Aria had 3 or 4 rigs mounted to the ceiling that each had 4 or 6 moving heads on them. in addition to strobes etc... The rigs could also move down up and down. At least that's the way it was the times I went there over the years. the last being July 2005.

sigh what are us professionals to do

After 12 years of going to clubs and raves, and almost 7 years of organizing my own events, including doing visuals with live video mixing and helping with the lights... yer damn straight I'm an expert

I don't know what everthings called or how to operate them all.. but i've rented/used enough equipment to know what everything does, and spent enough time in dark rooms filled with repetative beats to know what works

Give me lasers and smoke and hands-in-the-air trance and I'm happy, but lose the goddamn strobelights everywhere.

I'm surprised it wasn't Argentina.

fly has a decent lighting set up, and from time to time someone who can use it to it's full potential too.

Wow you make my 33 years of doing it sound insignificant

lasers are awesome when used properly (meaning in synch, not just randomly shooting/spinning). Strobes can be too much sometimes. when deep dish came at 10 year, the strobes starting to going crazy near the end of their set. like it was a good 5 min of strobes. everyone lookeed crazy and caught in time and i had to close my eyes. other lighting depends on the venue and what the place is trying to portray. Went to a house party last night and we had a strobe, black light, a laser and a fog machine. crazy jam. here some pics (i think somethings wrong my with my camera though... all my pics ive been taking with it are really grainy)

i knew they weren't just in the floor!

i just remember it always being very dark in there. maybe that's because my eyes were always closed lol.

I agree with nadezhda, they are cheesey, and I do this for a living.

Distracting lights are usually a sign of bad programming, and in a club situation you are limited to a set number of effects/movements or audio input which, In my opinion, is a shameful waste of equipment and electricity. 15 hours of lasers-in-the-face will get tedious, they should be used to set a mood, not give clubgoers flash blindness.

I like to use diffusers and other media, with laser light, to get some very diffferent effects. I don't care for overused "beam effects", "flat fans" and other "stock" movements.

I like to think I do a pretty good job, since I'm still in the business and have been for a VERY long time.

...plus, lasers are REALLY expensive, clubs should concentrate on booking good talent, instead of a huge laser/lighting systems.

a good lighting guy knows the right time to use anything.
and most importantly, he knows exactly the right time to shut it all off.
i like the dark.

Well said! I'm going to borrow that phase, if you don't mind.

I love the lighting at sonic for sure. A couple of times though, they had them on for WAY too long and it just pissed me off. I don't know about other people but when I go to a real afterhours the last thing I want to experience is full on lighting for 3 minutes.

I know clubs tend to emphasize the lighting closer to the morning hours for certain reasons but I find it distracting and annoying when I am in my own vibe and all of a sudden the lights go on and they stay on for way too long.

Especially in sonic. the club is dark. It should stay dark and maintain an underground feel.

The lights are skeeeeeeeetchy and ruin my vibe in sonic.

Don't get me wrong though, I do like them in Guv. I think the only place lights should really be is in that club....AND TRANCE IN THE MAIN ROOM!!!! (wink wink)

Lighting should be known as the art of darkness where even 1 fixture should tell a story
I am not a big fan of ott lighting , I dislike having to do Tiesto type of events with all that light
For me Dark Dirty Tribal with minimalist stabs of light punctuating the darkness is much more fun.

Thats a personal thing though and doing it for a job means I could be doing the lighting for a TV production one day (Example I will be doing the lights for the Motoring TV series for thier car of the year episode) a fashion show or concert the next to a club event etc etc.
You do a job , you get paid thats it

agreed on strob lighting being awful. I can't stand it under any circumstances in a club. Maybe we can find a politician to ban it

Lasers...I don't care one way or the other. Fitting at Guv, lame in smaller spaces. It's akin to putting a dynacord in a 600 sq. ft. lounge, lol.

Lighting is an important factor though and I respect clubs that put as much thought into their lighting systems as they do into their sound and decor.

IMHO, less is more though...darker, non-busy lighting is my preference. Sonic does it well...as does Footwork.
