HAHAHA omfg. i just took a closer look at it.
i got the phone unlocked from a place online.

i know that some wholesalers get their products overseas.
the software cd is chinese version, while one of the feature guides is in russian. (manual and everything else is in english)

but, i just noticed the phone's number buttons.
as per normal it has letters underneath the numbers eg:

2
ABC

but underneath the letters are cyrillic letters

i put some of my job skills to good use. I got my phone unlocked legally from t-mobile over the phone. Social Engineering FTW!

Unless you managed to do it through T Mobile before the minimal contractual obligation timeframe then there's really no big deal in what you did.

Not sure what the limits are with T-Mobile but I assume it's 6 months to a year perhaps more and then they are supposed to give you the unlock codes for free.

The Samsung posted in the thread above is available from T-Mobile (was for free w/ 2-year contract). I wanted to get that, but I botched my proceedings and didn't get it. At least now I'm only paying per month and can cancel at any time.

I found unlock codes for my phone online, but honestly, I don't think it really matters if my phone is unlocked or not.

My sister got her phone unlocked (through T-Mobile). She just called them up and told them that she would be out of the country for an extended period of time (was trying to scale back her contract or something), but they ended up giving her unlock codes so she could use the same phone. Too bad the phone sucks balls and has issues with the battery. Be creative; you can find unlock codes online.

Forgive my ignorance, but what does it mean for a phone to be locked/unlocked?

In the past, certain phones were only available for certain networks. I.E. Cingular had phones that would only work on Cingular's network, and T-Mobile had phones that would only work on T-Mobile's network. In order to get one network's phone to work on the other it had to be 'unlocked'. Now, however, there's a law in place that says phone companies can't do that (I think). So now any phone will/can work on any network. Something like that

Same here. This is the only cellphone I've had, and I've had it for a little over 1.5 years now. It's taken such a beating and still works great. It's such a tank, I love it.
