You do not gain anything from a 5.1 system when listening to 99.99% of music, as virtually none of it was recorded in more than 2 channels. The center channel and surround channels will just be sending out copies of the right and left channels or a mix of the two.
Most newer video games have support for surround channels on some level, and watching many DVDs you would get a benefit, but if it is solely for listening to music your money is better spent on a higher quality pair of speakers (with or without a subwoofer).
You will almost never get "great" sound out of any PC speakers at high volume with a consumer grade sound card, as the quality of the components along the line is not really designed for "hi-fi" use, there is a lot of quality lost along the line. PC speaker systems tend to be underpowered for use at high volumes, which invariably leads to distortion.
Most of the well known "home" loudspeaker companies produce good quality PC lines of equipment. Klipsch, H-K, and JBL all have products that would probably fit your needs just fine.

Logitechs pound, no doubt. Very powerful. Clear sound in terms of distortion. I found them to be very low-end heavy though, and somewhat lacking in the mid-range.

Freaks for audio quality add a zero behind the pricetag of the logitechs you like 
I'm bit of a freak but my stuff is way off budget and it's not even plugged into the pc.

I'm also in the running for a solid set of speakers for use of music only.
with a budget of $150-$200 to put down, and as far as a Boston/Logitech/Klipsch is concerned- what do you all recommend?
(and is it even going to cost me that much or more?)
last speakers I had were THX, 4.1 surround sound....but i blew all the speakers and subwoofer on one co-ray-zee night of tequila
