more likely population control, though on the 'plus' side we get rapid technological progress along with it.

oil wasnt expensive because it had to otherwise exxon wouldnt make as much! it was expenseive for profit!

That's capitalism for you. Corporations are responsible to their shareholders, not to employees or "society" or "the environment" or whatever else, which means responsible to make as much profit as possible. They may appear to respect or care for things other than profits, but that happens because they're required to maintain certain appearances occasionally if they're to remain profitable. In a very real sense, corporations, when considered as persons (which they are under some laws), are psychopathic -- their actions show a sense of prudence (things they shouldn't get caught doing if they want to profit), but no sense of morality (things they shouldn't do no matter whether they get caught or not).

This isn't to say that corporations are all bad. The Western world owes much of its wealth to their activities, or at least the use to which they have put the inventions of individuals. And it definitely isn't to say that all or even most of the individuals who comprise corporations are amoral or evil; they're not.

Socially, ethically, morally, economically, scientifically... Are you happy with where we are?

I'm pleased with the progress I've made, but I will never be content enough in one place to stand still for more than a few moments. As for the rest of you... well I don't see many 'round here.

I'm only happy if Armbiter's happy.
