I'm actually amazed that I got through the "raves" of the early 1990s in one piece, with all the illegal/dangerous stuff that went on. Pulling 3 phase electric power from multiple sources and long lengths of hose to get cooling water, for the lasers, sound and lights.
...and quickly throwing equipment into vans and running away, when the police showed up.
...and getting paid.

When I was at AVB a few weeks ago I was having a decent conversation with this guy until he asked the "So when's the last time you been to a rave?" I looked at him like huh?! Who the fuck does to raves or do they even exist anymore. Needless to say that conversation didn't go much further.
Cherry Beach 3 summers ago....
yo ppl need to be posting raves on the boards so we know where there at......
The last 'rave' I remember going to (and details are fuzzy as it is) It was when i was first getting into the scene (I think it was around 94 or 95). It was apparently the last better days rave. It was at the masonic temple on Yonge st.
do I remember who was spinning, no. I just remember thinking that I've stumbled upon something that I really liked. Too bad it was their last production.
The last event I went to that didn't have a purchased venue was one in philadelphia that was held right outside the city in a field by the river... Two different stages playing all sorts of EDM, crazy kids grooving with visors and glowsticks like mad, and free beer. Police choppers occasionally overhead but they didn't seem to think much of it, party went on until about 8 am.

rave scene evolves. it changed from what it was even 4 years ago
my first rave-like event was a Hulla.
id say it had the most "rave" spirit of happy hardcore and candi kids hehe
now edm is commercialized so even the rave kids go after nicer venues (means payed for) and such.
last rave was probably last summer
now im just not into the music that they usually have there

Montreal............the sugar shack.
good party
Nice form man...

| Originally posted by LittlePoonzgirl Ok, I'm really sorry but I have a few comments/corrections 1) In the early years of rave transportation was not by shuttle bus (I think you are actually referring to mid-late 90s). Early raves were more underground. Parties that came later (such as Hullabaloo) were considered commercial raves and different from the 'early years'. 2) The large raves of the mid-late 90s don't exist in Toronto for reasons such as rave laws (and various other reasons). Insurance issues are mostly a side note. For example, Harvest festival is insured and it's on a farm (but not in Toronto). 3) It is true that the large raves of the late 90s no longer exist, however, there are still some parties that are very much like the ones in the early years (early 90s). There is still an underground scene in Toronto (it's just not very big). 4) Clubs like the Guv and Afterhours are NOT raves. While the EDM scene is changing that doesn't mean that an afterhours club is now a rave. The vibe is different, the people are different, and the music is different. While I went to Darkrave just this weekend I consider that more of a mainstream type commercial rave. I think that real (underground) raves have very little rules and don't happen in clubs/legal venues. |
