The story is good... but not THAT good.
The writing styles are really interesting, though.

Interesting enough i like how Halo's Universe is partly based on the Bible. Think about that for a second. |
Oh here we go....
"thinks about it for 10 mins"
I DON'T GET IT, why because I haven't bothered to play halo since I was on my counterstrike binge. I played it here and there, but felt leaving the group of 4 dudes to play on my own full screen game with a mouse and keyboard =)
Maybe I should go into the foreshadowing of counterstrike in the advent of 9/11 and how the terrorist are portrayed as bad people in the real world yet have all the dominant weapons and vantage points in the game. You know to go along with your biblical reference and mind-washing theorems...it's a damned video game you freak!
and yet again - ANOTHER REFERENCE - to the if you don't agree with the mass appeal you're considered to not know anything and are full of shit. im sure you seen this witty motto before - you laugh at me because im different, i laugh at you because you're all the same --think about that for 7.89seconds

the whole PC vs console thing wont die, but as far as i know, Goldeneye was the first game to involve a detailed single player and combat-hit-physics/goal system on a console with a reasonably complex multiplayer gaming before games like half-life hit pcs. (tho just barely) and the comparison isnt totally proper.
as far as quality gaming for single and multi, goldeneye and perfect dark beat the shit out of halos.
halo single is boring as piss and generic (textures, level design, creatures, et al) multi is slow and is only good for entertaining your slow friends whilst everyone is fucked up. not to mention hackers, cheaters the rest online.
farcry on the xbox was much closer to a richer, all around gaming experience(goldeneye) than halo. MS and fanboys just desperately want to be different|

you kill me bro (an anagram for rob, whoa)
one reason why halo is so great is because the multiplayer system is well set-up. it's easy to jump into a game. plus, with the ranking system, many players can dick-size their halo playing ability. it also has new map downloads, gametypes, and other updates (which is common with pc titles, but not as common with consoles if i'm not mistaken).
it's also cool to see all of the stats of a good multiplayer match. hit accuracy, bullets fired, kills, deaths, suicides.. and with the badges it makes it even more interesting. people get a warm feeling after having three consecutive triple kills. i dunno why.
furthermore, the weapons are fairly well balanced. each weapon has it's own advantage and disadvantage, and because of that, it adds a lot of strategy depending on the map, gametype, teams, etc. and there's also little tricks such as crouching while jumping to jump slightly higher that makes the game a little more interesting.
finally the reason why i like halo the most is because of how "precise" and slow-moving (in a good way) it is. i like having to actually aim, unlike other fps' like unreal tournament where it's so fast paced you just kinda point in the general direction and hold the fire button. that's just personal preference though.
story and single player mode? meh. the most fun is the multiplayer. split-screen co-op is a ton of fun though.

im sorry, but that statement is just silly
as for goldeneye, i never said it wasnt a good game. just that its not credible to call it the best FPS EVER. theres a whole lot of stiff competition. its a big fucking call

in the same way that unreal freaks say "halo is too slow" i must think that unreal is too fast. just personal preference i think.
goldeneye is a classic, and imo a very influential fps for its time. a lot of people i know have *heard* of doom at least, but EVERYONE has *played* goldeneye. most people i knew didn't get computers until after the whole doom thing. meh.
Posted by biznology on Dec-11-2006 06:39:
i never argued that goldeneye was the best.
just that many dynamics in gameplay and game design in GE are now standard everywhere else

You're kidding right....regarding the terrorists in cs, I assume that's what you said the above in reference to. All the dominant weapons??? Have you actually played this game?

In some ways, I would tend to agree with you here. At the time of Halo, there really was just nothing else to be played on the Xbox.

in turn the PS2 dropped with it's staple Ridge Racer...
can we make the comparison of Halo w/ xbox and Resistence w/ PS3 even though there is a huge leap in gameplay technology, in the terms of mass appeal to 'model' how halo converted a following?

