lol

love the economic angle on it.

Exactly. There's too much money to be made off of people being fat. Convincing people to eat healthier is like convincing them to wake up and realize that their government is a fucking sham and lies to them and spends their money to kill children thousands of miles away - quite doubtful everyone is going to listen, or even the majority is going to listen for that matter.

It would seem as though the sole responsibility for reversing this trend lies within the companies who sell the majority of fast food. Perhaps if McDonald's bought out 24 Hour Fitness centres, we would see some progress.

the problem I have is that I want to be obese, but I can't. I follow all of your guy's advice, I eat mcdonalds all the time, I never exercise, and just in general eat a lot of high fat foods (not to mention I do live in america!!) and I cannot for the life of me get obese.

any suggestions?

bonus 10 cool points to anyone that gets my point.

IMO the problem is TV.

Capitalism does a lot of good things, but it really does seem to be part of the problem here: Sell people cheap crap food, they get fatter, they eat more, doctors and surgeons make more money, pharma profits go through the roof -- everybody wins -- economically, at least.

The bad outweighs the good.

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Dec-18-2006 20:55:

I'm not sure how one would measure that. Regardless, capitalism is the result (for now) of a relatively high degree of economic freedom, although some areas do need regulation to avoid systemic inefficiencies (like America's terrible insurance system).

Though it's a fact that healthier people simply look better, you do not necessarily have to be healthy to be considered "good-looking", and I think that this particular trend is likely to gradually change as more and more people become, well, larger. I mean, beauty is only skin-deep, right? Right.

Next up: "Will she still love me even though I'm fat? Do I *need* to lose weight in order to be more attractive, or can she accept me for who I am?"
"I am in shape. Round is a shape."

Although I'm thinking this is the point you were getting at.

I think that the trend will continue until people must really, truly survive in every sense of the word once more. When will that happen? No idea.

Indeed. It's easy to say "Just do it" (no I don't work for Nike), but it's not that easy to actually go ahead with it. Everybody has their own habits and addictions, and it can be hard to break.
Thing is, it takes work for those that have to change their lifestyle in order to get healthier. Most peoples' lifestyles have been so accustomed to not realizing that it does, in fact, take quite a bit of effort to break one's everyday cycle.

... I'm really bad at expressing my thoughts.

My polisci teacher mentioned that American kids consume 8 times as much food as third world children.

The problem is distribution. Morally, I do not believe that food should be sold to the highest bidder. Who is to say that someone who is more financially providential DESERVES to live a healthier life than someone who is not.

That being said, America is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, therefore purchases more food than most countries. An average American kid gets home from school, walks into his kitchen and opens the cabinets, to find COUNTLESS things to eat. I'm not saying that this kid shouldn't be able to have a large array of food to choose from...but as the choices multiply, obviously they will choose the product that is the easiest to make...given the overall lack of motivation in this country.

laziness + wealth = obesity. simple as that.

Ban Fast Food America.

They should stop making food so fucking delicious, and addictive.

It's not the taste of the food - it's the MSG.

I thought I was safe adopting the same premise those anti-smoking people have.

MSG does have a taste: umami.

the problem with obesity tends to affect the lower-class moreso than the upper class. people with money can afford to eat good (aka healthy), whereas poor people are forced to eat cheap junk food and fast food which causes more obesity and health problems.

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Dec-18-2006 22:00:

Even the poor of "industrialized" countries are a lot wealthier than the poor of "developing" ones. And in some countries, being fat is actually considered a sign of prosperity, so people would take it as a goal rather than something to be avoided.

not necessarily. it can be expensive to eat healthy, but you don't NEED money to eat properly. in the case of lower class people, the problem may be lack of education and not caring about their appearances. but there are also a large percentage of upperclass people that are nice and plump because they can afford the extravegant lifestyle and work less.

Posted by EXTREMUM on Dec-18-2006 22:23:

It's not about the money - it's about personal preference. Are you athletic, or a couchpotato? Do you watch what you eat, or do you eat carelessly, upon impulse?

Answer to Obesity: SELF-CONTROL.

My post on PD/D on poor nutrition in the western world

Basically, lot of people eat a lot of sugar they dont know about.
Sugar, doesnt get burnt off so it gets converted to lipids and people turn into blimps even though they 'think' theyre eating something which is good for them.

Same here. I know tons of fast bastards in the Hamptons, whom have their bodies pressed against the steering wheels, of their sports cars.
