| Originally posted by Allied Nations Yeah I figured as much- I try and do these sorts of mixes to get people out of their little house/trance etc shell... I find most people (not even just EDM heads) get very pigeonholed into one specific genre and don't take the time or aren't give then chance to explore different musical styles. Chillout/Downtempo is my personal yang and I find it compliments the thump driven dance music I listen to quite well, especially since most of this is highly related to more common forms of electronic dance music. I can't do the boom boom all day long - I thrive on variety and drawing from all sorts of musical styles/genres. It's a shame this sort of music isn't your cup of tea, hopefully you'll enjoy my next effort a little more .Cheers for the listen! |
was I thinking) because it wasn't trance-ish music. Honestly I'd never listened to this stuff before I heard your mixes, now I love it! I've been searching for every chillout/downtempo/ambient mix I can find on this forum now
fantastic mix greg! this is exactly my non-clubbling sound hehe
. loved it. i've got tons of this stuff...we'll have to swap some stuff sometime hehe
edit: only think i didn't really like was the transition between 13 and 14. both good tracks, but thought it was a bit abrupt. all of the other mixes were very smooth and that one stood out...my guess is you just wanted to use the track heheh

Interesting that you'd mentioned the cold. This is the first time in at least five or six, maybe seven years that we've had snow in the fall (it usually snows in February). Eight inches at my house and I spent the entire day innertubing.
Downloading your mix now and am going to fall asleep to it tonight. I don't mean that in the negative, as I enjoy falling asleep to the Chillout and Downtempo, or any music that's just calm. I'll send a review your way once I have a chance to listen to it wide awake.
any cue for this gem?

This was a great selection! I loved it. Yeah the mixing is rough, but what the fuck else were you supposed to do. The order made sense, and the tracks were good, and often times didnt even need to be mixed, since they just flowed. The whole set reminded me very much of the big bear hug I got when we met briefly.
Warm, open armed music that is inviting and rich.
Reviewing this mix in any kind of "traditional" sense would be ridiculous and not do justice to the work you did here Greg. Mixing schmixing I say, it's all about the programming when it comes to sets like this.
I'm a bit cashed right now (written 20 pages of philosophy in the last 2 days), so pardon me if I'm unable to articulate this review all that well, but rest assured that this mix kept me in good spirits during a time when I couldn't deal with standard issue EDM and just needed something new to chill out to.
I listened to this earlier today following Montana's "Four Phases" (not the new "More phases") dub set and Clovis' mushroom set, and this definitely kept the kind of mellow vibe rolling along. The beginning of the set worked well, but I kind of felt like it took a while to get going, it just kind of rolled along for the first 30 minutes or so. But by the end of the set when that Lemongrass tune kicks in I'm hooked, and when "Last Train" kicks in I was reminded of all the reasons I love that tune.
Well done Greg - Something once again different from you, which I guess I've come to expect as the norm, but you tackle it well!

let me just tell you... i'm a FANATIC for Nina Simone. it would only be in one of your sets, on an trance forum, where Tiesto and Dyk rein, that somehow, some way, upon least expectance, I hear her sampled vocals. really, i don't know what else to say. you never fail me.

Don't feel crushed, if anything you should appreciate the fact I enjoy the vocals without even realizing they belonged to a legend. The guitar line on that tune is boss too. Very nice! i'll be honest, i've never been more enthused in regards to all this new sprung diversity in this forum, suddenly sprouting about.. everywhere. what is goin on? are we steadily inching closer to Discogs mix forums? |
Any other comments about the overall mix? I value your feedback immensely!

Well I have given it one listen so far, and to be honest, I just was not able to get into it... Maybe it was my state of mind at the time.. I had just finished playing Battlefield 2142 and was pretty pissed of with some players, so needed some dark psy to let loose my aggression... I will give this another try when I am in a more mellow state of mind..
well greg, this is a good mix. the track selection is fucking spot on, great mix of mature pop music, quirky electronic music, downtempo beats & guitar poprock. I know how it is to arrange a mix like this and you fucking nailed it in terms of that, it sounded exactly how I'd like every want (normal) radio to sound when i tune into it. The general feel is not that much mellow but it has touches of it.
But here comes the thing that irritated me heavily at times. some of the transitions are WAY TO BLUNT, especially out of the Skye, that transition need a solid second before you brought in Nach Scratch. There was two or three other mixes also that was almost as blunt as that one but it wasn't that much of a biggie. Since you arranged this mix, there is no excuse to get into the milliseconds to do timing in term of arrangements, because that, my friend is what could make this one a stellar set.
But like i said, i still think this is a great mix, and this will have a permanent home on mi mp3player for a while

i'm most definitely diggin it. having trouble sleeping now and thought i'd give it a listen...it's relaxing. didn't really dig that latin song...kinda out of left field, but definitely a nice chill set to end my night with before bed
thanks for sharing!
and i see what montana is saying about the transitions, but i'm more about track selection than mixing. even though i've spent some time behind the decks and can appreciate good mixing, it's just not the most important factor to me and i'm not really an elitest about it. if i like the tracks, i could give 2 shits about the transitions. that's just me though.
