense lots of flames coming for this post lol)

The worst thing is, Sony actually cut supply even more on tuesday or wednesday, so it is estimated that North America will only receive 150,000 - 200,000 units! Thats is definitely not acceptable, especially for the Christmas season.

And to top that off, it does not appear that their are going to be any significant Shortages for the Wii. If you want a Wii before Xmas, there is a great chance that you will get one!
The best thing Nintendo could do.

What console do you think Timmy's mom is going to buy? the $700+ system that you can't get...or the $300+ system that will be available! Timmy will be very happy w/ his Wii.

And yeah, the eBay stuff..thats Capitalism working at its best!

thank god I never waited in line

Posted by Jem_hadar on Nov-16-2006 22:38:

If REALLY wished to have one, and I had lots of extra disposable cash, id pay $3,000. Because that would be nothing for something I want.

$3,000 wouldnt wouldnt affect me in any meaningful way.

And that's great if you can afford to, bc then u can get what you want, and you dont have to wait.

People can say what they want about it being ok to make profit from stupid people who are willing to pay well over the retail price for a sold out commodity but it just goes to show what your personal attitude towards money is (probably the same as those scalpers outside the guvernment) and what shit you are willing to put yourself through to make some easy cash.

And theres nothing wrong with scamming people from their hard earned money, there are better and more subtle ways to do it. Get a real fucking job.

well said. people were talking about it all day at school today. stupid if you ask me. losers.

I must add too though...the ppl that are going to pay over two grand, let alone 700 bucks for a fucking video game system is a fucking idiot. not to mention a hundreds of dollars for games and accessories.

read that over a couple times and see if still makes sense to you.
I was going to write a well-written reply, but on second thought - I'll leave you with one word, in hopes it'll help you realize just how terribly wrong and irrelevant this 'supporting statement' is, to
this discussion.

+1

Either Sony is made up of a bunch of fucking morons, or they have some serious trick up their sleeve.

Admit it, how many of you tried getting one online this morning?

ECONOMY

I know what point you're trying to make. The markup of all other merchandise that is being sold at consumer outlets is done at such a way to support the production of further raw materials, the harvesting of such materials, refinery, production of goods, transportation, and all that other crap that you have so nicely summed up as the "economy", that keeps these various fields of exercise functioning.

However, there is a further markup that goes well beyond the costs associated with production. This is, in fact, the only way anyone will ever make a profit, and thus will provide a reason to actually stay in business. This markup varies from industry to industry, and is an inside fact. Its just how it works. Plain and simple. It is this markup that I was refering to. If you're unable to see beyond the bare concept of 'economy' maybe I should have explained that point, so I'm sorry for that. It is fully relevant to this discussion as the underlying idea behind it is the profit gained, through lawful means, from ripping other 'idiots' off, as has been stated so often in this thread, but because one is being done through 'legitimate' retailers, and the other is being done through personal means, somehow you've disassociated the two.

raveed, I'm glad you took the time to reply, and now I understand your position a little better, and I apologise for some of the ruder comments I made.
I can completely agree with most points you have stated regarding business practices, but I think you've applied a concept that really does not apply within this context. Plain and simple, you assume that everyone on ebay is out to build an enterprise, and gather consumer trust and loyalty, which is just not the case. Lets face it, most power sellers on ebay are not individuals that will be reporting to the Better Business Bureau. I see eBay as more of a flea market, where there are millions of single users peddling their goods, and helping others to peddle theirs, by buying.
A few take advantage of the system to set up some kind of legitimate business with few overhead costs, since they don't have to employ as many people, have other websites, have warehouses etc. But for the most part, it is a system where anyone can have access to sell, and buy, junk.

Lisa...I dunno. I just kind of get offended when you call ppl losers and fucking idiots based on their personal preferences. Granted, I drove by a Best Buy with my gf last night, and she stated the same comments and threw the like my way as well
I can agree on the point that maybe its getting far too much attention, too many people are talking about it, and this thread is just such an example. But this is exactly why its getting so much attention, because people are carrying it too far. Look at the comments that are being thrown about simply because a few ppl decided to line up and buy something, or pay a little more to get it. Truthfully, some guy somewhere spending 3000 on a system does not really make a shit of a difference to ANYONE in this world, and has very little to do in the grand scheme of things. Yet everyone sees it upon themselves to ridicule these people...for what purpose?
Ok, the guy postponing his marriage, or taking two weeks off work...excessive definitely....but still....its just a game system, and its just a matter of someone else's personal preference. It stands to be said that most of the people in this community, the things we do, the music we enjoy, and the venues we go to...the vast populace of society can easily say that they regard us as druggies and losers...

Just as they all seem to be misinformed about our 'culture' maybe we're all misinformed about the culture of the video gamer.

buying a system at launch simply does not make sense to me for these reasons

1. the ridiculous price
2. the mediocre games/lack of solid titles
3. in a couple years the price'll drop a couple hundred bucks!

so why not wait til the systems library builds and u have more selection to choose from?

The reason is because people feel the need to have the latest technology. We live in a society where many people feel they need the have the newest stuff first...

Here's one problem from selling them on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/SONY-PLAYSTATIO...1QQcmdZViewItem

There are tons of fake bidders out there ready to ruin your auction!

Posted by Cro_Addict on Nov-17-2006 15:29:

how do ppl get away with those fake bids? wuts the worst that happens ? they get a bad feedback?

Pretty much! It states that a bid is legally binding...

eBay won't do anything. They'll just suspend your account until you pay, but you might be able to take legal action..or something like that.

But it looks like there's nothing much that you can do...

Posted by Cro_Addict on Nov-17-2006 15:33:

haha yeah sue someone for 89 million lol
