I think it's toast. Then again, I haven't had a chance to get my hands on it. Linux (Knoppix 5.0.1) won't see it, that's a no-go. SpinRite (which apparently also works miracles) can't even deal with it. I had forgotten about the tools on Hiren's boot disc though, I'll let her dad know.

First thing I asked: "Is it a Maxtor drive?" I wasn't surprised to learn that it was.

The wierdest part is that when set as slave in another computer, upon trying to access it it keeps seeking and seeking and seeking and locks up Windows pretty quickly. I'm not sure what to make of that.

pfft...dont blame it on maxtor. ive had my 80gb for 3 years and a 160 for over 2. *knock on wood*

either that, or im lucky

Lisa, I'm so sorry to hear about your computer. I will be of no help, as I know fuck all about how to fix a hard drive, so this is a sympathy post.

I would be devastated if my computer crashed, so I feel for you. The pictures would be the most important things that I would be most upset about losing. Pictures are worth a million words.

My condolences Lisa. From everything I've heard, it sounds like you may have to send it in for a data recovery service. Here's one.

The good news is that these services will inspect your drive for free and won't charge you unless they can pull the data out and you authorize it.

haha...I would get other people to look at my hard drive, its just that I don't want anyone looking at it except for me. I don't even know what kind of illegal stuff I have on there. If it falls into the wrong hands it could cause me some trouble. Especially since I have some pretty important documents on there.

Oh, and i want all my pron back as well!

Del, I'm gonna make the CD tonight and I'll let you know if I make any progress. Cale was telling me that he's heard of that before and he totally forgot to mention it to me.

Thanks again everyone!! I've come to terms with the fact that I'm gonna have to redo my projects...but if I can save all my pictures and other data, I'm gonna try every thing I can! Even if it takes weeks.

I had an External WD that failed on me...

i dont know if anyone suggested this, but i highly recommend you get an external USB hardrive i got myself a 320GB one from Futureshop recently, before getting a new laptop, and has backed every single file I had on my old one

i believe this will last me a life time!

Cale downlaod that CD and ran it this weekend...he was able to recover my data!!

Unfortunatly it's too late for my projects. I still had to re-do the work I had done. But at least now I have copies of the projects I had done previously (always good to have copies). Not to mention all my pictures...thank god! That was gonna be a chore and a half trying to get back some of those (with a few I would have lost forever).

Yeah..i've learned from past experiences to keep everything backed up.

And there's no reason not to these days with so many programs and stuff to help backup your stuff for you.

i have 5 external hard drives..... one of them died last year (i used to switch on twice a month just like you!) making me cry like a little girl. i now backup even my external hard drives!

Stopping and starting a drive puts more strain on the HD than leaving it on....

I had my computer on for like 40 days last summer, then shut it off before going on vacation...i come back, turn it on and 1 HD, dead, capout ...

Tried everything i could...no luck. At least it was under warranty.

The sad part...over 300movies, tv shows and my porn stash...all gone

hmmmm im pretty sure a USB HD is not supposed to be on all the time, not only it heats up, it's pointless to have it plugged in when im not using it

im sure they've taken that into an account when making them

They're no different from a regular harddrive, they're just in a box that lets you plug them in via USB/Firewire/eSATA.

They will break just like a regular one will.

Sorry to jump in here randomly, but is it making clicking noises? ]

You miight try putting it in a ziplock bag and then put it in the freezer for 10 minutes or so, and then trying it back in the PC.

This usually works if it is a mechanical related error only, and can give you just enough life to get data off. You might laugh at the suggestion, but it works in those situations.