Umm... Halo was an X-Box launch title. It was there from the beginning.
Anyways, I'm pretty much an FPS veteran. I started with Wolf 3D, I was about 7 years old at the time. Shortly after that was the original Doom, which I fondly remember playing in the dark at 8 years old and getting the crap scared out of me (in a fun way though). I got Doom 2 for Christmas after that and I was one happy kid. After that I played Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Rise of the Triad, Hexen... and I feel like I'm forgetting some others, but alas it was a long time ago. Anyways, after that came Quake 2. I got a Monster 3D for my Birthday to go in my Pentium so that I could run OpenGL in Quake 2 right when it was still cutting edge. Good times. Q2 and AQ2 became the first FPS games that I played online seriously. After Q2 was Half-Life. I've played that game inside and out, just about every mod you can imagine. It was here that I started to get heavily into online play. I've since played in top-level TFC, CS, Day of Defeat, Natural Selection, Quake 3, and Quake 3 Fortress clans. I've since moved on from the clan scene, but I still play just about every FPS I can get my hands on.
So yeah. I've played them all.
I enjoyed Halo. My first time playing it was on the PC (which was a pretty shoddy port, by the way, but fun nonetheless). I greatly enjoyed the fact that you could carry only two weapons at a time. Even in a fantasy Sci-Fi FPS game, I can appreciate the realism of not being able to carry an entire fucking arsenal with you in some magic hat. That was my one major gripe with Half Life, and then later Half Life 2. HL really defined the FPS as a mature genre. The game took place in a world that felt real--health, weapons, and ammunition weren't found lying around in secret rooms as if some magical fairy had left them there for you. They were found in logical places. The environments weren't a series of maze-like arenas with set entrances and exits, for which you had to find colored keys to advance from. And yet, you could somehow manage to carry a crowbar, two pistols, a shotgun, an mp5, a crossbow, an RPG, a gauss gun, a gluon gun, an alien bee launcher, a variety of grenades and mines, as well as a small litter of cute but vicious little alien creatures called snarks. I understand the enjoyment of a variety of weapons, but still, it's kind of hard to believe sometimes. So, Halo's weapon system was an enjoyable breath of fresh air for me.
I also liked how you could bash anyone in the face with whatever weapon you were holding at that moment.
I also enjoyed the huge, open air environments, and the seamless transitions into various vehicles.
I also enjoyed the relatively slower pace of your movements. Firefights were more about cover and strategy, rather than running in, guns blazing. Floating jumps are still really fucking weird, though. I guess you could argue that the ring has a lower gravity, but whatever, I'm not that picky.
I enjoyed the teamwork with NPC characters. Fighting off an assault with a few NPC marines, then loading into a jeep and running down some elites was an enjoyable experience.
I enjoyed Halo 2 as well, for all the same reasons pretty much
The storyline is mediocre, and the game is by no means perfect, but I think it's one of the more enjoyable FPS games that I've played in my time.

You have just jumped up to 'super-1337' in my book. Two titles that I dearly loved, growing up.
Didja ever play Heretic or Hexen II?
I never got the chance to.

Heretic was a shocker! Horrid FPS... Rise of the Triad was cool! Loved the double pistols n shit!

I loved that game.
Posted by Omega_Blue on Dec-12-2006 08:38:
yeah, dark forces was good. the sequel was even better. i loved using all of those force powers, and i think it was the first star wars FPS to use the light sabers. dunno for sure though.
Rise of the triad is one of my favorite FPS of all time. gotta love shroom mode and the drunk missiles.
Posted by CONNERMAN2000 on Dec-12-2006 09:30:
i played the hell out of dark forces back in the day. then lucasarts ported it to the psone, where i continued my addiction.
Hexen was the shit. i have it for N64. I believe it is the FIRST console FPS to ever feature 4 player co-op (and still one of the few)

Granted levels like assault and a few others definitely favour terrorists. However, problem is if you plan regular internet games versus playing with a team. A good team can rush from all angles, and negate the location advantage that terrorists have in maps like these.
Generally speaking, the CTs have more accurate guns, and in cs, more accurate=better.

rise of the triad - CLASSIC
dual pistols was the shit

Very true. However, the problem is, these systems are never released at the same time. At the time Halo came out, the PS2 had plenty of other games on offer.
