Compared to other AWD systems, X-Drive is nothing to speak highly of. The 2 very best (apparently) are Subaru's symmetrical AWD system (obviously), and Nissan's ATTESSA.

{edit} Seems as though BMW has recently revamped X-Drive and now it actually doesn't suck.
