raw milk is sold around the world without incident. Yet in good ole ontario we have our nanny government yet again protecting us from "harm".

I'm all for raw milk because I was raised on it..we ran a small farm back in Poland. It was completely normal to drink milk in this form and no one ever got sick from it. The thing I miss the most is having access to such natural and organic food products..
I think there are things out there that pose much worse health risks.. plus farmers should be given a break, they have it hard enought as it is.

Ad hoc farmers selling raw milk, I do have a problem with.

Having a governing body over the farmers that make raw milk, I'm all for it. This farmer may have experience making and distributing it. Others may not.

As a consumer, I want to be assured I am eating a safe product, and not bovine moonshine. I've had Mozzarela in Buenos Aires that was made from unpasteurized milk, and it was the best mozzarela I've ever tasted, and had some wikkid natural Brie in Perpignan, France. But these countries and regions do have governing bodies in place to ensure that the farmers who distribute the sensitive white ambrosia is delivered safely to all consumer channels.

as for the topic of the thread... this drives me nuts... and im glad someone mentioned mozzarella(sp?)... the cheese that's sold here in ontario that shares that name... looks feels and tastes like plastic... only after being melted onto pizza is it acceptable...

it's not an argument against drinking milk, it's food (pardon the pun) for thought for people who feel we should drink milk or that people who don't drink it are crazy. regardless, the two points are also true (are they not?).

as for "soy milk"...come on, it's just a term. I'll use "soy beverage" from now on, since that's what's on my carton. I'll also be sure to correct those bastards at Starbucks too, lol.

The term is obviously meant to imply that it's a subsitute for real milk...in appearance, taste (um, kind of), use, nutritional value, etc.

I guess we should rename peanut butter...since it's not really butter at all, right? Peanut "spread", perhaps?

Cow milk is designed to accomodate a growing calf, the same as mother's milk is designed to promote healthy growing in the infancy stage of a child.

I don't think the consumption of meat has anything to do with promotion of good health through untainted milk, that is 2 different discussions.
The fact that we are omnivores is great, but see what happens when you start feeding meat protein to cattle. Anyone remember mad cow?

You cannot disput the fact that we are the only mammals that consume milk after infancy. It just doesn't sit well with me. And I consume alot of dairy products. It just makes me think, why, because we've been told to do this.

yeah, that was also me. Cheese should never be bought as bars. The Kraft/CrackerBarrel(didn't mean to insult white people)/noname/etc. $6.99/600g cheese bar mozarella is not real mozarella. For me, only real Italian Mozarella will do, bought in a semi-twisted 8-ball hanging from a string in an Italian deli. Silani in grocery stores if I'm desparate.

the fact that we are being 'told' is a half truth... humans have been eating and drinking milk for a long time before our government 'told' us to...

as far as humans go we have a lot of unique behavioural traits... this does not make them all unnatural or bad...

as a matter of fact... i think if other animals had the ability to drink milk as easily and readily as we can.... that they'd be all about it... actually i know it... ive seen cats and dogs do it...

Agreed.
You can go just about anywhere in the States and buy it, so obviously this is possible.

I'm just not into the whole 'old boys club' mentality in, 'Protecting our interests'.
It's fine to have a governing body and all for making sure the customers are getting safe food, but forcing out legitimate alternatives with lame excuses (especially when most of the world has ready access to it) smacks of a well greased-palm clique.
