I was raised on the, "Good behavior gets rewarded, bad behavior gets punished," systems. Every time I did something good I was rewarded in some way, shape or form. Every time I was bad, I was denied something I was looking forward to.

Grooviebeats:

It doesn't have to be just taking away their favorite play toy. Say you're at the grocery store, and you promised your child a toy today. If they misbehave and don't listen to you, then don't buy them the toy. If you promised to take them to a movie but they act up, don't take them to the movie.

It's not just about taking away toys, it's denying them something they love, in general.

Edit: Okay, this is it, I really need to get back to my test.

IMO, and what I and my friends have been though with parents, getting yelled at or talked to aggressively, works better than hitting your kids.

answer me this: When your kid acts out, you'll spank them....what appends when they don't take it seriously and turn around and do what they did the first time? Spank them again? You'll only end up spanking and spanking them which is how some parents start abusing their kids. ( I doubt you'll ever do that, I'm just saying as an example and what I've heard happened to kids before.

No i would never abuse my child.. but i would spakn them again if they kept acting up. Spanking worked for me.. heck on time.. we (mom and I) were at a food store.. cart slap full me pushing it. I get the wild idea i was gonna run and jump put my feet in the bar in the back and well skat across the floor. Well i jumped and flipped the cart. My mom had to pay for all the broken stuff and buy all new stuff that wasnt all messed up..I got my ass tore the fuck up in the middle of the store.. but did i do it again.. hell no...

beleive me i see you point but i was also raised on if you are good you got things but i was raised that if you were bad you got ya ass beat.

I don't believe that you should place your hands on a child in any form of punishment at all. I find it wrong, harsh and it could potentially screw up or scar your kid for life. I don't know why parents just can't talk to their kids, and have the kid listen and do right. It's not the parents fault nor the kid, but I just think that with time your kid will listen, without physical action taken.

Hey, guess what...

...that's right - NOT IN FLORIDA...

Only in the Wild Wild West...

Posted by RandomGirl on Jan-23-2007 00:31:

When I was a kid, I was spanked, and a few times was given the belt!

Coming from someone who experienced this kind of punishment, I will firmly say that I do not think it is effective.

Why?

Well, it made me *fear* my mother, which lodged a wedge between her and I. I cannot say for sure if this is true, but my mother and I don't have a wonderful relationship now, and I wonder if perhaps she didn't choose to use physical punishment, if that would be a little different?

It also made me lose respect for her. She would spank me, and I would be angry and resentful. When I got older I started to look down on her for not being able to rationally discuss the issue with me.

One time when I was 14-15, my mother slapped my leg really hard for something, I looked at her and I said with the fiercest resolve "if you EVER hit me again, I will not think twice about hitting you back". She never touched me again.

I mean, don't get me wrong... I wasn't beaten or anything. I was spanked or whatever when I did something my mom deemed as wrong. However, I don't think it EVER taught me a lesson. Instead, I would leave the experience pissed off, angry, upset, resentful, but NEVER did I consider my wrong doing and put together the fact that what I did wrong warranted my whack. Looking back, I only remember the reason of why I got the belt ONCE, and I can assure you it did NOT NOT NOT teach me a lesson. In fact, it made me realize how corrupt and evil adults are.

The ONLY time I would ever say physical punishment would be warranted is if the child used it first. For example, my kid pulls another kids hair and makes that kid cry. I would pull my kids hair and ask him how he liked it. Obviously he wouldn't, and I would then explain that if he didn't like it, then he shouldn't do it to other people either.

Having my mom sit me down, talk to me, and use the words, "I'm very disappointed in you," always hit me a lot harder than a spanking could, in my opinion.

Yea, that method probably works better in most cases, but to make it illegal to do anything else than this is absurd.

Oh, I'm not saying that they should make it illegal. While I don't necessarily agree with spanking, I think it's a waste of time to outlaw it.

Posted by Frenchie on Jan-23-2007 00:43:

My friend who is sitting beside me said that he got spanked as a kid, and it made him act out more because he was raging out against what was done to him. When his brother was born, they did the opposite and just talked to him when he did wrong, and he never never acted out against it.

Making spanking illegal isn't a bad thing**, the act of spanking is what is bad.

**It's juss a little too extreme.

Mm-hmm. Kind of a "violence promotes violence" sort of thing.

Edit 2: Wait... it's not on page one.

Let's see the things I've been spanked for during my childhood:

  1. For being heretic: I'm agnostic now;
  2. For not knowing rare verb tenses in Portuguese: I completely forgot how to use those words, and I'm strictly against their use;
  3. For breaking a mirror: My parents were afraid that I would get hurt with the pieces of glass. Ironically, spanking hurt me a lot more ;
  4. For being disorganised: I'm incredibly disorganised with my time and my room is a constant mess. My posts, essays and pretty much any written work are the exception

    ...

  5. Other reasons: Results were the opposite of what was planned.

As far as I know, being spanked had a similar effect on pretty much everyone else I know.

You guys fail to consider one obvious point and that is that this law will not work because there is no way of regulating or enforcing it. Are you going to have cops at every home? I didn't think so.

Will parents take their spanked kids to a doctor? Nah, that won't happen either

Unless, of course, someone sees a parent do it publicly. I think the law is just a complete waste of time. I'd rather see a government set a plan to encourage alternatives to spanking and focus more time on making laws that actually make sense.

Now, I return to homework.

You're very right, but...

1-Parents slip
2-Kids talk
3-People can catch this happening.

This is not really a good way of tackling this problem, specially regarding (2): A few years ago, a child here in Brazil said he was sexually abused by his teachers. Hell broke loose, the press crucified the so-called aggressors and, some weeks later, they found out the kid had fantasised about the whole thing.

But, by then, the nursery school had already been closed, and they couldn't just get any of the kids back.
