There is a ringtone I want ... a friend of friend had it.
When the phone rings, it's a talking ringtone with a chick that says "Phone call for David, phone called for David!" He got it from a site, but I never found it ... apearntly, the site has every common name for that ringtone.

I keep both.. For calls it's Vibrate (three times) and for SMS / PIN / ETC. It's Vibrate (two times) plus a notifier ring. That's only when it's holstered, otherwise it knows to just ring.
PS That notifier ring is from the Windows Vista Sound Theme.. You know you're a fcukin' g33k when!
It depends on the situation i'm in.
Work - low ring
Loud Party/Function - ring & vibrate.
Car/Home - high ring
Meeting - vibrate
So......my answer would be both!
vibrate... ring just calls for attention

Everytime it I put it on ring, I would get annoyed, regardless who's calling and what custome ringtone I made. Here's the poll, pls vote. EDIT: And no I didn't put an option where you can vote for Ring & Vibrate, I found that very odd that ppl do that LOL |

Vibe. Almost exclusively.
Subtlety is key.

My phone is set to vibrate AND ring
my vibrate is pretty loud, so I don't think it makes much difference in terms of annoyance to other people, but if I have my phone on vibrate and especially if it is in my pocket or something, it scares the crap out of me every time it starts ringing. maybe I'm just a spaz, but for some reason it surprises me.
so I keep it on ring

i've switched to vibrate a long time ago or even silent especially when i'm sleeping. i can't stand the ring. makes me nervous. besides i don't always like to be 'on call' or available at any given time of the day or nite. i don't really use my phone for long(-er) conversations, just for people to leave messages or for texting. saves me a lot of $$$.
i usually have it on vibrate since im class most of the time and then i just forget to turn the ring back on. and since i listen to my music with headphones on all the time, i tend not to hear my ring. i sometimes cant even feel the vibrate
