Oh dear oh dear...
Emo is a product of the Under-20's from 90's USA that stumbled into the world, full of confusion, anger, ignorance and no identity, nicking their styles from gothic, heavy metal and rivethead scenes, throwing it all together like a hobo's vomit and arriving on the scene like a fart in an elevator.
Socially repulsive, offensive to most anyone still breathing and obnoxiously cloying.
So at some point these wankers managed to get themselves labelled by the press after a few public homicides, suicides, assaults and other socially repulsive activity. Journalists who remembered enough of their wine soaked degree at university. Probably thought of arts students there through the booze soaked haze, wearing black and decided this 90's generation of disfunctional spastics cutting themselves was decidedly 'gothic' or some kind of angry beatnik or mod in a trenchcoat, full of meth some evil scientist had thawed out from cryogenic storage and cut loose on society.
Course the generally ignorant public everywhere bought that as being 'the whole and wonderful truth' (because the people on the TV told them) and a whole new generation came into the fold looking for some kind of clique to wrap their miserable, angry selves in for the sake of belonging to something, anything, anyone.
No one wanted them
So they formed their own...
Least the goth scene just came from english punk and new wave where all we wanted to do was harmlessly say 'stuff you' to the system, arts and music in a way which was in a sense a dark, sarcastic and bitter piss-take of the 80's pop scene and early 90's corporate conformity and identity.
Needless to say, this didnt make a lot of people in the gothic, heavy metal, hardcore, post-punk and industrial scenes very happy at all with the whole 'guilty by general association thing' with a bunch of teenage, pointless posers with no identity.
And that, is the difference.
Who'd have thought a topic starting with the ICP would turn towards emo kids???
Mind, both do wear black eye-liner...

Thank you, thank you.... I'll be here all night, folks.
Lol i wouldn't be surprised to see a thread on an ICP forum that said " Armin van Buuren - Can someone explain this garbage called music?"
People have different tastes, I'm sure those clowns have some sort of rep to keep up, or else they would've been 1 hit wonders. Their fad has sure caught a lot of my generation though. Now among jocks, geeks, and skaters, they even have juggalo cliques!
The main difference between emos and goths is that the latter make much better music.
